    Planetside 2

With a bit of Civilization, Minecraft, and Spore mixed into the background.

And space. With space ships and a control scheme mix of EVE or Homewrold for large ships and Jumpgate for small-ish ones. Interiors too for gun slinging boarding action!

    Depends. Is advertising budget separate?

Cause if it isn't, then I would probably put 15mil or so into the game and the rest into advertising.  Then I would make as close to a Triple A sandbox as I could, that had enough themepark elements to keep people from completely getting lost and just thrown into the deep end like alot of the newer indy sandboxes have done.

If i was given $50.000.000 to make a new MMO, I would have to do either a shadow run mmo due the gamealready being set up to be an mmo, or make a fantasy based mmo involving having your 'main' chatacter as well as alts. your alts would be played to do the crafting and resource farming, both which would take real time to do, ie. making the uber sword of doom, would take teh character say 45 minutes of real time to craft or more, in teh mean time you log out and play either a differetn alt  or your main

A survival horror MMO. Zombies all the way. Where "Survivor" horror had true meaning. I would need a lot of time to think of what features would work, no way I could be so sure in just a few minutes of thinking it over.

Hybrid Themepark/Sandbox MMO -2 Region Controlled Servers 1st Server (U.S and South America-Europe-Africa-Austrailia) 2nd Server (Asia, Japan, Middle East, Koreas) 2nd Server I proposed to keep RMT and gold spamming and purchasing in game limited to the East.

    Solo-Friendly

Group Friendly (Incentives for Grouping XP, Yield Better Drop Rates and Loot)

Time Skill Based System (ex. EVE Online) or Regular Skill Based with no Cap

In-Depth Crafting (ex.SWG) and Resource Gathering , Expermination, Resource Quality, Ground and Space Resources Everything is Craftable From Starships Ranging From A Fighter Craft Up To A Guild Controlled Capital Ship Fully Customizable, Clothes, Food, Weapons, Equipment, Armor, Furniture, Houses and Structures. Skinning.

Quests (Dyanmic Questing and Random Hidden Npcs To Recieve Rare Quests, Plus Regular Ol Static Quests)

Sidekicking- Enabling Players to Help Out Noobs in Already Completed Quests

Diplomacy and Reputation with NPC races and NPCs

Player Housing (Non-Instanced) Limitations would be set housing is only allowed on Capital Planets housing will not be allowed on quest or mission based planets to address lag and latency issues, also a remove housing feature which would be policed by players to remove abandoned housing after 3 months of account inactivity to address ghost towns and abandoned structures or a simple server reset that checks in the database of players inactive past 3 months and removes structures.

Housing would be similar to SWG's with fully customizable options and the ability to decorate, also would like to add the option to create own housing structures from scratch for those that like to dabble in creating new things.

Space Station (Guild Player Housing) For those who rather brave the depths of space than live life on the ground these (Guild) housings would be completely buildable and customizable to suit a guilds needs. (Military Themed Starbase, Trading Post, Pirate, etc)

Open Universe and Open World PVP-Consensual and FFA PVP) Here's the thing I would address with the problem people Have With FFA PVP, a good example is EVE set up the universe in terrorities set up for FFA PVP play and other terrorities you would enter disable FFA PVP to strike a balance and address griefing in safe ground and space, however if you choose to take on FFA PVP terrorities and the Guilds that inhabit them great risk and great reward will be a objective here, extremely rare spawns but spawn in great quantiy out in lawless space along with hidden mission NPCs on planets and stations, extremely dangerous NPCs will reside out here yielding great rewards as well.

    Raiding (Ground Only)

    4 Factions

Full On 3D Space Combat (a Mix of  X-Wing Vs Tie Fighter, Freelancer, and X-3) Fully Customizable Ship Interiors

Space will be a optional asset to the game Missions will be either space or ground focused neither will cross into each others domain.

    Polish

Future Expansions- Non Combat Professions  and Jobs, Minigames (Fishing, Gambling, Enteraining, Music,) More Skills, Balancing and Bug Fixes, More Ground Raids, Possible Planetary Defenses for FFA Terrorities, Atmospheric Flight, Military Bases, Labs, Basically things that would make the ultimate MMO, input from community would be helpful to keep both sandbox and themepark players happy.

I'd buy APB for $1, then pay myself the rest.  Sadly $50,000,000 isn't likely to cover the cost of making a decent MMO, so not much point trying.

...this would be fantastic. But if I'd have to guess, and I'm just spit ball'n here, but I think it would cost at least 900mil if not more and take atleast 10 years?

Shadowrun. Guns, magic, skill webs an entire generation of content. The game would write itself. There was an attempt a few years ago, but I guess they ran out of funding... One of the best setting for a game deserves to be made.

    or

a Traveler mmo. The pen and paper games were great. There is nothing like the character creation system. Having almost the greatest character ever and he has an injury and died on the operating table =).

Since I'm no longer a fan of the fantasy genre in any area. I would produce a sci-fi MMORPG. I think I would take what CCP has done with Eve and add even more sand to the box. I would use a very similar economic system, although I would insist upon having a stock market and more strict and enforced security and exchange policies to prevent people from getting scammed on the investment side. For instance, if a company wished to create a bank, there would be certain regulations they would have to abide by. Similarly, there would be regulations for publicly traded companies (stocks). Essentialy I would create more of a free market economy, only stepping in to enforce those regulations. But players would be free to make money however they choose within those regulations. If a corporation or a player steps out of those regulations, any money they might have "stolen" would be subtracted from their wallet and added to that of the victims. However, corporate espionage would not be regulated, only investments and stock related scenarios. If a company is stupid enough to allow a unscrutable element within the company, it will be on their head.

