It works for me, but please continue with the bashing. We could rip every game apart and say none of them are innovative. The amount of hate TSW is generating just tells me that they are doing it right. Well done Funcom, well done.
Bashing? Really? Look at my previous posts in this thread. I like TSW, I own it. I have play over 40 hours since it released. I think its fun. Something doesn't need to be innovative to be worth buying. Torchlight was an excellent game imo, but it had 0 innovation (unless you count the fishing part innovation, which i dont). Battlefield 3 is an excellent game, but it isnt innovative.
TSW is an excellent game, but it has flaws and it is not very innovative. This is not a bash...this is me not being a fanboy. I don't have to like every minute aspect of the game, and I have never like every minute aspect of any game. So don't get so defensive about things that dont really matter in the "is this game worth buying" scope, because there are plenty of games that are crazy innovative and crazy suck ass.
Go back to pg12 and see who I quoted. I will give you a hint, it wasn't you.

See the post I quoted below. See the name of the person who posted it. I don't see yours......stop trying to pick a fight.
Can you name me 1 innovate feature in any mmorpg released this year then? You made your point about older games and mmo.
SWTOR's storyline focus would be seen by most people as innovative. Certainly I'd never seen anything that strong in an MMO.
GW2's DE system is highly innovative.
Tera's combat seemed innovative enough.
But that doesn't make any of those games good and it doesn't mean those innovations are particularly good ideas:
- SWTORs storyline whilst innovative had some very big downsides... the innovation sucked the life out of the game.
- GW2s DEs are fun, but people are unsure about the long-term attraction of such a system, and social dynamics.
- Tera's combat looked great, but it seems a lot of people had issues with it, and a lot of focus on combat - that maybe should have been applied elsewhere...
-> some of the best MMOs were not very innovative. Some of the worst MMOs were very innovative. (as someone mentioned - Tabula Rasa was very innovative...)
But none of those features are innovative either then.
- SWTOR's story is just the BW way of doing storytelling forced on an mmo setting. And other mmorpg have had story and cutscenes before.
- GW2's DE are an evolution of PQ system. They basically removed the quest giver and chanied some stuff together. Hell, Rift's did the branching open world event thing first.
- Action combat is everything but new mmos.
See, if there's no new stuff in TSW, there really isn't anything new in mmo. PS2 isn't. AA isn't. Nothing.
I think you are finally coming to the realization that there is nothing innovative about TSW.
It would be nice if you, instead of asking about other games, listed an innovative feature in TSW. Then maybe we could actually discuss something instead of just generalizing and saying the game is innovative for no reason. Or perhaps because it's new, people feel like it's innovative. I don't know. But I'd either like to hear an innovative feature or I'd like to move on and admit this game takes from other games and tries to make them great in their own way.
Sorry, there is nothing innovative about the game. I really like it, but it doesn't bring anything new to the table. It just takes some features already present in other games and puts a new spin on them. And with some of the features, they don't do a better job than other games. Other features, however, are done very well and it is those features that set it apart. For example, the storyline and acting/script are very well done. However, combat and character customization looks a lot like Rift, with respect to mixing abilities and traits.
Not much new in the game, but it's still fun.
If taking aspects of something already present somewhere else and putting a new spin on them is not innovative, then the following are NOT innovative:
Jazz
Rock and Roll
The Beatles
Led Zeppelin
Picasso
Gasoline engines
Alternate Current electricity (AC vs. DC)
The U.S. Constitution
I'm not sure innnovative is the word you were looking for, because it is by its very definition what you claim it isn't. It is true that nothing they have done has been completely 'new'. But 'new' and 'innovative' aren't exactly the same.
in·no·vate/?in??v?t/
Verb:
Make changes in something established, by introducing NEW methods, ideas, or products.
Introduce something NEW, esp. a product.
Actually innovate does mean NEW, they are synonyms. For a feature IN a process (MMO game is the process) to be innovative, it needs to be NEW. I havent heard one thing from TSW that isnt recycled from previous games and extremely similar to those recycled things. I have play for over 40 hours, too, and still havent found something "Innovative."
Make changes in something established, by introducing NEW methods, ideas, or products.
It works for me, but please continue with the bashing. We could rip every game apart and say none of them are innovative. The amount of hate TSW is generating just tells me that they are doing it right. Well done Funcom, well done.
There.....you said "bashing" in that comment of yours, not in the one you quoted....

