Square Enix did almost nothing but in-house focused testing ...

Turned out they were extremely wrong about in-house testing and keeping things under wraps.

It should be noted that players from Japan did not like FFXIV either.  A fail game is a fail game and they failed completely.

I have a theory as to how the in-house testing for FFXIV went.

QA Testers to QA lead: "We've found most of the bugs but the gameplay is utter crap, no one is going to play it, it's not fun.  We should know we play 12 hours a day."

QA Lead to Department Manager: "Our testers spend 12 hours in the game each day and have found most of the bugs.  Oh, and they think the gameplay could be improved."

Dept. Mgr. to Director:  "The QA team is playing 12 hours a day!"

That.... and no one but the QA team every actually played the game they were working on/in charge of.

PS:  Rift is very fun.  image

Why the hell would anybody argue about this?

I preordered and took the 6 month pricing option.  Absolutely no doubt in my mind I will get my moneys worth based on what I have seen in the four betas.

Yeh I did the same Ironclad. I would have been interested to read others opinions on the topic here but it looks like a king tide of shit to wade through;  kids arguing over word definitions... wth lol.

I wish they would make 1month founder sub plan. I never stay in game for longer then 1month (maybe 2 exceptions in 15 years of gaming or so). If there were 1month for 10$ I would take it. 3 months is wayy too long especially for themepark game. I just dont see what you can do in game after 1month except for boring grind for boring gear, running same dungeon 100x and waiting for expansion, that said, I think all those things are boring...

You get one month free with the purchase of the game. Do you mean a second month?

For the life of me I can't understand all of the "opinions" in this thread. The company is offering an economic incentive to subscribe for more months up-front. How is this a bad thing? Many games have offered a lifetime subscription, which is more expensive and higher risk for most people to "get their money's worth" than a 6-month subscription.

It still shocks me how many people jump on any post about this game and try to turn it into drama - and that is saying a lot for the mmorpg.com forums!

Here is a great idea.  For a retail or digital purchase make the price $24.99(US) and set the monthly billing subscription at $9.99 after the first 30-days.  You will push more sales of the game and you'll retain or pick up more players beyond the inital 30-days of gameplay.  Take that number and set it against the $49.99 retail/digital and $14.99 and see how much more revenue will be generated as a result.

    Momo sucks, I have proof.

Sorry, my mistake. Most games I try is digital download and then you pay only per month. You dont have to buy game itself. Havent done research on Rift cause will buy it only if it will be super cheap/free trial..

And in that case they should make digital download by 10$ or 20$ cheaper...

All I know is I will be paying 10 bucks a month as long as I play Rift. It falls in Line with the other gAmes I play so it's nothing special.

Hey, I was just going for a little clarification

Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.

  • NadiliNadili Member Posts: 197

Haven't read over all replies but I think it's smart marketing.  Don't kid yourself either founder pricing will come up down the line again when subs drop and they want more people in game they will make other offers.  What it does accomplish is out of the gate many people will go for the $9.99 locking in subs for at least 6 months they can really work on content and keep players subbing if they are smart.

I don't think any company is really going to do that. That's like throwing free money away for them.

Most companies looks at it as:

"Okay, so you didn't buy the box, but we made boxes anyways that we have to pay for. We aren't going to give you a discount because we still have to eat the overall cost of shipping boxes to everyone else who wants the box art, so we just charge one flat rate."

The Founder's Price more than makes up for buying a box instead of a digital download because you still get the sub for $10/mo.

Again, yeah they COULD do it that way. But it's like buying soda at McDonald's.

Soda doesn't really cost them $1.25 a cup but they will sell it to you for that price, even if you argue rightly about them still being able to make a profit by lowering it.

@Talin: If people had valid points about why they don't like something, that's cool. But as you see, they will bring up any stupid point to complain/derail a thread over (subscription definition/misleading posts) if they don't like a game. Just the internets is all...

It's a nice ploy to get people to put down money up front. It's really a bad bet, no one knows what there is over 30 or if there is even 3 or 6 months worth of content.
I learned my lesson with the pre-order.
I bet you can sell your pre-order.  I'd try that and bet someone will take you up on it.

Anyway, a little more clarity around this Founder Pricing so it's not perceived as a half-truth, though it just might be a copy-writing thing.  So It "isn't" only good until March 15th, but will only be made available to "new accounts" through March 15th.

After March 15th, any player that purchased a "Founder" subscription packet price of 3-months or 6-months, which are the discounted rates, will 'continue' to receive that same discounted rate on a recurring basis and 'not' incurr a higher monthly subscription rate as long as the player does not cancel.

Still a good and very reasonable deal.

Basically this. I usually get years out of a game I like. Some games lose their luster, like Aion, and I still got 6 months of fun out of Aion. I will probably get at least 6 months out of this game judging by the fun I had in Beta. So, even if I did cancel for some reason, chances are if I did I would probably not resubscribe anyhow. The deal is reasonable, very reasonable.

The founder's pricing option might entice me enough to purchase the game since the past couple of days have piqued my interest in Rift, and this is added incentive, for sure. I'm not sure how anyone could have been confused by the original post, though.  Anyone remotely familiar with subscription based MMOs should understand what the term "founder" insinuates or, if not, request clarification without digressing to the point of turning an otherwise helpful thread into a steaming pile of crap.

Heck, I wasn't even aware this pricing option was available until today since I only started researching information on the game yesterday.

    sub·scrip·tion  (sb-skrpshn)
    n.

    1.

    a. A purchase made by signed order, as for a periodical for a specified period of time or for a series of performances.

Subscriptions by definition are fee based.

So, you can subscibe to a free newsletter by email and... money goes to who?

You can subscribe to a free newspaper and money goes to... who?

Quoting one defintion out of a bunch isn't intelligent.. it's dishonest.

    Subscription Meaning and Definition

(n.) Sum subscribed; amount of sums subscribed; as, an individual subscription to a fund.
(n.) The signature attached to a paper.
    (n.) Submission; obedience.
(n.) A method of purchasing items produced periodically in a series, as newspapers or magazines, in which a certain number of the items are delivered as produced, without need for ordering each item individually; also, the purchase thus executed.
(n.) The acceptance of articles, or other tests tending to promote uniformity; esp. (Ch. of Eng.), formal assent to the Thirty-nine Articles and the Book of Common Prayer, required before ordination.
(n.) A paper to which a signature is attached.
    (n.) The act of subscribing.
    (n.) That which is subscribed.
(n.) That part of a prescription which contains the direction to the apothecary.
(n.) Consent or attestation by underwriting the name.

    Please. Stop. Now. It's embarrassing.

Why can't you people who want to change subject at least have some good material?

    This is too easy.

"a. A purchase made by signed order, as for a periodical for a specified period of time or for a series of performances."
Where does it say "free newspaper" or "free newsletter". Please, tell me, i want to know.

To subscribe is to sign up (agree to) regardless if you have to pay or not. Thats why they have to make it clear if the subscription service is free or paid ("Get 24 issues with your paid subscription" and "Subscribe to our free Newsletter")

    ?

The conversation is about MMORPG, not newspapers, magazines or newsletters. If you have a subscription, you're paying money on a scheduled basis to a company to play the MMORPG. Usually this is monthly. If you play a Free to Play game, you do not have to buy the guy or pay a subscription fee to connect to the game, but there are things you buy from a cash shop to finance the game. If you're talking Buy To Play (Guild Wars), you buy the box, but do not pay any additional money for the game to play it online. Stop being an argumentative donkey.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
