Hah! I thought that was a fun read, actually. I don't think this will be the case though, as while mobile gaming is a huge market right now, it doesn't target hardcore gamers. The games are relatively repetitive because of memory and hardware capabilities and yes, while technology may change this, people are not going to play video games on a tiny hand-held screen when they're home and have a perfectly good desktop sitting in front of them.

    Sorry, but no.

Whether consoles will render computer gaming obsolete however, is a whole other discussion. It's very possible seeing as how most Windows games are being made for platforms either as well, or the Windows one coming only after the fact. However, computer capabilities still far outweigh console and piracy is rapidly becoming a gaming-wide problem rather than just a computer-wide one (it's easy to mod a ps3/xbox and the .cd files are all over torrent networks). There is also a huge amount of gamers that are exclusive to and adamantly for computer gaming. For those above reasons, I really don't see much if anything changing for many decades.

At least not until they have the technology to let me access the Matrix from my 3ds.

ps - I play computer action games (Vindictus, Dragon Nest, etc) with an xbox controller :P

Most of you are too young to know why VHS video cassettes won out over Betamax. It's very simple. The porn industry went with VHS. I'll agree with the author. PCs in the home won't disappear because of porn.

My PC is not going anywhere anytime soon.  Well at least until 3 things are done for consoles.

    1. Give me a keyboard and a mouse over that worthless controller.  I am willing to bet an avg Call of Duty player with a keyboard and mouse would kick the shit out of a professional gamer with a PS3 or Xbox360 controller in a 1v1 match.

    2. I will be gaming on my PC until games like the Total War collection can work and work well on consoles.  Has anyone played Civilization 4 on the consoles and then played it on the PC.   It is not even the same game, no depth like the PC version.

    3. Until I can run my console and watch TV which I currently do while playing on my PC, then my PC stays.  Watching a movie or show while playing on the PC is great.  When I play my PS3 or Xbox360, I cannot watch a movie at the same time unless I have 2 TVs in the same room which only happens during the NHL playoffs in my house.

Also, someone listed that their TV has better sound, picture and they can sit on their couch.  Yea and my PCs sound system is better or equal to the top of the line sound systems for TVs.  My two 24" widescreen monitors look as good as my 60" LCD TV when watching Movies or sports.   And How hard is it to get a wireless mouse and keyboard, hook your computer up to your TV and sit on your couch and play.

PCs are not going anywhere in the home and they will not be leaving the business world anytime soon.

    Sooner or Later

Actually it's the other way around, Consoles are PC's with ZERO handicaps, a modern PC has tons of them, for a start they need to be running an OS thats bloated and not designed for gaming, they then need all kinds of abstraction layers and drivers all over the place.

If some smart geek could write and OS that turns a HOME PC into nothing more than a console, playing what ever game is in the drive and running only the drivers and code needed to make it execute the player would see a massive jump in their PC's performance, even though their hardware didnt change.

Actually, its the other way around. There are any number of things that a PC can do which a console cant do. A console is specifically designed NOT to do things. Unless of course you are limiting the discussion to only gaming, which was not the claim made in the ops article, that "pcs would dissapear from homes". The very fact that consoles cant do many things is why PCs wont. In fact, PCs in homes have multiplied. They are in your gaming console, your phone, and your tv. And your car if its in your garage.

The hate for chopsticks is interesting. I get that it's not part of your culture; that doesn't make them suck. I don't think the PC is going anywhere,  nor are the consoles, the mouse and keyboarde or the gamepads. Wha I don't understand is why one has to "win" and beat the others down. They can exist side-by-side... they have been for years.

