I enjoy MMOs much more now that I have so many to choose from without needing to invest money to play them all. A couple years ago, if I was feeling a little bored with the game I was playing, my only choice was to take a break (and maybe still keep my sub going) or jump into yet another MMO feeling as if I had to play constantly to justify the box + sub fee. Now, I have a couple games that I spend money regularly on and a few that I play tourist in, visiting from time to time. So when I need my regular fix of action combat and general badassery, I'll play DCUO. When pew-pew is the order of the day, I'll jump to STO. And when I want to go back to my comfortable quest-grinder mainstays, I'll hit Rift. Being free from needing to sub to all of the games I play means I can get all the aspects of MMO gaming that I enjoy without waiting around for The Perfect Game to come along and fulfill all my wants.
This is so sad to see so many embracing the death of MMO's.
Since when are MMO"s supposed to be played for such a short period of time? What makes MMO's so great for me is their long term commitment. Building my character over years and seeing them evolve while tthe games release enough interesting content for long term commitment. Now it seems MMO's are going down the path of a single player experience with short term commitment and onto the next. While the average COD player would embrace this, long time MMO'er's will likely end up abandoning MMO's completely. Jumping MMO"s to me just equates to a huge waste of time.
MMOs are meant to be played long term not short term entertainment. Next thing we will see is an ending cinematic then credits start rolling.
How can embracing this be good for the genre? Can't you all see where this will lead? Crappy shallow, one trick pony games.
Well thank god for Asian imports as it seems they may be our last hope for true MMO's because NA based MMO's have turned into nothing but cash grab/shallow experiences.
I don't have that problem per say some of the games I play went F2P after being sub only so I go back to them however some are not very well made to handle the F2P crowd to level as fast not from level 1 mind you but from like level 70 -85. Right now I'm talking about LOTRO they are stuck in the past with their business model and need to update alot of people are talking about the need to update. They had all this money come in from the sales of their last expansion didn't improve a thing. No armor sets to give bonuses or grow with the toons to get them to level 85 faster for the purpose of preparing for U11.
They did finally add xp when gathering but that's so low it's horrible.
I have mid level toons on other games I'm waiting to be F2P like WoW and Rift (what used to be max level last expansions) but not going to do anything with them until they release them and hope they have the good sense to make their F2P/Freemium models way better then SOE or SWTOR ever did.
I'm basically waiting. Couple other titles are in beta so I'm waiting on official launch to finish out my toons on those however those don't have the xp problems of the earlier games, they just level as fast as what you experienced in GW2.

Oh man, I remember when I was grinding two weeks straight, 8 hours a day in lineage 2 trying to level up ONCE, while competing for my hunting spot, guild warring and castle seiging. So much time and energy was put into my character which made it so much more rewarding when stuff happened in the world. I miss those days and still wait for an MMO to be like that.
no need to make it more than what it is, and act like it is something worth giving a name to. playing a variety of video games does not need a slang term.
Anything that's F2P, i can't stay invested for more than a week (and i've tried them all, the ones on the 'recommended list', like tera etc.)...
I effing hope Wildstar will pop a sub-fee, so i can finally invest! If it goes B2P + cash shop or F2P winshop, i don't see myself enjoying it for more than a few weeks or untill i reach the level cap.
So what i am saying is that anyone else having this problem where they are finding it harder and harder to stick to one MMO? not because you are not enjoying it but because you have too many MMOS to choose and play from?
I'm having that same experience, but I wouldn't describe it as a problem. I'm enjoying it.

In some ways this actually broadens my ability to play the games I want. With subscription MMOs I was always sort of obligated to play the one I was subscribed to and not spend time in others. Although I suppose I'm still doing that with a WOW subscription, I'm back dabbling in SWTOR and GW2 recently and if either of those had been full subscription games I would've stayed away most likely.
It's overall a good thing. When players are able to freely play whatever game they want without being locked into a subscription, then the best games will end up having more players.
Now all someone needs to do is release a game with better grouping gameplay than WOW. At some point someone will have to do it purely by random chance, right?
These two posts sum it up for me. I'm enjoying it and I'm starting to play the stuff I really want to.
It's been a weird transition for me because for so many years I've been conditioned to play because I'm paying. Now I'm finally starting to focus on stuff I want to do.
I'm with you guys on this as well. Choices are great when it comes to games. Save the "obligations" for the real world. Games are meant to be fun, not a second job. However, ultimately it IS up to you if you choose to settle down with one game or not. If anything, embrace having so many choices instead of being forced with one thing thing that is hum drum.
MMOs are meant to be played long term not short term entertainment.
if you say so.
but something tells me that this is just opinion that you feel is right based on the 'long-term' commitments that some of the games used to offer in order to accomplish 'certain' goals. but not everything about those games encouraged long term, other than a few aspects that they implement because they want your money the next month of the pyramid scheme sub-fee cycle. this is not a quality worth praising... unless you are on the receiving end of all the $.
so what does that amount to?
you being the minority, that actually wants to grind away for hours for virtual gratification, while others are just trying to have fun after a long day of work.
personally, and off-topic, i think everything about mmo's is stale, stagnant, and borderline robbery. but that does not make me all of the sudden pretend that older games were so much better than the ones now. MMO's still have shitty mechanics and little to no point of EVER playing them unless the social aspect is what you want and nothing more. combat is terrible. RP elements are lacking compared to TES games. customization flip flops every game.
to make it laughable, we have games that are F2P like PoE that offer deeper customization and a better time than most MMOs, past and present (the latter of course is opinion).
but back to your comment... No, you are wrong. MMOs are made to be played however long it takes for the company to get your money. telling yourself any different is not only foolish, but childish.

