"The Engineer cannot fit!", "It's supported by the lore!", "The lore is bunkum!", "Reality has parallels to the patterns of advancement in their world!", "Reality is bunkum!", and so on. Huge excuse for xenophobia, really, just the fear of anything new. It's been less about the Engineer and more about how some can't stop fetishising fantasy as something that can only be a medieval setting with magic.
It's been less about the Engineer and more about bitterness over how the game isn't just a purely medieval thing, with magic. I'm seeing a surprising amount of that, but yet the polls and comments outside of more hardcore minorities have shown that people love the Engineer. So I suspect that the Engineer is going to be massive with the majority when the game goes live, but it'll upset a hardcore minority - a minority who'll get increasingly more depressed over how they can't handle the clockpunk elements (even Divinity's Reach will have them!), before just dropping out of the game entirely.
It's all for the best, really. It's planted the seed of doubt in the minds of people whom might otherwise have just stuck around to troll inside of the game itself. It's not Guild Wars 1, no, but then it was never supposed to be. It's 250 years later and Guild Wars 2, and some people are reminding me of an old addage about age... if something comes before your time, it's part of the natural order of things, if something happens when you're young, it's new and exciting, if something happens when you're getting on in years, it's an abomination.
Old farts who don't like new ideas, then. I'm an old fart myself, but I prefer being more progressive.
Most of those who played Guild Wars when they were young though are never going to be able to accept that Guild Wars 2 is a different beast, apparently. That's okay, Guild Wars 2 could use some fresh blood to go with the new ideas. Or if it really bothers people, they can sit around in Divinity's Reach and talk about how much better things were in their day. Using a sundail instead of one of those cluuu--watchmacallits they got on that there them tower over yonder; Having to water crops the hard way with irrigation relying on rain and people with buckets of water; Having to go outside to take a leak instead of enjoying the joys of indoor plumbing (which they now have); Having REEEL HOOMANZES to play the music instead of that there mechanical contraption; Hiring people to hollar the news instead of having it printed and conveniently delivered to their doors.
Yep, roleplaying that might give them some satisfaction, and boy, it might just tell us how much better Tyria used to be. Yep! The old Tyria was so much better!
You do love your hyperbole and misrepresentation dream, I am amused .
And Meowhead, how dare you! Spending time on inconsequential matters like happiness, family and love when there's video games that won't come out for nearly another year to be discussed! I am dissapoint!

I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them

Oh, there's always time for games! I just went a little more old school. I went to a casino to show my wife the evils of gambling (She's never been in one), and with the 10 free dollars the casino supplied, I won 635 dollars.
... yes. That certainly taught HER a lesson about the harsh realities of life.
I also played Halo at the bachelor party. I suspect my brother in law might be a bit of a geek. We did have totally manly NERF sword fights though. Which after doing that for a while, I think should be the new method of dealing with forum disagreements. Can't agree on the engineer?
Exchange real life addresses, drive over and beat each other half to death with foam weaponry. Engineer fans are allowed to use NERF guns as well, of course.
Don't forget, in GW1 you could get hit by meteors and walk away 2 seconds after that and 100 damage... Same with lightning, ... Quit trying to find logic behind the damage schemes. This is exactly what DF developers were talking about when discussing how far they could takr realism in games until making them dull and boring. Their game perhaps didn't turn out too well, but they're right. If you want damage to be logical, you can only stick to either bows/swords, only magic, or only guns, from a realistic point of view they'll never fit.
That being said, I'm going for Engineer probably. It looks fun, and a different way of playing than what i'm used to. Like a spirit spammer with mines and more AoE, will love it for world pvp.
Also, I'm guessing they'll deal signifcantly more damage but they'll have to craft their bullets etc. Sounds like a fun class to play then, at least you'll have something useful to craft.
You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up.

AKASlapHappy and me have already decided on a slapping contest to settle matters a few pages back, not sure which is more manly though. Slapping each other or beating each other with foam weaponry. They're both pretty high up there, just below wrestling with grizzly bears while drunk and naked.
And teaching females lessons? Don't be silly..... They're like dolphins. You think you're training them, but in reality they're training you....

Beating eachother with foam weaponry is so much more manly. Me and a couple of friends snuck in to a 'toys r us' store after being kicked out, for playing with their starwars costumes, in order to play with their foam weapons. Most epic moment of my life. Ended up tearing one of the swords up as I smashed it at my friends head. He was wearing a viking helmet^^
And, you nearly killed gobla! That dolphin article was a real killer! I'm still laughing

:O Dammit, It's my birthday today, WHY DIDN'T I ASK FOR THESE?!?!! Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck! WANT!
I'm not big on the 'fantasy' type games, having come from SWG, EVE, PotBS, and others. Now I see my WAR Engineer again? Adding a little cyber/steam punk flavor may bring a whole new crowd into GW2, and in the end isn't that a good thing?
I passed on GW as it was just another fantasy game, and understand lore has it's place in shaping a game and community, but i thought GW2 was some 200 years after GW, and looking at our own advancements in 200 years..
End result, for me. GW2 just moved from, another fantasy game, to I may try that.
SWTOR. Face it, in the Scooby Doo Mystery Solving Van of coolness, this game is Velma. In this current MMO climate it has about as much chance for survival as a group of inquisitive teenagers in a 1980s slasher flick. -Tardcore May, 2011
Nuthin says luvin like a heavy hitting rifle at long range, assorted grenades filled wit highly explosive goop as the enemy charges, and then finish em off wit a sweet point blank AOE spewing Flamethrower while yer trusty turret pops off whoever's still standing!!
GW2 Engineer - in the hands of someone wit good prior FPS MMO or real world combat experience will shine! Now dat some serious Crowd Control eh!
