Without getting into the detail, I support this. I'm pretty much against anything that detracts from me creating my char. Be it PC voice-overs or mandatory backstories.
There is a difference between online gaming and mmorpg's. I know that the definition has been greatly watered down over time, but to me an MMORPG is still an opportunity to create a char in a world.
I fully support your concerns about backstories, but because of the unique feature of personal stories, I understand the necessity of having to choose between a list of backstories, because they determine the adventures that you will encounter.
However, as I said before, I hope that you can choose a voice for your character, and I hope that its from a large list of choices. Otherwise, I'd like the option to turn it off.
"Everyone dies. It is how one lives that matters." Artemis Entreri (R.A. Salvatore)
"P.S. MAKE NO DEALS WITH THE WOLF." -Durzo Blint-
"But, there is one they fear.
In their tongue, he is Dovahkiin -- Dragonborn!" -Game of the Century-
It's a matter of personal taste. I can't stand voice overs and even cinematics (unless they're 5 sec flashy transitions type of thing). However, the devs said quite clearly you'll be able to turn off the in-game VOs... as for cinematics, dunno. I suppose you'll be able to vary levels of music/environment/voices.. but even then I couldn't care less because I skip cinematics habitually.
For me the only visuals worth seeing in game are those driven by me or other players and the only voices I care to hear are those on vent.
omg yes! that was so annoying in the first game. i had my characters voice pictured in my head, and then it was completely different when he spoke. being able to turn it off would be a great feature.
Right! I just can't stand when a game gets in the way of my imagination. I really hope there will be a text-only mode so that I can imagine everything the way I want to.
If the script is good and there is some variation, then the actual voices I can get used to after an initial clashing 5-10mins or so, so no big deal if that's the case.

Thanks Dawngreeter, that is by far the wittiest response I have had the pleasure of reading in a long time. I am going to laughing all day long as I think of this thread .

I bet they're going to have different voices you can choose from for character customization.
