    I wish you guys in the game good luck. Me myself haven't bought it yet, too occupied with other stuff even if it seems nice. I'm just waiting for Guild Wars 2 and The Secret World to come out. 

    Anyone who can describe the best and worst part of Rift so far?

    It certainly is. However, if you combine this with something their lead designer said, then the glass will seem half full and not half empty. Basically in an interview he said that he talked with the investors and they agreed that they will keep the whole development team that made the game intact. That and the minimal issues the game is suffering can account for some fast content updates.

    I did not say that everyone is from WoW. I've said that Trion evidently and aggressively marketed the game aiming for the WoW population and promising something different, while it's not like this.

    Think that would be biased, based on that one's experience. One guy might say that "omg invasions are so fun you fight forces on all map then a world boss spawns and your raid goes to kill that and there are rewards, it's insane", i can come and say that after doing 3 of those you get extremely bored, the rewards wont buy you anything useful, by the time you get enough "reward currency" for one zone you've heavily outleveled that zone etc. Depends on the perspective.

     

    All i can say is that Rift is fun, and if you did not try it and it's not too much for your budget, you should give it a whirl. I bet you'll have fun for at least 1 month. On the other hand, if you expect something essentially different than a decently-polished theme park with some bells and whistles, something which you can call home for a long time, there are big chances you will be dissapointed. For sure i was, i saw potential in the game, trusted the "dynamic content" focus that Trion's devs seemed to have.

     

    Personally, now that i've burned my fingers once, i'd wait for this first "world event" thing to pass and gather oppinions after.

    You misunderstand me. I am not saying EVE is a failure, becouse I dont think that an mmo needs a million people to be a success. If it makes money its a success. But when you compare sub numbers of EVE vs WoW you see what attracts the bigger audiance and its not innovation. That is all I am saying.

    Err... I'm certain it's not nearly so cut-and-dry as that.

    There are myriad reasons people would play WoW over Eve, and "not wanting innovation" is only one *possible* reason. It's not a guaranteed reason by any stretch.

    To my knowledge, no poll has ever been done to see how WoW players overall feel about innovation.

    More people may prefer fantasy over sci-fi. More people may prefer characters over ships. More people may prefer live "action-based" combat over firing photons from a laser cannon. More people may prefer a terrestrial experience to a space-based one. More people may prefer simpler game mechanics to more complex ones....

    and on and on and on...

    Claiming that "more people play WoW, therefor more people don't want innovation" is a huge leap of conjecture on your part. Many WoW players may actually want innovation, but in the meantime are settling with a game that they can at least hop in to and play with their friends. Many people may define innovation differently than others.

    Again... the possible reasons go on and on.

    Funny thing about all these people claiming to be tired of theme park MMOs and holding out GW2/SWTOR is that those are bigger theme parks than Rift is, yes both are good but  if you hate Rift cause it linear you are going to hate both of them even more.

    If that is the logic then it can also bring developers to the idea that "hey, maybe mmo's aren't a good investment at all and we should bet out of them."

    Or "Most people want themepark mmo's but companies can't make them happen therefore mmo's are a bad investment".

     

    Other than that, I don't want any game to fail. Too many people put their hard work into these games and want to feel like they have done something worthwhile. It must be horrible for any developer to put in all that work and money and then fail. Very disheartening.

    You really have to learn one thing about life: NOBODY is buying your products for mercy.

    I live from drawing and writing. So I know firsthand. If what I draw or write is sub par, people don't buy it. End of story. Nobody ever bought my paintings for mercy just because I put so much heart and work into it. And BOY I DID! But is that enough for a customer to give me his hard earned money? No.

    So I don't get mercy and I have none to spare in turn. End of story.

    I don't want to see Rift fail, because they did good groundwork. But I definitely DO want to see SOME MMos fail! What is bad needs to fail to make an example. Without failed games, without us gamers stop buying trash, the industry will never move forward. Example: Star Trek Online. Cryptic made these games and ESPECIALLY STO just to make quick bucks with cheap development and the IP lure. STO has to die, for no other reason as to show that some sorts of scams don't work. Alas they do work and so companies continue to spill cheap trash on the market, knowing full well enough people will buy it for the hype or the brand or both. Like Dragon Age 2.

    If I were immortal and money endless I'd be more generous. But simply said, life is way too short to waste it with BAD GAMES!

     

    EDIT: Don't get me wrong. I have all sympathy for people whose idea failed. It's horrible and I wish that to nobody. But that doesn't mean I have to buy their crap just to comfort some game developing millionaires.

    He's not saying "I don't want to see MMOs fail, so out of sympathy people should go buy them".

    He's saying "I don't want to see MMOs fail out of empathy for the people who put all that hard work into creating them". That it must really suck to have put so much time into a single project - several years in many cases - only to have it release practically DOA.

    I can definitely agree with him there, and I don't disagree with you. Every person or company creating any kind of product has to face that reality: People may not like their work and it may flop.

    But that has nothing to do with 'wishing failure upon them'.

    I agree that Rift is not that great.  But the fact it is in a diffrent settings than WOW made me buy it and play for the first sub  month.  I doubt very much I even consider subing longer. 

