Originally posted by lizardbones PC's are much more amenable to having content delivered over the interwebs. This is part of the reason why you are seeing 0 games in Gamestop. The other part is (if I am any indication) a 'computer' person is more likely to head over to Best Buy or someplace like that to buy a game. There are games, peripherals and big screen televisions to look at. A store isn't going to have stock for people who don't come in to their store.
I think PC gaming will be around for a good while yet.
* For indie developers, the PC is much easier to develop for. It's only the high end games that want to push the envelope that really have issues with system configuration. The indie market for the XBox360 and PS3 is virtually non-existent compared to the indie market for the PC. * People want to have control over the stuff they buy. Cell phone manufacturers are starting to get this and they are starting to ship their phones 'unlocked'. Console developers are not ready to do that yet. A PC gives the user as close to full control as you can get.
** edit ** I do think that eventually, the PC will go away. Sort of. It'll still be a computer, it'll just look different. Like your little smart phone will be your PC. They're nearly up there with most business PCs right now anyway. You'll just dock your phone and it'll display on your big screen instead of your hand held screen.
ummm pc will not go any were you cant repair a phone yourself you cant upgrade it. there alot of things you can do to pc then phones and consles.... i know i been builing computers over 10 years i dont see pc going any were. pc will always get better and faster then plain phones. plus its bigger it can handle alot of software and hardware work and pcs are use to make video games and people who do grachic stuff so nope pc ant dieing:P
My father built a console television and a quadraphonic stereo system from scratch. We used that television until the mid to late 70's. Television technology has changed to the point that it is close to impossible to build a television. The same thing will eventually happen to PC's.
It won't be eliminated. I'm building little mini-computers right now using things like the Arduino platform, but for 99.XX% of the population, that just isn't going to happen. The vast majority of people are not going to solder together some piece of cr@p when they can buy a smart phone sized computer and just plug it into their desktop.
** edit ** Especially when the cost of replacing the item is 10% of the cost of buying a new one.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
Actuallly, Smartphones and tablets are just tackling the tasks that PC was really overkill for. (ie. email, web browsing, movie watching)
They're not likely to every be platforms for serious work and gaming largely due to their interface issues. (a touchscreen keyboard is never going to be a good idea)
It's not even an age issues, even my 2 children agree with my insistance of smartphones having an actual keyboard to type on so we all have them.

PC is the ultimate gaming platform on the top of doing all the things you will never do on your console, iphone. ipad or Kindle. Preaching death of PC makes you to look as stupid as Pachter.

Those tasks that PCs are overkill for are pretty much all an average user does. Those that actually use the full potential of their PC is very small.
Ummm, I seem to remember hooking up a keyboard and mouse to my Dreamcast and playing games with them. It worked great - well, apart from the ergonomics of sitting in a sofa with those peripherals on the coffee table.
I think the first Xbox allowed for this sort of thing, too. I wouldn't know about current-gen consoles, don't own any.
On a different subject, as some posters have already pointed out I also think the lack of PC games on store shelves is mostly due to the rise of direct downloading.

I play games on PC and on console systems. For me a controller is much better then a keyboard/mouse. Why?
1. You move your character with a joystick. That is much easier then WASD or mouse and you have much better control over your character.
2. You look around with a joystick. The same argument as above. So with only using two thumbs you have very fine control moving your character and looking around. How many fingers do you need for that on keyboard/mouse?
3. Beside 2 joysticks you have 20 basic keys on a controller. You can have more if you are using combination of keys, like using SHIFT or CTRL. Using 20 keys on a keyboard (beside WASD) without looking is difficult as hell. On a controller you can very easy remember their locations because of the configuration of a controller.
Three more reasons why I prefer console systems over PC:
mostly correct except controllers don't suck. you really have to be... well to avoid banstick... "slow" to not get used to and use a controller effectively.