On the industrial side, I would provide the players upon launch with a set of basic blueprints and materials, and they through research and development could develop new blueprints and materials. For instance someone might create an undetectable cloaking device, and thus a need is created to develop a device that could detect said cloaking device.

Also, I would allow players and player organizations to control 'all' space, and might totally do away with NPCs, and create a totally player driven world (this might not be possible, but I can imagine).

I do understand that these ideas are somewhat radical, and if you disagree that's fine, but please be civil with your criticisms.

To hell with gamers.  If someone gave me $50 million I would take the money and run.

    Run for the hills!

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

    Fantasy:

Forgotten Realms 3rd edition based on Paul S. Kemp books.

    Sci-fi:

    Deus Ex.

Something based on the Rifts or Shadowrun licenses, easily my two favorite cyberpunk rpgs, and I personally think the genre could use a solid sci-fi/cyberpunk mmo.

a mix of space age and fantasy type MMO with land, air, and space combat. It would be a sand box game with a story as well, one that actually affects the world around you. Player cities and politics would be highly emphasized, as would the story and game play. It would play like a mix of a 3rd person shooter, visceral combat game, and standard MMO, although it would lean more towards the visceral combat. I would also emphasize that the game have a plethora of content and options for classes, such as domestic, political, and combat. Space gameplay wouldn't be an afterthought and would be extremely immersive (SWTOR did this), and land combat wouldn't be an afterthought either (STO did this). There would be a plethora of races, back story, and factions to create an extremely diverse universe for players to live in. I would also aim to create an economy that actually lived at breathed by giving each planet their own global economy network, which would have it's own price standards and item drop frequencies. For example, Planet A has a copious amount of Onetanium, and that is a resource that is needed badly on Planet X. Planet A wants Planet X's Twonibium, so they could either exchange currency or items. This would also create a merchant level class that would fly goods between planets for other players (some planets will be NPC worlds, other player run worlds). So a Planet's leading government can hire a player to send goods to another player run planet. The class system would be comprised of picking 1 combat and then either one domestic or political position. For combat, you pick a class and a power set; again another example, You  choose Guardian as your combat class, and then you pick a prisma magic and select Green Magic as your power set. Green Magic combines defense and healing, so most of your abilities will be defense abilities that have some sort of healing buff. It's all very complicated and hard to explain and I could go on for hours, but frankly I don't want to. Hahaha, that's about 1/20th of what I have in mind.

    - Huge World, say 10x the size of darkfall.

    - Eve Online's server technology to fill this huge land mass with people.

    - Open Pvp.

    - Full Loot.

    - Terraforming limited to digging tunnels, raising/lowering land mass, digging out caves.

    - Ecosystem very similar to Saga of Ryzom, mobs not limited to spawn location, but prey/weather.

    - Construction, specifically a set of buildings from huts to mansions, developed with addons and customization.

    - Full item lists for housing, from plants to four poster beds.

    - City tools to group up housing and territory control.

    - Military buildings for territory control.

    - UO skill system but expanded on with more skills.

    - Alignment system, your race isn't evil or good, actions decide your fate.

    - No safe zones.

    - Ships and naval combat.

    - Player policed (GMs step in when things become to dominated as SB became).

    - Warfare on all levels.

    - Destructible buildings.

    - Full crafting system.

    - Abolish the triforce system of healer / tank / damage.

    - Injection of realism.

In summary a set of tools for the players to dictate how there world evolved. Obviously its the sandbox crowd  this game would be for.

    Transformers Online

    - Create your own Transformer: pick a robot look, pick a vehicle, customise them;

    - five classes: leader (offense/team buff), soldier (offense/tank), medic(defense/team buff), engineer (, and scout

    - pick a side: Autobot or Decepticon (and change sides later if you want, i.e. "turncoat/betrayal" missions);

    - fight alongside Optimus Prime, Megatron and other Transformer A-listers;

    - level-up, upgrade weapons, upgrade armour, make your vehicle faster, stronger, etc.

You know? All that stuff. ;-)

I would make a wizarding game based on the Harry Potter world and make it as detailed as it is described in the books.  I would call it Wizards World Online.  But, then again, I'm already doing that for free.

How would you handle these important things though:

Junkticons - because they're cool, and the game will flop with no way to insert a Wierd Al song.

    Unicron - Raid that face

Headmasters - folding-people-robot-suits go! would be a fun avatar mechanic though

Stan Bush - A Transformers MMO is going to need a truck load of bad-ass 80's power-rock ballads. He'll need time to write them all, say 30%+ of the overall soundtrack.

High Moon Studios - TF:WFC was a damned fun game. Not so much saying on the MMO front, but if you haven't played it, you'd like it.

And to not overextend the last post...

I'd build a game around the world of Snow Crash.

The corporate nationstate sprawl world of LA and the Raft, the game-within-a-game of the Metaverse, where your toon could have its own avatar.

One seamless, consistent world where the rules change border to border, where driving around the city could require an "attunement" quest of sorts since you need spereate ID's for everything.

It's bad-ass cyberpunk, through and through.

Multi-factional, probably a few dozen to pick from, each with split up alliances/interests. Everyone's trying to move up those ladders, both territorially and materially.

Not so much player-run corps at first, but franchises of the mega corps, then branching out into multi-corp franchising, or rapid escalation up a single corp.

Do freelance work making mini-games/apps for the Metaverse, magnetically harpoon-surf the highways as a courier, spread/stop the infopocalypse, become a raft warrior or refuse, or take the ultimate responsibility for the mafia:

Pizza Delivery, 30min or less or you shot the driver, burn his car and still file a class-action lawsuit.

But nothing stands in the way of a Deliverator.
