During last weekend's PAX, MMORPG.com Managing Editor Bill Murphy managed to corner Bioware's James Ohlen and Gabe Amantangelo to talk about PvP in Star Wars: The Old Republic. They covered a wide range of topics with regard to PvP that you simply must not miss. Keep reading and then let us know what you think in the comments.
MMORPG: Warzones are the more structured form of PVP, so will you guys be doing anything with ranking systems, tournaments and the like? Will SW:TOR dig into the whole eSports side of things?
Gabe Amantangelo: Yeah, yeah, well we have our Valor Ranking System which is tied to titles and awards and all that good achievement stuff players want. But we are interested in ladders, spectator modes, and all that stuff. I mean, that’s kind of my job, and the PVP community to me is just as important as the raiders and role-players.

Sounds great.
Years ago I played TFC that had ladders and a thing called hltv built in where people could watch matches, it was great.
I really hope they get this right
so world pvp is a set area with pvp objectives. sounds like a battleground to me, just not instanced maybe. what about just being able to fight people. the actual name for this game should be Star Wars: The Old Republic playing Mini Games. seems like every single thing in there game has a mini game associated with it to earn tokens for loot. world pvp as a minigame really isnt world pvp imo. just my view on it, too bad bioware screwed this up for me at least, I think they could have done so much better than WOW but apparantly they dont think so.
I hate to be the one pointing a finger at it, but....
ladders when PvP gear is worst than PvR Raid gear ?
I still can't get my head around the fact that they don't have separate kinds of gear in the game, 10% better gear is still 10% better
"I am not a robot. I am a unicorn."
So if my attack and defensive value is now 110 instead of 100 thanks to PvP gear, while your atttack and defensive value is still only 100 because you do not have the PvP gear, you think that won't be significant between two equal PvP players? Granted, I can see the PvP players whining when they gets mashed anyways by someone with a higher degree of skill, but among equal players that 10% will be a pretty big factor.
"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"
Listen, it is pretty obvious that this game is trying to aim at the same demographic that wow. Now in WoW you have resillience, which is pretty much needed for PvP.
Now go on a WoW PvP forum and ask them how they feel about PvE items in PvP (which admitedly there are some that can be used at the cost of resillience)
"I am not a robot. I am a unicorn."
But we are interested in ladders, spectator modes, and all that stuff.
Am i reading that right, they either have or really want to have spectator modes, that sounds cool.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.
So they do have the Mythic guys working on PvP with them. Interesting.
And since you can't argue against my point, you try to deflect it. Nice try, but get back on the topic you started please. (Oh and btw, they haven't talked about hardly any of the mechanics of PvP, so how do you know "resilience" isn't a part of it?)
"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"
Nice but .... hmmff, mhhheh, herpfff ... world pvp or bust.
You may sticketh that hutball and those ladders where the sun doth not shineth. As long as I can attack and be attacked by other players out in the open I'm a happy pwny.
My brand new bloggity blog.
I don't think I understand... You dislike the fact that they are putting stuff to do in the game apart from "go zerg each other?"
I remember what WoW was like before battlegrounds. I zerged Tauren Mill many, many times with an army of Alliance by my side, and while it was fun for a few hours, it got tedious very fast. When battlegrounds came out the world PvP was all but dead. Why? Because having something to actually do is more fun than the endless zerg fest that world PvP was.
I do hope they give us the option for a straight out zerg-fest in world PvP, because that can be pretty fun sometimes. But actually having objectives and a purpose behind world PvP will make all the difference in the world and will increase PvP's value beyond blowing off steam for a few hours until you get incredibly bored.
Funny thing is, many PvPers agree that objectives in world PvP is far more fun, so "damned if you do, damned if you don't" on Bioware's part I guess.
Then just play on a pvp server. What they are describing are world pvp lakes on planets whether its a pve or pvp server it sounds like to me. If you want to pvp anywhere with no incentive then don't choose a pve server. Then you get the best of both worlds, directed world pvp lakes as just described, warzone pvp as previously described AND the open world pvp you want and is included in every mmo with a pvp server setup. What exactly are you not getting with that setup? You are complaining that they are giving you more than you want lol.
People have done gone crazy around here.
I don't understand with what you are disagree here.
They've stated that PvP gear is WORST than PvE raid gear (i made a typo up there and said PvR gear meant PvE, sry) by 10%
That does make a significant diference
"I am not a robot. I am a unicorn."
Some games in the past have made damage against players different than against mobs, I'm wondering if it's going to be that way here.
This is basically how I understood it to be as well. Like the PVP lakes in WAR (which are actually a lot of fun...best part of the game). I also agree that they are giving more to PVP folks than expected so I hope people see that.
It sounds to me that there will be several types of PvP. I can only see this as a good thing. I don't understand why people wouldn't see this a good thing. For me, the more options I have the better. It adds to the complexity of the game and replayability of the game IMO.
I self identify as a monkey.
From my undertanding of it you can pvp or pve in the seperate gear sets, but say if you pvp in pve gear you will be at a 10% disadvantage and vice versa.
In Bioware we trust!
10% difference which can be overcome with upgrade slots. Moreover it is fair because if you will enter dungeons with PVP gear, those with PVE gear will have 10% advantage. So it balances out. Since anyone who enters PVP with PVE gear will lose 10% advantage to PVP gear.
It won't balance out. You'll need two different sets of gear, one for pvp and one for pve to be effective. It will be the same set up as WoW. This is an mmo. The gear grind is one of the ways they plan to keep us playing.
I said it balances out becaue it works both ways. I don't do PVE dungeons so i will stick to PVP gear and i highly doubt that if i decide to enter dungeons with PVP gear, i will handicap rest of the team because my stats are 10% less effective. There are lot of other factors in dungeons and PVP like team play, strength of your team mates and their skills. Stats is not everything especially with 10% difference.
Too much ado about nothing.
Observer or spectator modes are great in other games. I think any serious pvp game shoud have this feature.
This is exactly what it means. PvE gear isn't better for PvP, its worse, for PvP specifically, but not so bad that PvP gear is an absolute necessity.
Sure you can buy PvP gear too, that might not have max PvP gear stats before you go into a PvP match, but its one of those things where the true PvPers will focus on getting the best PvP gear, and the PvEers who PvP will just be less experienced AND miss out on a 10% PvP ..."buff."
Quick question for the fans: Does this game play like a "standard" mmo in terms of zones and areas (like Everquest where each planet is a large shared zone with quest hubs and towns) or more like STO (where each planet is a small group / mission only instance dungeon and theres no real shared land) ?
p.s. not the game in general, just the zones / areas
"When people don't know much about something, they tend to fill in the blanks the way they want them to be filled in. They are almost always disappointed." - Will Wright
Another game ruined by lack-luster PvP.
I still can't believe people actually buy this instanced and staged pvp crap.
Sad.
Still better option than playing crappy sandbox.
Why does a game without kiddy-like pvp have to be a sandbox?