    The main reason I dont like RIFT is that its not really that polished as ppl claimed.  First 20 levels are fine - with decent progression and nice looking areas.  After 30.. it becomes sooo lazy from all perspectives that its not even funny.

    Altar quests ???  Why on earth are there altars in middle of nowhere with 50 roaming mobs around it?  Thats even worse than WAR cause at least they created some ruins or temple to make you go to.  TRION... nah dont bother....

    Gear progression after 30 is terrible.  Some items are simply not available from doing quests for example - on my lvl 38 cleric... Im holding a lvl 31 2 hand mace that dropped from random mob.  Done every single quest up to this point... no 2 hander mace as rewards...  And 90% of the quests dont give any item rewards.

    Cost of respec.  I bought a respec that said it would cost 30 gold.  When I actually bought it ... I was charged for 5 blue coins and 45 gold.  Yes... its this bad in terms of bugs.  I haven't respeced since...

    Custimor service... None existant.  I wanted to hear from GM about this respec "bug"... I have waited over 80 hours and no reply yet.... Thats how bad it is

    Mob pathing at higher lvls becomes a joke.  Run through tents or trees or walls...  They do it all. 

    Its WAR all over again feeling for me.  Bad PVE content for all to see at higher lvls.  Lazy work from Devs and obviously rushed out content that very little effort was put into.  And the quality control is just awful.

    You did not buy a respec you unlocked a new role :p Also yes there is not much 2 handers out there especially for clerics since most of the specs are for spellcasting and healing (only shaman spec is 2 handed dps).

    The ultimate judgement of any game is whether or not it is fun to play. I've been playing MMO's for more than a decade now and can see that Rift is in many senses generic, bits of EQ2,  of WOW, LOTRO and WAR abound. But that doesn't matter, all these games have built on what went on before, there is no prize for being unique, if there were perhaps we'd all be playing EVE.

    Though I am jaded with the genre as a whole, I have been surprised by Rift and have found it fun to play, I've even enjoyed replaying zones with new alts. It may not do originality but what it does, it does very well.

    It can't please everyone, however for those seeking a new game it is well worth a try. If though you're filled with cynicism and loathing for what has gone before, then you've seen it all before.

     Useless post, more like an opinion. How can this make the game itself very bad? Think what you are trying to say before writing it down. If Rift is so WoW to you types and it is the whole reason that makes it very bad... then what WoW is? I mean Rift is good game. It looks good, plays good everything is done very well. Except maybe crafting (because i prefer more minigamish crafting). But overall, Rift is very good game despite what you people compare it. It's not very original i give you that but claiming that it is very bad is just plain wrong. I do however feel too that its wearing out quickly... but i hope they can fix that with the upcoming expansions and new content!

    Opinion posts are useless, eh?

    So, what does that say about the rest of yours after that line?

    • If we're talking PvP, then prestige 6 is a huge investment of time. I'd say it takes two months for someone semi-hardcore to get there and get all the tier 2 PvP gear. Especially if you're running in random groups like I do.

    • There are societies in every zone that you can gain reputation with them. Some can be done via dailies, some via running dungeons, some via questing.

    • The dungeons themselves are very interesting and challenging. They are also different than their normal counterparts with added abilities on same bosses and added bosses.

    • Those dungeons give tokens that you can convert into expert group or raid rift summoning tokens. Have you done any of those with your group?

    • Then there is the raid itself.

    • And of cousre we'll see about the new content introduced in two days from now.

    And these are probably the big stuff. There are more stuff, maybe minor to me, like hunting artifacts or doing puzzles etc.

    For all that, you blatantly side-stepped his actual complaint, and responded to a strawman instead.

    Just checking here ... did you by any chance bought a third role slot instead of respeccing?

    Regarding weapons, viable options are staves and also 1H maces + totems. It all depends on the actual stats offered.

    I'm sure I could make a much better list of things that I dislike in Rift than these half hearted attempts. Perhaps exactly because I like the game.

    I bought the 3rd role slot long before - So no - It was not that.  The game charged me 5 blue coins 45 gold for the respec.  I triple checked it.

    I guess I am confused. It's a theme-park MMO. That's the genre of gaming you are gonna get. What could possibly be changed to make a theme-park MMO less like every other one out there? If you aren't looking for this type of game, why even bother playing it?

    You must have done something to piss the game off then, because It's only 50g to respec at 50, I've done it several times.

    Pretty much this.

    In my opinion, even though it's a themepark, it's still done a hell of a lot better than most other themepark MMOs.

    The bird in hand is Rift. If you cannot take it for what it is (appreciate its good points) and have some fun with it, IF you can ONLY look forward to the two birds in the bush, then in my opinion you need to take a break from gaming.

     I'm looking forward to it actually.  Most of them have pretty much guaranteed themselves they will end up being disappointed because their expectations are downright comical at this point.  Gonna be a great time for forums.

    Just like they always do.  Hell, many of them are present in this very thread that will be praising the game at first and then within a few weeks will be bitching about the game and cursing the heavens. 

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
