As the title says, what do you think the future holds for TERA. Will this game end up like RIFT for example, getting a decent amount of praise and still failing to hold up amongst the likes of WoW etc.
Or does this game have a bright future, if so why?
I'm asking as im hestitant to dive into it just like i did for RIFT after coming from WoW and finding the novelty wear thin after a few months of play...
Comments
Whats wrong with Rift? I never liked the game but as for as I know its been solid with a loyal fan base. Thats all you can ask for in a mmo. No mmo will get the millions of subs that WoW did. The mmo big boom has happened thanks to WoW but it cant happen again because its already happened.
TERA will hold for atleast a year or two because of its combat, and PvP because of that. After that no-one can say for sure at this time.
Currently good PvP gives games most longevity simply because it doesnt get old, unless its really unbalanced.
What do you mean by "fail"?
Fail as in "not having as many subs as WoW"? If so yes it will fail... but every single mmorpg will fail.
Explain yourself.
I think for me it was too similar to WoW. It had alot of the same conventions as WoW cept it built on them with RIFT's and zone events. I liked the idea but in the end it was novelty for the most part, didn't hold my attention as much as i would of liked.. The structured PvP was a step up from WoW, spent alot of time in that whilst i played, was good fun ill admit.
I'm lookin for the incentive to play tera untill guild wars 2 is released, but im unsure if Tera will have enough to keep my attention as WoW did. The whole carrot dangling formula worked well as much as i despised it..
Something that is well designed and addictive at it's core is essentially what im looking for.
haha, i know nothing will ever get to the pinnacle of WoW's subscription base.
I meant fail in a broad definition as in the game will lose alot of its player base after 6 months and become f2p. I know LOTRO felt a similar fate, no? Hopefully that clear things up.
From my general experiences with Tera through the 4 Betas I got to do. I feel that the game has made improvements in alot of the places people were concered about when it first Beta'd a month back. Graphics are pretty good so the game is appealing to the eye. The combat is refreshing enough to keep people playing because of that for a good while.
I however wasn't able to get to the fabled Level 20. To begin to break past some of the grindy quest givers that are in the starting areas. The one BAM encounter I got to have from the run through was good.
I don't think this game was/is setup to fail; shit I could say another game was more set up to fail that how Tera is panning out. I'm not subscribed to the game however so I can't give all the intimate details.
TL;DR No I don't believe it's setup to fail.. Another game was though; so I see your concern.
PM before you report at least or you could just block.
What's the definition of fail then?
The number of servers?
Tera started with 10 servers in NA. They added 1 so there are 11 servers.
By the end of the year having 15 server will be a success? 5 servers a fail?
I think that with all the 100s of f2p mmo's out, and so many subscription based games available, that there will never be a large holding of so many players as WoW has/had. If you look at this list courtesy of mmohut.com you will see how many games are available f2p.
At the time of WoWs launch, if I got bored of it I had very few choices so I stuck with it. Basically the mmorpg population can spread out now because of such a large choice in mmos. I'm going to play Tera until I get bored of it like any other game and like so many others of you, get bored and move on. It's just the way it is.
So, to the OP my answer is yes, it will fail, but not because of it's design/mechanics or game play, we will just get bored and move on because there is always something else.
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
The Korean version (from what I've read) didn't do so hot, and yet it is still going and still has a subscription. If it lasts at least 6 months with a sub, I guess we can say it is a smashing success using your definition.
Here's how this works...
Play a game that fun for you. If you have friends, they will consider playing it too because you are playing it.
When it stops being fun, don't play it.
WoW got big for really only a few reasons.
Stuff to do and places to explore.
Leveling speed was faster than the games out at that point, but slow enough for your friends to come join you and eventually play next to you.
They created a world (through lore, mindset, quest objectives, etc) where the factions hated each other and faction pride mattered and fostered that mindset in the players. It's drama, and people love drama.
DAOC capitalized on similar drama, as does EVE.
Tera looks to be attempting to do so as well, but it's all about the implementation. Tera appears to be a very good game ( I am loving it, but it's new), but time will tell on how well it will do as that will get determined by how well they can get the community to take a hand in what ever drama they have scripted.
PvP for drama is a tried and true tactic but can often backfire due to imbalances, glitches or cheats that go unresolved. En Masse has shown themselves to be a fairly classy company so we'll see how it all plays out.
Will it be as big as WoW ?
Doubtful, because the MMO market now is saturated. I don't expect to see another WoW until after the market has died down a great deal.
Tera will do pretty well in the west. However, the game does lack exploration and adventure. It is deep into the themepark territory. There is literally nothing else to do besides combat and playing the AH. PvP will the games saving grace.
Also, after playing a few hours last night with most of the chat being filled with Murloc talk, just general trash, or about WoW. I kind of fear for the community.
BOOYAKA!
BOOYAKA!
Only at launch because they launched too early with a imcompletely game, lvl 50 cap and only 2 dungeons. Ofc by now the cap is 60 and there is like 7 or so dungeons at end game. And it is rankedl iek 5th most played mmorpgs in korean.
I feel the game is quite similar to Rift, except that Tera has far superior combat which creates a much more entertaining leveling process.
I have no interest in returning to Rift because the combat is too similar to WoW or LOTRO and I find those games to be extra-ordinarily boring to play.
I may not stay subbed to Tera for an endless amount of time, but I do see enjoying new content as its released with another month or so of game time.
The combat is just too damn entertaning.
It have 11 servers, and just 2 of them are ¨heavy¨ at primetime, and the game is just like a week old. Wait till the end of the free month to see how many people is still playing, from what i saw, the game still doesnt have active or ingame lots of endgame features and TSW is coming next month.
What endgame features are missing? Level 60 dungeons are in, Nexus events are in, factions are in.
I'm not sure what might be missing.
Just not worth my time anymore.
There is nothign wrong with rift as far as it being an ok game. Not really enough to hold my attention but the invasions were nice.
Games DON"T have to hold up against wow. Don't. Don't.
As long as they can pay their bills and make enough of a profit to continue then it's fine.

