As a casual gamer, I voted for Guild Wars 2, but I won't be entirely surprised if it doesn't match the hype that is everywhere. I hope it does, but I don't want my hopes crushed, so I'm going to try to not get them too high.
"In order to qualify for this category, a game must be currently announced and carry a reasonable expectation that we will see a launch some time in 2011"
I think GW2 will win this category by a long shot but from what I see on this website and other sites, they haven't even established a year of release yet. I dont think 2011is even considered reasonable.
Have to LOL at all the dire predictions killing of hype killing ( insert game name here) .
Does anyone think a game could be succesful without some advertising?
I'm for GW2 all the way. Funny but most people who played GW1 were clamoring for any, then more, not less information for a long time. The 'hype' being grinched about is class skill videos and writeups about what some of the plans for the future are. For this or any game thats not overhyping, its information.
I guess I'll vote for GW2. Love the style, it's presentation is slick. I also tend to think they'll be better off in offering up something new. Rift is just, well, it's been done. The graphics are pretty, but the rifts are not all that interesting, and the class system is half-baked. Of course, all I'm going on is beta but even if they worked wonders, it's not going to break ground in any meaningful way.
SW:TOR would be my choice if I were following it more closely. I'm sort of avoiding the hype so as to not be disappointed.
DC Universe? Not my bag. I've tried several of the super hero MMO's and I just can't get into em'. As far as they go though, DC is looking nice.
TERA, well, I'll have to look more into that one, don't know enough about it to say I'm all that excited about it. I do like what I've seen, and if it does not have a hot-bar I may be sold. Classes sound a bit tired though.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
These games certainly do not hold any interest to me due to the fact that they are JUST machines
TERA - we get bombarded with supposedly "relevant" news info and posts on how awesome it will be, but so far the only real feature it seems ot have is non-targeting combat. Otherwise its just prettier aion or any other <insertyourgrindgamehere>. Now it would all still be good if it was f2p, but its p2p game(published by heinious and horrible frogster in europe, so europeans are yet again screwed) and a p2p game with huge multi-million investments and budgets and bills reaching almost a billion dollars. Now where did i hear already about a hyped p2p game with huge budget and too much hype? Oh right, apb.. II predict a huge disappointment from the community once the game is released. Maybe it will go f2p in few years but it will certainly won't get a huge market share.
Star Wars: The Old Republic - everything I said about TERA still holds true, except that the combat is utterly weak in this one. I will admit, I had a HUGE hopes when it was anounced that third kotor saga part will be a mmo. However after that all I saw was a hype and disappointing little bits of actual information(from story to gameplay). The hype is dangerous for this one. Of course since its Bioware, it might get overrated and praised like fps effect II, but IMO that won't be the case. The game has nothing innotive nor interesting. The core essence of what made KOTOR great is gone and we have yet another rvr game with focus on pve And the only feature that is fully advertised is voice acting? The whole info suppresion, the fired employee blog, the lack of actual info and too much hype leads me to believe that people will be either hugely disappointed with this or will try to justify on why it did not achieve anything significant or why it is undeserving to be a part of kotor awesomeness.
Guild Wars II - well, this still has its hype, but its managed and controlled (unlike TOR or TERA). However all I see so far is guild wars 1 with better graphics. None of the mistakes guild wars made are fixed, sadly.
DC Universe Online - sadly so far it seems that the champions online situation will repeat itself, game will stumble around for a year or so only to go f2p afterward.
Rift - now this has a lot of hype, but the actual info leaks and bits somewhat justify it. The rift dynamics sound interesting and the multiclass system as well. I certainly hope it won't be just another grind to play as it has all the elements of good old school mmorpg in its development, which i like.
Overall, while of this list I will choose Rift, that is certainly NOT my most awaited mmorpg. It goes somewhat like this:
1. Secret World
2. ArcheAge
3. Faxion
4. Rift.
You know for a minute there you ALMOST sounded like you kenw what you were talking about. I read half way down then scrolled a little more and caught a glimpse at your "list".
You've got to be kidding me. Secret World will be a joke, you know we've tried a skill based freestyle system several times over and you know what happens? they suck.
Rift? It's beta is horrible, moreso than FFXIV's Rift won't be doing anything but reliving CO and STO's lifecycle.
The rest of your list I haven't even heard of so I won't bother.
I agree with your points on GW2 and Tera, but the rest is just LoLable.
My vote went to GW2. I was awaiting SWTOR, but with every news release I have lost interest. Just seems like it will be a bit boring after the first month or so. GW2 seems to be the only MMO coming out that interests me.
TOR easily. Must laugh at everyone saying the combat in TOR looks bad, everyone that has actually played the game was completely suprised by it, some even said the pace of it made even TERA look slow..Good news is that due to everyone lowering their expectations this game might actually blow them away.
GW2 Will obviously win this award because its B2P. It has some nice features but the fact there is no subscription will get everyone on its back. (Will be the biggest let down due to hype, many people ignore their own advice on this one)
that's three, irrespective of how you try to amalgamate them :P
I also agree though, my vote goes to GUILD WARS 2!
Reason being simple, they are contributing something innovative and ground breaking to MMOs. Not that the others don't in some small way also, but GW2 definitely takes it that extra step further