I don't think the PC is going anywhere. I can see it changing how it looks completely though. We are going from the ability to completely customize our computers however we want, to all in one monitor style PC's. Which in my opinion is very irritating. I went to bestbuy to try to find my girlfriend a desktop to play games with me on, and all they had were all in ones. I'm not about to buy an all in one with an integrated card for gaming. I can always build one myself, but I was honestly just looking at a store to see the options. So all in ones and tablets are going to be the new thing, and as long as people can still buy PC parts, then I doubt PC gaming or PC's in general will die out.

1. You can play on a big TV.
2. You can have great sound.
3. You can sit comfortably in a sofa.
i bet if i buy a better speakers and put it on my pc i make your big tv sound like weakling lol. sounds like to me you stuck on one thing and know nothing of hardware or building pcs or shopping for better speakers. those big screen tvs are for show i have 32 hd moniter and 1080 1090 HDMI and i see stuff just as good as your HD tv. so post made no sence. oh and you can use a controler on your pc two or you did not know that ether O_O. my brother plays games perfectly no keyboared and mouse so that made no sence maybe you dont play so good on pc games :P
Now it is true that the console makers really tried everything they could do to make everyone believe that PC gaming was dead, and almost turned it into a reality.
Then something called Farmville was born and you wanna bet there are some console makers a bit frantic now - can any of the consoles access Facebook easily, using a controller?
There is a market for all kinds of devices and the games that play on them. That market will continue to expand.
If I'm at a Doctor's office I will play something entirely different than I'd play at home - something not too involving that I can stop at any time.
On a plane I want something a bit more immersive as I need distractions from my real life situation where I'm pretending to be a sardine.
With the grandkids I want something where we all have a somewhat equal chance such as Mario Kart, but I also want to play with them in the same room so I can watch their joy as they win.
And when I have time all to myself, with no distractions, those precious few free hours - I want to be sitting at my computer losing myself in an MMO.
Really enjoyed the article Coyote and agree about the chopsticks.
Between tablets and consoles home PCs are already redundent for the casual domestic user, they just don't know it yet because the market is like a dinosaur waiting for fact to reach it's brain.
I would say in around 10 years it will be very unusual to see a PC in the average home.
People like smaller faster toys. Just like we don't see the once great big record stores anymore at the malls itunes took that away just like streaming video sites have taken away the big blockbuster stores. The Tablet computer if it continues to grow faster and more powerful which it will can be the doom of the big tower's that run our lean mean gaming machines.
Interesting article. What do you guys think of the progression of Internet-based services for eliminating the hardware requirements to run games efficienty and providing a more concrete standard for future game development (i.e. that nifty OnLive thing I heard about a while ago)? That would certainly see a resurgence in the PC, though of course it could help tablets as well.
This is one well written article. Made me chuckle a couple of times too. Almost made me believe the PC was on the fast lane to extinction. Everything is relative of course, but switchig to console just ain't gonna happen for me, ever.
Waiting for Guild Wars 2, and maybe SWTOR until that time...
Three more reasons why I prefer console systems over PC:
1. You can play on a big TV.
2. You can have great sound.
3. You can sit comfortably in a sofa.
Well, I don't know about your particular setup, but I find that in average living room conditions, a big TV nearly always end up taking up less of my field of view than your average 24" monitor and even a cheapish 24" monitor often delivers a better picture. What I'm trying to say is that a lot of people fall into the trap of thinking that the size of the screen is all that matters, when it reality it's a combination of size, distance and clarity. Oh, and let's not forget that you can hook up any PC to a TV these days, so that's really not much of an argument.
The same can be said about sound. Hook your PC up to a quality surround system and you can have great sound. Furthermore, you have a wide range of soundcards and applications to choose from to further enhance your audio experience or you can just plug in any headset and not bother your neighbours. All the choices are there. Again, not much of an argument.
As for sitting comfortably in the sofa... yeah... there's something to be said about chilling out with your legs up and just cracking some virtual skulls with your controller, I won't deny you that. But I don't find sitting in front of my PC uncomfortable. The thing is, all too often do I see people spend thousands of $$$ on a new sofa, then spend $50 on a cheap office chair that you'd never actually see in a real office, because its just that bad and might lead to either work environment complaints or even lawsuits when Mr. One Pound too Many sits in it and injures his back because it just crumbled underneath him. In short, get a nice chair that you can adjust in all sorts of ways and gives you the perfect support that you need... and combine it with a likewise desk... then you're good to go.