You do know they measure server population not by how many people are on but by how many character are created on each server. So there is no way to tell what the current server population is. and Seriously no end game? we got like 5 end game dungeon and add 5 more for the hard mode veriosn thats 10 dungeon along with nexus, pvp, and the political system.
5 dungeons at endgame. And no battlegrounds.
Battlegrounds and Raids for example.
Pretty standard endgame.
No point in hinding the endgame weakness.
Jesus Christ, so many people these days asking you to "explain yourself" when you talk about a game failing or something similar. You know exactly what he meant by 'fail', there's no need to look so deeply into it.
There is no general definition of "fail".
Some think "not having as many subs as WoW is fail", others "under 1 M subscription is fail", "server merges are fail", "going f2p is fail"....
People have different opinions.
If the game is good people will play it. The combat is normal, not as strategic as other games and lacks a ton features. Bottom line it's pretty standard.
Reason why mmos dont have players as wow because they are ALL bad. All of em are busy upgrading the texture and not the quality of the game. I also dont get why ppl base a good pvp with the feature (WvW,WvWvW,RvR,etc) but not taking any consideration of the combat??
As far as I'm concerned, when a game "fails" it fails.
It can't bring in enough money to make it profitable and it closes down.
Fails.
Or, we can take it as some do which is "it doesn't come close to wow".
Which I think is ridiculous.
Or, that it doesn't do what it claims to do.

The combat is primarily strategic.

Not even close.... Combat is 'Normal'?? Really?
That statement alone makes me think you didn't even download the game, are you sure you're not talking about GW2 or something?
As far as 'lacks a ton of features', yes TERA doesn't have a damage meter etc.
Don't take me as a rabid fan boy of TERA since the jury is still out as far as I'm concerned...but there's nothing 'standard' or 'normal' about combat in TERA in relation to other MMOs.