Wow alot of anger about this. In the wrighters defence, not that he can't defend himself. I don' t think it was a post about what will happen more of what he noticed. Don't get wrong i'm definitley on the side of all of you and am glad to see that there are more people that feel the way i do about consoles. I don't even own a console currently and the last one i did own eventually sat untouched for months at a time, till i pawned it for cash. I'm sure someone will reply to this in an even more angier/condesconding tone, but eh here goes. I think he meant this as an observation. Not to say that PC gaming or that the PC world will fall to way side, but i think  more of  a i hope it never comes to this and i agree. I say  there are alot of peple out there that don't know what there missing out on in playing games on PC's. I like to play some games with my M&K and others with my PC controller. I think it's come down to,"Whatever you can do i can do better", Speaking in  terms of the PC vs Console battle. I've looked at the specs of for say the Xbox 360 and PS3 , and they both have  PC parts. Infact are becomming more like a PC every year, but there not the same at all. They barely hold a candle to the customizing and hardware options of a PC. People who call themselves gamers or hardcore games that only play console games to me ( in my opinion) don't know what real gaming is. Yeah you went out and bought a machine that was prebuilt, and once it dies or the next version of consoles come out  it's time to put that old one up next to the  SNES, or SEGA console collectables. I hope PC gaming never dies and infact i don't think it is going to.With the way PC's and PC part prices drops are going, thanks too and if your smart you shop on Newegg, the PC is going no where fast. The world fan base is way to huge, and the people that  said something about it tanking or taking a back seat to consoles, where probably some console junky gamer wannabes, who's thumbs are the only digits that actually have cordination in there hand.

In the end i like this post some of the comments i found to be rather funny, but we are pc's and like it or not were not going anywhere.

tablets work perfectly fine for porn; in fact, they are even better.  They are portable porn.   Your argument is null and void

There is a lot of PC elitism going on in this thread. I don't own a console, but just because someone games on a console doesn't mean they aren't a hardcore gamer.

    DID SOMEBODY SAY PORN?

  • SulaaSulaa Member UncommonPosts: 1,329

Contrary to what many peoplle think , PC gaming is getting back on it's feet again.

Consoles are really popular in USA and Japan but apart of it not as much.

There is more PC gaming in Europe , very big raise is amount of pc sold in Russia and still in a few European counties There is still place for big growth in Central Asia , China , India and Latin America.

Even in Africa and Middle East PC compuiter are getting sold more.

So amount of PC worldwide is increasing alot ,and while for example in Russia you have big piracy at same time some games sell there hundred od thousands legitimate copies. (kinda contraddicts that piracy kill game sales...)

    No.

The power of the PC platform is simply too far ahead for other electronics to ever really catch up. Plus, they are too deeply integrated into how our society works.

At this point trying to claim that the PC is going to "die" is like trying to claim that Television, Bicycles, Refrigerators, or chairs are going to "die".

However, I would not be surprised if consoles "died", with tablets / smartphones on the rapid rise.

I can run N64, Playstation, SNES...and many other emulators on my phone (not to mention many games actually designed for Android, such as Asphalt HD), stream the video to my plasma screen, and use the phone as the controller. And as most of you probably know, you can use a Wii-mote to control Android games as well.

New console generations come out every few years....new phone generations come out every few months.

maybe then we PC gamers can finally stop suffering from horrible console ports, and PC gaming can go back to being complex and immersive image

I have to agree with the general sentiment of the author... anyone who believes the computer is going away is an idiot.  While the console is a stable platform, there are just some genres we cannot, CANNOT design a game for on a system with less then a dozen buttons per input device.  Most games can work like that but some can't.  Besides, can you type on a console or cellphone?  Can you run a graphic design program like Photoshop on a console?

Yes, the desktop PC will eventually be replaced.  The march of technological innovation makes it inevitable.  But its retirement will only come at a time when there is a suitable heir for the truly multifunctional device.  And I have yet to see one cross the horizon.

I don't get why you would think PC's are on the way out. A PC will always be more powerful than a console because it's just the way it is I guess. As soon as a console gets to market another more powerful videocard or processor  comes out.