Rift is good and is pretty close to TOR for me.
TERA looks great visually and combat wise.
Here is what I have to say about your opinion of GW2. I do not believe it is going to be revealed as the most anticipated because of it being B2P. I bet it would win even if TOR and Rift and TERA were B2P.
as for the hype, and people not practicing what they preach...how about this. never completely trust what you see in gameplay videos until you have gotten your hands on the game (demo, beta, released, doesn't matter). After that never, ever keep playing a game that you find is fundamentally flawed...its never going to improve. What you define as fundamentally flawed is all up to you. For me, I look at core gameplay, beneath the classes and the skills, beneath the graphics and the animations, beneath the questing system, and look at what the system is based on...oh and I love the dodge rolling thing that they added, partially because of nostalgia from my Legend of Zelda days.
I have played GW2 (demo) and at this core, the game is so unshakably solid that the I knew instantly (well, a few seconds) that it was better than any other MMO I have played. In contrast, when I tries rift, the whole thing just sucked. I killed one thing and was like "thats it this is the worst thing I have ever played". While it may not be precisely true, and I might have some biases about some of the combat mechanics, such as the hit dodging system that many games use, my personal rule about not playing a game I have that kind of core problem with still comes into play.
I am not going to play TOR because I'm just not going to. I just don't care about starwars lore, and I just don't think I could enjoy any of the stories that game could offer. However, from what I can tell of the actual combat, it does a couple of this well, and it looks pretty flashy but I can't say anything for certain. I haven't played the game, but if I ever tried I would try bounty hunter because they can freaking fly around.../shrug
TERA might be slower than other things but it doesn't exactly feel that way to play it. It feels like playing a console ARPG. Whether you like that kind of thing is up to you.
the reason I say all this isn't to exactly explain my opinion about all these games, as I have already posted all of this earlier on this thread (or was it this one, I don't know...to many of these). I just wanted to compare these games on a matching criteria, the core first impressions of combat mechanics...I mean that is what most people do while playing these games, unless we are crafting of course.
I used to TL;DR, but then I took a bullet point to the footnote.
GW2 hands down, with Rift a close second. Tera just seems like another fantasy title with your usual trappings of skimpy/monstrous armors and a new graphics coating. TOR is also shaping up to be pretty much WoW in space. Meh. GW2 is going a full dynamic route that, I believe, will be game changing, and Rift is adding the dynamic side with an inclusion of themepark in there as well making both games definitely intriguing.
Who is to say that Guild Wars 2 is over hyped?? yeah alot of talk and alot of anticipation, hmmm?? maybe becuase GW2 was announced almost 4 years ago and still TBA.
Im more than amped about this game, and it will definately be a game that will stomp the comp.

Vote TERA
Hype sucks. Guild Wars will win cause of it

Even so, I'm pumped.
don't know what to do right now.

GW2, I'm really waiting for it.
Rift also sounds very good.

Aww, I should have voted for TERA!
Just my personal preference. Tera.

I feel the same way.
I was looking forward to rift and swtor but have begun to lost interest in them, but GW2 stands out for me.

"It'll be dark soon."
"Aye...that it will."
I vote RIFT been wanting a nice large PvE game to come out with nice class diversity for a long time. SWTOR also looks interesting though.
Rift
Good luck Rift
