Lord of the Rings Online: November Update & 2011

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

MMORPG.com's Jaime Skelton has a lot to say about the recent happenings in Lord of the Rings Online. Bot the upcoming November update and the just-announced expansion, Rise of Isengard, garner attention from Jaime who has quite a bit to say about each. Check out Jaime's LOTRO: November Update & 2011 and then leave a comment below.

Since its change in September – a short span of time for any MMO – Lord of the Rings Online has thrived from its free-to-play transition, gaining more active players and subscribers as well as increasing revenue. With the initial hurdles of tweaking and making immediate adjustments after the free-to-play transition done, it's time Turbine looked to the future. This week, we spoke with Adam Mersky, Executive Director of Communications, and Aaron Campbell, Producer for The Lord of the Rings Online, at Turbine about what's in store for the remainder of the year, and beyond.

Looks good, could use some extra quests in  Enedwaith, getting really boring doing the daylies to get rep.

If it's not broken, you are not innovating.

And Turbins said they would never give players the edge above others using there store.

" The crafting UI has been revamped to simplify and streamline the process, and new ingredient packs will become available in the Store for those who want to save themselves the time it would take to gather necessary materials."

Whats the point in having gathering in the game if they are just going to allow us to buy the ingredients? Why not just put all the gear in the store that can be crafted then you can just get rid of crafting all together. This is why I dont play F2P games. They take the fun out of it. Want the latest crafted gear? Go to the store. Want a stat boost?!? Go to the store! Next they will be seeling a scroll that turns you into a level 70 just to get to the whatsonotthere end game.

Items made with crafting packs can't be transferred to other characters, sold in the AH or anything else. That's at least something. I'm just waiting for the day when crafted armor becomes better than rep armor.

But my point is that it gives players that have money to burn up get those ingredients without effort. Therefore having gear allot faster then say those who cant afford the store. Giving an unfair advantage and making it so that Kinship (guild) members that pay leave there friends who dont pay, in the dust. Not only that, it takes away the sense of accomplishment. To many developers are dumbing there games down.

Well the point is really some of us don't mind gathering our own mats and some of those same people really don't care how others get the mats they use, I don't care if they are purchased by other players in the Turbine store or off of the auction house as long as they don't follow the suggestion you make and force us into doing things one way that doesn't work for us.

Ok then you immediately seem to complain about your own exageration, when did they put crafted gear in the store?  Oh yeah that was what you said not them.

Look,  if putting these things in the store is going to make the game fun for people who didn't play it before and help them be able to develop content that I will also enjoy what is the purpose of worrying about how someone else is playing the game?  I mean it's not like you folks are worried that there are children starving in Africa, so why the concern over what someone spends on a game they enjoy?  Especially a game that is not built on competition against other players.

We should all by now know what is fun for you may not be fun for another, and I honestly think if how other players are getting what they get in this game is effecting your fun you have issues that go beyond anything the devs can do to help.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

Someone always finds something to complain about... Those crafting packs are completely optional and since the items made from them can't be sold and destroy what little player market the game has left who cares? Anyway... I'm still hung up on Isenguard being a "free expansion". That's the real news.

This guy is right.  Also I want to point out (and he said it as well) players could always gain ingredients without doing the work  through the auction house.

You realize that these "ingredient packs" will contain things that are also purchasable on the AH.  And that you can pick up enough TP to buy lots of stuff just from deeds.  I'm hella psyched to see Isenguard.  And to get a little more oomph for my LM.

    Important facts:
    1. Free to Play games are poorly made.
    2. Casuals are not all idiots, but idiots call themselves casuals.
    3. Great solo and group content are not mutually exclusive, but they suffer when one is shoved into the mold of the other. The same is true of PvP and PvE.
    4. Community is more important than you think.

what's the rush if you were enjoying the game to begin with?  that's not meant to sound as sarchastic as it does i'm sure, but what I mean is..if your bored with the basic gameplay getting to Mordor today isn't going to make the game any more fun for you.

Who's leaving? Now that that game is f2p its turn over rate is going to be sick! Who gives a shit if a few lifetimers leave for a year? Also there is content in-between that time so it's not like you will have nothing to do for a year.

I really do not think that high level players will see anything new. They will want to save high level updates for the expansion. I see a lot more lowbie stuff coming out in the near updates. I think that having to wait another year for an expansion epsecially after that timy SoM expansion is going to erode the veteran player base even more. Lotro is going to have more and more WoW kids and less of the great community that it once had. Who knows maybe its time to move on.

    "Onward to adventure".

" Rise of Isengard will be available for purchase in the LOTRO Store in the Fall of 2011 "

so just a mistype on here....

Aaaaannnnd, this month's content is all froob BS.  I told people when the game changed to F2P that this would cause the devs to focus new content on low levels and ignore high level long-term players.  They told me I didnt know what I was talking about.  Hmmmm.  ~looks over November content update~  Guess I was right afterall.  Shame really.

This is most likely a direct example of Turbine learning from past mistakes.  DDO came before Lotro.  Before that game went free to play, like many mmorpg',s the game focused all it's attention on higher level players.  On the forums there was a large outcry for them to please do something for lower level characters in terms of adding content so that veteran players didn't have the feeling that they were having to repeat the same leveling path everytime.

I for one find it refreshing that Turbine in its present day often adds content to its mid and low level areas in their games.  without this kind of attention games grow stale and have to rely solely on player turnover to survive.

It's not just turbine learning this lesson etiher.  Look at WoW, and COX..both are drastically redesigning or adding content for their lower level areas.  Look at EQ2 in the past year they have changed starting zone options.  The fact is that these more established games must change in order to stay relevant in a game market where there is always the promise of something new on the horizon.

My point here is, this has nothing to do with the new f2p "options" made availible by turbine and more to do with staying polished and "new" for their veteran gamers.

That's not really buying power since you can get it without paying for it....

I'm a Lotro vet since beta. I was also a SWG vet so I know what it is like to get burned completely by a game. I do not feel this way about Lotro. I had my doubts about F2P at first too but to be honest, this is a great move for the game. I am not subscribed right now but with all the characters and expansions I already had, I just bought all the quest packs and BAM pretty much lifetime now since almost everything is unlocked.

Personally I think there is still alot to do with endgame (skirmishes, tons of big instances, legendary items, etc.). However its also fun to make a new character now as it is much easier to find help on certain quests. Best of all, my items sell much faster on my server's AH now.

Sure there are alot more kiddies now and I've had to put a few on ignore (though the chat is pretty well moderated by GMs). But honestly, the pros so far outway the cons. Also many AH items have already been added to the Store (clothing dyes are an example).

The expansion is fall 2011.  There will be updates before then...like the one scheduled for November 29th of this year.
