Originally posted by twrule Treasure (they used to make platformer games: Gunstar Heroes, Mischief Makers, Dynamite Headdy) - the mmo would probably be 2D but the epicness would more than make up for it. Tri-ace (Star Ocean Series) - say what you want about Star Ocean 3 and 4, but 2 was awesome and had elements that would make for a very deep and engaging mmo experience. Capcom - Actually they already made a monster hunter mmo I guess? But more would be good. Ubisoft - Plenty of nice IPs that would convert well into mmos, and whatever they went with I'm sure it'd be quality. Sonic Team - C'mon, you know you're curious how it'd turn out.
treasure would make a cool 2d online game. sonic team made pso. not technically mmo but its a great game.
Firaxis for a Civilization Online. Full sandbox. Dunno how that would play, though...
Nintendo for a Mario-whatever online pure themepark (lobby MMOG) mixing various genres from platform to karting passing by combat and puzzle-solving. That could kill WoW in rough subs, mark my words.
We've seen over the past few years as all kinds of companies, new and old, tried to jump into the MMO market. We've seen the crap they've released and how quickly some of them have(and will) die off.
MMOs are a much different gaming experience then other games. So when a company applies the style they used to make other games it usually doesn't work out.
If anything I'd be more willing to see upstart companies who are focused on only MMOs, making MMOs. But even many of those have not worked out well in the past couple years because they over-reached their budgets with their ideas.
Most of the big game companies are already in MMOs, there are already too many MMOs out there. I would like to see the companies trimmed down a bit to the solid ones for a few years to get this genre back to when everything released was solid and fun.
Bioware would be one of my choices and I am looking forward to SW:TOR but I would have loved for them to tackle a fantasy RPG (Dragon Age MMO) or something.
Rockstar- but only if they were producing RED DEAD online.
Bethesda- They are already good at open world style games. Would love to see Oblivion online or Fallout MMO.

Can you mention some gaming company's that didn't make MMORPG's but where into making singleplayer games and moved into MMORPG and failed?

As stated mind of giving some example's? prefered released games or perhaps failed games?

I believe that gamecompany's that focus purely on making MMORPG only create a kind of tunnel vision for them selfs.

Sorry I aint seeing many big game company's, atleast if we look at western made MMORPG's, I do see some take-overs of smaller gamecompany's going into one gamecompany for example like EA. I think the majority of "MMO's" are not western made MMO's. But I could be wrong obviously which we can discuss here.
On a side-note I agree with those who mentioned Valve, from the games I played from them their NPC's AI's are really great especially in Half-Life.
Valve is one of the most creative companies in the gaming industry, I would love to see what they would do. Obviously they would make a pretty good MMOFPS, but id like to see what they would do with an MMORPG.

Have you ever tried Tales Runner (from gPotato) ? Exchange all Characters to Sonic characters and add some nicer graphics, and BOOM, there you got a Sonic MMORPG
I have thought about this before and I'm glad I'm not the only nutter who came up with the Rockstar North, I've loved their games ever since they were DMA Design Ltd, by playing Lemmings (SNES), Body Harvest & Space Station Silicon Valley (N64) and GTA3 & Vice City (PC) Thats why I would love to see what they can came up with, they make fun inventive games, so I see no reason not to think they would make a blinding MMO. Bethesda is a great choice but not really relevant as its said around here (I know I'm mad for believing what I read on here) they are making one already. Another one for me would be Crytek as they are capable of making open non linear worlds with probably the baddest graphics engine of them all.
EDIT: Also I think Creative Assembly could make a great MMORTS/RPG historical game thats spanned many decades incorporating the whole of the worlds history, though a big ask I feel they could pull it off.

Going to have to agree with those who said Bethesda and Valve, but especially Valve. Bethesda seems to have "lost it" in my opinion, while Valve has been releasing some pretty amazing titles. Would love to see a Zombie Survival MMO (Not Undead Lab's version for Console), has some great potential in my opinion.
I noticed several mentioning Valve. I'm wondering, why on earth would you want a MMORPG from Valve? Almost all of their games are very streamlined and simple, boring shooters. Portal being only with some level of innovativeness behind it, but by mechanics it's not really any more special than any other physics or puzzle game, and it has very, very little to do with MMORPG's. First Half-Life was pretty cool some years ago, but if you compare it to today's games, it's nothing special. They would also like to add all kinds of fun microtransactions through Steam, most likely. I tried TF2, but became bored after few days, as it's like WoWization of an online shooter. I mean, I sort of understand if you'd be little interested what they could come up with, but why exactly them? I couldn't right now think of worse company for that purpose.
Personally I find it difficult to name any studio, it's usually the indie studios I've never heard of or haven't made any game with the same group people before, that interest me most. I suppose Obsidsian Entertainment (Black Isle people in the house? bunch of RPG's with multiplayer) have potential. TaleWords (Mount & Blade) could be potential. As well as Piranha Bytes (Gothic, Risen). I don't know who and when have left these studios and when new blood have been taken in. So impossible to say how they would do, especially when difference between a single player RPG and a MMORPG is huge and it requires people with certain skills to develop.
I also secretly wish Rockstar made a MMORPG's out of their GTA franchise, which isn't completely impossible idea. GTA's are bit like gangster RPG's with huge open worlds and above average story. I believe IV has multiplayer too? I don't think money would be problem for them either. I could imagine they would hire Mythic or something to help with the MMORPG side of things, not that I agree with that!

I think people also don't realize that the only thing Valve has actually done is HL and HL2. CS was a mod done by players, TF was a mod done by players copying a mod done for Quake. Portal was done by someone else who used Valve to publish it. The zombie one was worked on by a group who licensed the valve engine and worked on it for years, I had been following it for a long time waiting. Near the end they hooked up with Valve to help get it finished and out the door.
Most of the games people think Valve is awesome for, they had nothing to do with.
With the Civ series type strategy game layer being controlled by guild and alliance leaders and officers
Battles, diplomacy, spying, and trading conducted like a traditional character-based MMO

Valve and Rockstar.
Ubisoft Montreal(Assassin's Creed), Team Ninja(Ninja Gaiden), and Santa Monica Studios(God of War).
Thought I should add I don't mean those games to be turned into mmo's, just giving examples incase someone wasn't aware of what they've done :P
Br0derbund.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

Honestly none.

I'd really like to see Bethesda hit the MMO scene. I'm also happy BioWare is getting in on some MMO action.
I'd also like to see any of the 2K games studios get into the mix with a BioShock MMO.
Bethesda!! Im sure they could bring something deep, meaningful and something different to the genre.
I would like to go back in time, and prevent Troika Games from dissolving.
Then have them make a Vampire mmorpg.
Vampire Bloodlines almost WAS an mmorpg...the fans found multiplayer code in it that was never finished.
On a side-note I agree with those who mentioned Valve, from the games I played from them their NPC's AI's are really great especially in Half-Life.
Maybe Futuremark could make some cool game with ridiculous graphics and sights but without any content at all.

I want a good ole' fantasy Bioware MMO.
Maybe one day...