I'm a big ol' fluffy carewolf. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
It is amazing how the strongest points for the pc can also be it's weakest link for developers. Too complex to code for the pc. Devs like simple easy platforms to code for not something that is complex because when something is too complex that means that is alot of time wasted and as we all know, time is money. I love my pc but consoles are more developer friendly.
Quick, someone get this author some information from some stronger resources.
sure, you can play some 'forms' of games on cell phones. But it's limited gaming at best.
you can game on tablets... but look at the overall attach-rate of tablets vs laptops/desktops. It's an increbily SMALL percentage of the market and has been for 5+ years.
Consoles... are great if you can hack/mod them.... and turn them into something MORE LIKE A PC! Consoles are great for sports games, driving games, and such.
FPS games can be played on both... but are incredible craptastic on consoles. And the genre keeps getting watered down, dumbed down, and turned into simple 'jumbo-crayon' stylized games for the console.. and then, the dev's port it to the PC. See: Black Op's for an example. Not until the latest expansion have they added any maps worth a damn.
And then... RTS and MMO's - dominated by PC's. Are there some of each that can be played on console? Yes. But do they handle and play well? Not imho.
Again, unless I can hack the living hell out of a console and turn it into something more like a PC.. it's useless to me.
I used to think that the one advantage that consoles might have was security... lol. Help us PSN... you're our only hope!!!
Personally, I don't care much about what I'm playing on as long as it gives me the gaming experience I want. Right now, there are numerous things that consoles lack for me to even consider getting one, not to mention that the majority of games released on consoles have so little interest to me that I couldn't be bothered to download them even if the were free! I'm into MMOs, RTS, strategy games like Civilization and the Total War series, hardcore simulators, Indie and highly modable stuff like Minecraft, Oblivion and the X3 series. Shooters and what not bore me to death. I'm about as far away from the console demographics as possible.
But...
If they start delivering that type of content on consoles and allow me to do things like hooking up my HOTAS, rudder pedals, multiple monitors, G15 keyboard or the equivalent and my Razer Naga, which combined with my Z-board Fang can give me an insane number of button combinations without ever reaching for the keyboard or breaking my fingers trying to execute them... then I'll be glad to buy a console and cheering all the way home when leaving the store.
I'm a big ol' fluffy carewolf. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
PCs will not die as long as they are the standard business tool. Spreadsheets and word processing sucks on iphones and ipads (is there any console that has a spreadsheet program?). Gaming is a different story. The pc game market is declining. That is the major reason why Gamestop has few if any pc games. Yes, downloads have increased, but on the whole the market has declined. I for one am a die hard pc fan.
On a more serious note - one billion Chinese can't be wrong. Chopsticks beat forks. I have a Chinese wife and in-laws and they use chopsticks all the time. Their argument is that using chopsticks builds agility, and, after watching my wife pick up a single grain of rice with chopsticks, I tend to agree.
[Now that my wife has left the room I will say that none of my children or I use chopsticks at home. Yes - you can't teach those white devils new tricks :]
PC's as we know them will die, but consoles will not be the one that does it, it'll be Smartphones and Tablets that kill it. Graphene based 100ghz CPU's are just around the corner. MIT and a couple of other tech University's have all ready made working versions of these CPU's and we can expect to see them on the market in about two maybe three years. As I said in one of my blogs, you'll be able to hold in your hand your new PC, it'll come in the form of a smartphone or tablet and if you wish you'll just plug it into a port and use a keyboard, mouse and big screen to play your games on.
"In a few years, no one will be using or even owning a home computer."
Yeah that statement has been made by industry "experts" for over a dozen years now, and it's no less a fallacy now than it was then... as a 20+ year PC user and PC gamer, I am not at all worried. Will technology change and advance as time goes on? Of course, but the PC will be around in some form or another as a gaming platform for as long as there are gamers.