It is not the best mmorpg of the year, but it is the most innovative daredevil game of the 2012, which will pave way for future mmorpg. IMO. In fact archeage has similiar skill system that tsw has.
The days of spec into pure healing, tanking, or dps is gone. HYbrid i where its at. Freeedom to choose how you play is the new hotness.
I dont really think its that innovative tbh. I hope that the mmorpg's of 2013 learn from the releases in 2012 and get it right.
I don't belittle TSW. I criticize it. The fact that you feel the need to belittle GW2 in return just weakens your position. We're discussing TSW, not GW2, stick to the subject or don't bother.
Yeah only you are the critic here rest of just belittle GW2. Ok...
I feel the need to bring GW2 in discussion because it is a next big thing and also a themepak. I am still sticking to subject. If TSW is themepark just like WOW...is GW2 too a themepark like WOW? a very valid question which you have been avoiding for obvious reasons.
Exaplain this to me. I say "TSW is not innovative." You say "Neither is GW2." How does the fact that GW2 is not innovative change anything about TSW? We're discussing TSW here and GW2 is irrelevent to this discussion. GW2 has it's own forums on this site, you're welcome to go there and discuss it.

GW2 has elves. =/= Innovative.
So anyway, if you compare how innovative TSW is to GW2, I would have to say GW2 is more innovative. Just based on the quest delivery system if nothing else. There is nothing that TSW really does that makes me think innovative. The freedom of skills has been done before in several different mmorpg's, just to list a few, Rift and Eve. Although rift is still stuck within a certain paradigm its too simmilar to TSW as far as the skill gimmick system.
I dunno....getting a blow job on one of the first cut scenes for the Dragon faction is pretty innovative!
Funcom blew it, pun intended. Thats one thing they screwed up in AOC, they promissed a more grown up mmo. Im tired of playing with Johnny and Suzy snott ragg. Thats one thing that their doing right this time is not cowing to the parents.

You can't find a professional review of the game anywhere on the internet that doesn't use the words 'original' 'fresh' 'highly innovative' 'completely different' or 'taking bolds steps into uncharted territory' or things like that.
Everybody who's job it is to explain to other people whether a game is good or bad or why seems to agree that The Secret World is highly original, innovative, and is doing a bunch of things that haven't been seen in an MMO before. So do, apparently, the vast majority of people who have actually played it.
There's no point in arguing with no-nothings that say "Der other games let you choose skills to hotbar derr' or 'it reminds me of guild wards hurrrr'.
Besides, the thread title says most innovative MMO OF THE YEAR. Who gives a crap what you think about Eve Online or the original Guild Wars.

15 pages of explaining it. feel free to read them. If your suggesting that the game doesnt do anything differently and nothing is new with this game...than perhaps you just dont want to know.
Ele/ shotgun actives: (My actives are subject to change based on content I'm doing)
Ignition - Resource builder for both weapons (Strike)
Flame strike- Consumer which consumes only 2 resources (Strike)
Short fuse - Group buff 15% increase in damage for 10 seconds
Raging bullet - Consumer, consumes 5 resources and has a close range exploit (Strike)
Point Blank - no resources required, 30 sec cd, 1 second cast time, close range exploit, heavy damage, elite active ability
Flak Jacket - no resources required, instant cast 1, 60 second cd, group buff reduces damage by 15% for 5 seconds
Smart bomb - no resources required instant cast 60 sec cd, 60 sec duration until detonated, damage and purges 2 beneficial effects from target.
Passives: (this is where it get's interesting)
Lethality - (Assult Rfile) w/e you hit, you gain a single stack of a beneficial effect that increases damage dealt by 1%, stacks up to 10 times, lasts 10 seconds.
Punisher - (Shotgun) Weakened state Debilitated, reduces damage caused by the target by 1% per stack can stack up to 10 times, lasts ten seconds.
Wrecking crew - (Hammer) Increases crit power of Strike abilities by 20%
Violent Strikes - (Elemental) Increase crit chance of Strike abilities by 7.5%
Live Wire - (Elemental) Creates a counter on crit, when counter reaches 4, extra hit for x amount of damage, currently at my gear level this extra hit is for 975 magical damage. Elite passive ability, counter doesn't go away until death.
Social Dynamo - (Elemental) Group buff, w/e critically hit with Strike ability, group gains benefical effect of crit rate increase 30 per stack, can stack up to 5 times, lasts 8 seconds.
Final Fuse - Increases damage buff of Short Fuse for group members to 25%.
In a nutshell I have used passives from 4 different weapons, this would be like using rogue abilities, while being a cleric.
The synergy of my abilites are based on setting a state of weakened, Strike, crit and close ranged exploits, as well as group buffs and a purge, in ONE build. Keep in mind it's a numbers vs numbers game, when it comes to stats and not randoms.
The synergy in decks is where the innovation part comes into play. Another example of innovation is the game is designed in java so devs can add things like quests and events on the fly. I have personally seen little item quests appear in an area they weren't in previously. There are quest mob mechanics in this game that are literally mind blowing, you do have to think to fight some trash mobs, in open world. (NO spoilers)
It has been hinted by Ragnar that there is 7 years worth of content planned, there is 10 years worth of research that will find it's way into the game. There is a reason why the devs are so giddy about their baby, it's a good one. Are there bugs yes, are they in the process of getting fixxed yes.
Does TSW take some things from other mmos, yes, do they have innovative features, yes. Is TSW like a WoW clone, hell no. Will TSW appeal to everyone, no probably not, based on the fact that the game was designed to make you face your failures and hold you accountable for them, the penalty for failure is a little on the harsh side, and some people just don't like that.
But that's ok too, there are many games to choose from that will suit the different tastes. Personal perference isn't a bad thing, that means GW2 is good for some people, TSW is good for some, WoW, Rift, SWTOR, ect.
Now kiddies put the GW2 and TSW debate to rest, not everything will appeal to everyone.
Hah..ha ha... wait. Secret world doesn't have the 'healing, dps, tank' spec? I really hope this is a sarcastic thread.
If you have done ANY of the dungeons, you will know that they are based around this mechanic, and that all groups spend most of their time on finding a tank & healer, and then filling in the last 3 slots w/ dps or offheals.
If you look at PvP, you even QUE as a dps (high-powered weaponry), healer (combat medic), or tank (heavy armored).
Is TSW innovative? Yes it is. But combat is not where I would stick that label. The biggest things that TSW innovate on are the atmosphere, and the investigation missions. I guess you could throw in the crafting system, because it is different, but it's kind of a very small splash in that area; not to mention that many games have their own crafting system that differs from other games.
In terms of the skill system, TSW does put their own spin on it, but to say that TSW came up w/ that type of combat on their own, is akin to the people who say that WoW was the first MMO. Games like Guild Wars 1, Spellborn, Wizard 101, all have deck based combat systems. The unlock progression is different, but they are also much older games. In some regards TSW is a step backwards from these games, in that it takes the customization aspects these games had, and strips out most of the unique mechanics that made such customization fun to begin with.
If we're talking about story, or atmosphere. I'd 100% agree. But from a mechanics standpoint, it's just hard to take these kinds of statements seriously. And games are usually judged off their mechanics primarily.

