I was one of those WoW players lol, I played WoW for over 6 years but also quit and tried many of the games that came out over the years...but I always came crawing back, the real reason for that is although some of those games had positives none had the polish and the lore to keep me hooked.
I can't say to much but I can tell you from my testing Sw:tor has all and more, in 6+ years of WoW I really found my replacement as WoW was to my Everquest 1 and AC1 before that.
You know I switched from EQ1->EQ2 to Wow and this feels similar. Top end successful studio releasing a MMO under a successful IP (thought SW is bigger now than warcraft was then). The mix of reviews feels exactly the same: some negative detractors with some of those simply disliking the "hype" and good portion of positive reviews. The Themepark haters are new, but back then the genre didn't have this many titles to split hares about either.
These preorder number are especially big. That may be a factor of how Bioware presented preorders and their rolling release day strategy but its impressive in any case.
Themepark haters are NOT new. Everquest was NOT a themepark, and when WoW & EQ2 came out, the "themepark" haters were born.

I am not sure how to reply. It looks like you are trying to correct me by using a premise that supports my statement.
I was simply comparing the release of WoW to the release of SWTOR. One situation that is "New" for the the SWTOR release environment (ie something that wasn't present when WoW was released) is that there are now a lot of Themepark haters. Which you verified by saying they weren't born until after WoW's release.
Expectations destroyed, end of the Mmorpg as a genre, threats of suicide (oh, please do! Human race needs some culling. Do you know there are 7 billions of us? Just yesterday it was 6, I remember 6th billion child a big deal!)
Lol. This made me want to +1 your post if that would've been possible
... are we really at 7 billion already?? Damn... we need more wars...
Poor planet earth...
Actually a weekly Darwin Award TV contest/gameshow would do it.
I can see the headline for it now "Try to be the most original in getting yourself killed, and you will be entered into our grand drawing at the end of the season".
You know a number of nitwits would be vying for first place each week. Now that would be what I would call reality TV.

Man 99% of early access will say they never seen the game as good as this. Just because it takes much more to understand is it good MMO or bad. SWTOR is pretty mainstream themepark MMORPG, so it's exactly what people want. At least at the first glance. So pre-orders won't drop drastically, if at all.
After my first 5 days in beta I was hooked as a 16 years old lad after sex with Megan Fox. And I'm an EVE and Darkfall freak...

gotta agree here. iw as teh same way when i played.... The game isnt for everyone, but it damn sur will be liked by alot.. my only scare is there progression on endgame... if they can keep the endgame on point, and add some extra stuff for players to do outside of combat thats engaging, well this will trully be a wow killer.

Coming from a sandbox player like yourself that means alot , this game seems to have all the right elements to grab some of those sandbox players and that a great thing, I myself came from being a hardcore sandboxer "Asherson's call 1" but thats not saying much in my case I loved WoW but that fact that a Eve/Darkfall player feels this way about Sw:tor means more then what people think.

From what I can say, endgame in Sw:tor will be a mix of World PvP(planet control war) and WoW type raiding, so far they have 2 raids (don't quote me on that) but that's still more then WoW had, they started with no raids, no battleground and only 14 dungeons, Sw:tor has more then WoW at launch.
Sw:tor launch:
15 dungeons ...1 more then WoW
2 Raids (100% sure of 1) ...WoW had none
3 battlegrounds...WoW had none
2 pvp planets so far that we know of...WoW had none, picture Daoc RvR
and a ton of support, lore and polish, we have ourselves a winner.
Has anyone ever told you guys that you get way to worked up about this game?
I think it's a no brained that TOR will sell a boatload of copies, and they will also be the 2nd largest mmo for some time.
It's clear that they are going to have more preorders than anyy mmo to date. So even if they follow a similar retention trend to other recent mmo's and lose the same percentage of people as say Rift or WAR, then they still have more subs than any of those games.
If that cannot be defined as a resounding success then how are we to ever expect "success" from the mmo industry. Does it take 10 million preorders and 100% retention while also picking up 10 million subs over the next year?
I just don't see how you cannot expect this game to be hugely successful. If people think this game will tank then what kind of crazy numbers are we looking for here?
Even IF it is down to 500k subs by this time next year (which I highly doubt) they are still turning profit. The game will continue and the people who are still there have a game that they enjoy playing.
People need to realize tha this game isn't WAR or AoC or Aion. Those games are still around and it's obvious to anyone that can add that TOR will do substantially better.

This is also more than Rift has at release as far as the PvP content. Rift still doesn't have any RvR zones and Trion hasn't even mentioned that, which lends to their subs going "Well, I THINK they could put a zone here, if they do this/this/this and maybe we'll get it in 1.9" lol. That's sad.
Plus Rift has a much more difficult time balancing PvP due to souls which constantly creates a FOTM club and the fact that they got the lead PvP guy from Warhammer (Gershowitz) who was in charge of the Brightwizard/Witch Elf/Warpriest laughadoos that were always in that game.
The PvP planets are huge from what I understand (Ilia?) and it's not set up as a zerg vs zerg type of gameplay with many points of contention.
Most recent games haven't been able to address the holes in their PvP as far as content so ToR having this diverse amount of it at launch will go a long way into keeping folks before they get bored.

Some folks are praying the game doesnt do well. There was a post the other day, which promptly was deleted, claiming that for the MMO industry to move forward this game must fail.
Talk about drama queen material.
Sandbox fans, and GW2 fans seem to be the most vocal complainers. Considering the sources, it doesnt surprise me. If TOR sales hit above 2M at launch, I doubt we see a AAA sandbox for another 5 to 10 yrs at the earliest. If TOR manages to hold a good amount of subs, I can see GW2 sales numbers suffering.
Is it any wonder these folks, that like those styles of games, cant STFU?

That's the new total, with 6 weeks left to go. 60,000 more preorders this week. Will that continue, are we looking at another 360,000 preorders before launch?
I'm guessing that there are quite a few waiting for a chance to try the game in beta, so I wouldn't be surprised if there was a big jump after the upcoming stress test.

I know, and that's from last week, this upcoming monday we should see a massive jump because all the beta testing going on.

2 million sales will easily be hit, and I think 3 million is still a definite possibility.

Themepark haters are NOT new. Everquest was NOT a themepark, and when WoW & EQ2 came out, the "themepark" haters were born.

For sure, digital downloads makeup around 40% of all gaming sales as of 2010, that being said SW:tor allready has over 1 million sold in the US alone.