Though to be fare if a decent mmo like Perpetuum or Jumpgate came out on a console that could play them well I would buy the console just for the ability to play that mmo. But everyone knows some more awsome mmo game would then come out that would make the consoles of the world freeze up, thus forcing my hand fork out cash for a computer system that could handle it.

That's why PC's are never leaveing and it has nothing to do with porn cause you can get that on a console in your cave too.

Buy the way I'm a controler man and love my flight sticks too. So get some decent flight stick games out there for me devs. JGE hopfully.

O and another thing, developing for computers has come a long way, to where it is easy enough to create a game, if you know what you are doing, that runs on to days 6+ core machines and not have to be some kind of gineus. Just make sure your mem leaks are fixed and it is easy to fit a game in 8 gigs of ram and 1 gig of vram. I mean we have beasts compared to comps just 6-7 years ago. It aint too hard to get a game to run on todays PC's.

I have to admit, I laughed when I read this article. Who even writes this story anymore?

Sure, the computer market is changing, it's certainly in a transitional state, but from all indicators it seems pretty obvious that there will be a market for casual computing, like iPads and other Tom Foolery, and the desktop equipment we're using now. Things are going to change drastically for both markets over the next fifty years or so, but this isn't a short term issue. Not to mention, even looking at the newest batch of consoles and the famed "one console future", everything as far as entertainment is concerned is moving in the direction of a screen that you stream data to. Personally, I know there's nothing to worry about, because the demand from PC gamers like ourselves will keep the market open to the computers we know and love. There are milions of us, after all.

I <3 silly posts like this. The "computer" isn't going anywhere although it may evolve.

Besides, all we are really talking about is the medium or device to be used. Computers will always exist in some form to support productivity, business, and gaming. Whether the primary tool is a tablet, "gaming console" or something else is relatively irrelevant to me as long as I have input options. Only allowing a touch screen is as cripling as only allowing a gamepad for broad use.

As an addition to what you said, I would think iphones (or any handheld electronic device) may sell more units for the sole fact that I see more people inadvertantly dropping/damaging them over a more pricey Macbook or desktop computer.  I can't tell you how many times I have heard "my phone went for a swim" or "I ran my phone over after it fell out of my pocket".

This is a topic that has been argued over here many a time.

Though  I would rather prefer PC gaming remain supreme the sad thing I think MMOs are the next genre to die in PC gaming.

Like the FPS before it as soon and voice chat in made to be the fabric of everygame and we get a new wave of consoles with even more processing and video power then 5 Ps3s we will see more and more developers making MMOs specifically for consoles.

    Do I like this? NO

Do I think people that think otherwise are being delusional and holding on out of sheer love for the gaming rigs? You bet.

    1. You move your character with a joystick. That is much easier then WASD or mouse and you have much better control over your character.

    2. You look around with a joystick. The same argument as above. So with only using two thumbs you have very fine control moving your character and looking around. How many fingers do you need for that on keyboard/mouse?

    3. Beside 2 joysticks you have 20 basic keys on a controller. You can have more if you are using combination of keys, like using SHIFT or CTRL. Using 20 keys on a keyboard (beside WASD) without looking is difficult as hell. On a controller you can very easy remember their locations because of the configuration of a controller.

Three more reasons why I prefer console systems over PC:

    1. You can play on a big TV.

    2. You can have great sound.

    3. You can sit comfortably in a sofa.

Controllers only work well for specific types of games. Games like RTS, 4x, and MMORPGs are horrendous to play on a controller, and work significantly better with a standard mouse + keyboard setup. Even FPS games can arguably go either way based on personal preference. However, keep in mind that you can buy gamepads for PC that work just like console controllers, which means that PC has more options than consoles do.

As per your 'three more reasons'...

You can do all of those same things with a PC. Most modern graphics cards can be hooked up to an HD TV, and you can easily hook up your PC sounds to stereo system. A lot of people have PC setups that work in their living room. It's not hard, it just takes a small bit of effort... which if it's too much for most console gamers... well... it's really telling of the crowd.