I read them and there wasn't a single innovative thing mentioned. Here is the summary and then some example MMOs or games that did it before, not all games included. Innovation means taking something new or invented to market. So what is new? Just state 1 innovative thing, please.
No holy trinity - *Spoiler* it requires holy trinity to do PvE, I think everquest came up with it.
Can make a gimp hybrid spec - can make gimp hybrid specs in world of warcraft. Paladins in WoW can heal, tank, or DPS or be poor at multiple things.
Can look different than your gear - everquest 2 had an apearance tab.
Story driven - SWTOR says hello
Theme park - WoW
Two weapon combos at a time - GW1, DnDO duel spec.
Investigation mentions- everquest's epic quests required so much time and research and I still wasn't sure what I was supposed to do half the time. http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?quest=756 had to google tons of stuff there, the attunement quests where almost as confusing.
Modern setting - Matrix online, hellgate london.
Gear levels - WoW defined item level but all MMOs had it to some degree. item level helps balance, everquest had some very out of whack items like caster pants with more AC than a pure tank.
PvP - been done before plenty of times, same with the faction imbalance.
crafting - is only 1 crafting tradeskill and is like mine craft but really more like world of warcraft enchanting
Stealth missions - we have been doing them for years - WoW had rogues ninja running for the barman shanker since day 1.
My personal opinion of the game, it was designed as a retirement home for old school, hard core, mmo gamers. Those of us who have been craving the challenges and the sense of accomplisment we used to get from the old school mmos. These are the type of people that will get the most out of the game.
New to mmo types, will find it difficult, it may scare some off, others who are a little more curious, will be welcomed by a very friendly, mature community (you know the way old school communities used to be). The WoW type gamers, may not find it to their liking much as, progression is a little slow, easy mode is far and few in between. If it's one thing funcom is known for is hard mode is hard.

Some things they have in common, like dropping the skinner box, somethings they don't.
Gw2 has the better pvp
Tsw has the better pve
However both beat your "traditional" wow clone games like swtor/ rift/ lotro/ eq2 and wow itself in both pve and pvp.

innovative feature:
what other mmo allows playable access to all world content as a newbie?
thats one of the features, TSW proclaims to have (tho I dont know if they accomplished that)

15 pages of explaining it. feel free to read them. If your suggesting that the game doesnt do anything differently and nothing is new with this game...than perhaps you just dont want to know.
It would seem alot of people are confused by how the skill wheel works, by stating its like Rift's. This is untrue.
Let's begin with a build I use in groups currently:
http://thesecretsandbox.com/Deck?abilities=,164,168,177,179,542,561,571,186,255,298,543,553,564,572