I think the vocal majority here is indeed the minority. Given the choice, I think many would prefer a game they can play long term assuming it is engaging enough to support it rather than having to jump to a new one every two months because it is lacking.
So instead of hoping for a deep game to be released that can keep you engaged long term, you'll just take a bunch of shallow crappy ones and just play them all?
To me, it is just console based or FPS players coming in and changing the entire genre to their play style and lack of loyalty. What is even worse is that there are ton of stand alone games which do this already so why does the entire MMO industry need to be dumbed down for players like you? So players like me who prefer a deep long term games are left with nothing and the MMO's that are left continue to fail because players like you have no loyalty or commitment to begin with.

This resonates with me a lot. I'm really starting to figure out what I like and what I don't like. I do want to pay a sub to a game, or at least find a game that I want to invest in. I'm not sure why I feel this way, but I want to play one game for a long time. Maybe switch genres and play a different game like Civ, Sim City, maybe a few sports games here and there, yet always return to that one rpg that I love.
I am relatively new to the genre I'm seeing that now. My earlier experiences with AC and PS were short and sweet until life happened, yet now with more time... and a better understanding of the landscape, I will be searching for "the one". Even if it isn't out there, I will keep searching, and maybe find one that's awesome for me.
Anyways, thanks for this post. Opened my eyes some.

i'm not playing ANY of them, because the games are really just that bad. all of them. past and present. if i ever enjoyed a MMO, is was not because they made an amazing game, but because my wife was playing with me and we love fantasy settings.
nothing is being dumbed down for people like me. I'm not playing ANY of them. so please explain that one.
and no i won't take a bunch of shallow crappy games over a good one. i WON'T play them at all. I have games to play that are fun and play them when it seems the fun thing to do. to be honest, i have more games to play right now than i have time to dedicate to them, and none of them are MMO's atm.
P.S.- i have loyalty and commitment to my loved ones, not video game companies that just want my money. if a company makes a game i find fun, i pay them for it. simple, yeah? but go ahead and enjoy being so bitter about your entertainment. just seems odd to me and somewhat of a contradiction to be so disgruntled about your chosen ENTERTAINMENT. you act as if there is nothing else in the world to entertain you except for a few shitty, outdated, pyramid-scheme game mechanics. i really feel sorry for you.

That makes no sense.
If I like a game why would I leave it for a game that I may not enjoy to the same level.?So based on what you point out, "if it's free, I must play", so being free > game quality?! Last time I checked making a game free doesn't make it any better or feature rich. Some of you people just need to get a damn job so the daunting $15/mo doesn't make your entire world crumble. Personally, I would pay $50/mo for a game I find worthy of my time, wait... I already am. Unfortunately that is the price I was forced to pay to overcome the issue I have with MMO's these days but it is worth every penny for a quality MMO.
Sorry state this country is in, give me everything for free and with no effort or commitment of course the gaming industry will follow suit.
And P.S., well duh is a hobby and I am definitely not bitter. I just feel sorry for players like you ignorant to what MMO's once were or what they could be. Just another sheep in the flock.
I like how the same guy who just stated that he would gladly pay 50$ a month for 1 game just called people sheep for choosing to spend their time doing what they want.
no game is worth that and i have had a job since highschool, many, many, foggy years ago.

i don't like cash shops too much either though, but the days of buying a game once and owning it is almost gone in the world of Fantasy RPG's. (thank you bethesda for TES)

sure, there are plenty of things that i'm not happy about in life, but i like who i am and would not trade my life for another in fear that i would lose part of what defines me.
but for as grumpy as i am, i just use video games as a source of relaxation and joy, not self-rallied crusading.

I'm actually not a game hopper. I only play one RPG at a time. And "searching" for the game, is by being on forums related to the genre, checking out YouTube videos about games, reading articles and beta testing to see what I'm drawn too.
It's only a problem if you view it as one. I like jumping from game to game depending on my interests at the time, and F2P offers the ability to do that. I gave up on "dedicating" myself to an MMO a long time ago, so I play them for fun. I'm not looking for a game to sink years of my life into. I just go play whatever seems the most fun at the time.

There is no real accomplishment in video games anyway .. they are all illusion created by the devs.
And real purpose .. there is always one real purpose .. to be entertained, and that happens with every game i played.
I had a decent laugh at his post. Why did you have to bring common sense into this?!?!?!
I hate bunny hoppers ,i usually shock combo them"there no more bunny hopping" j/k sorry wrong genre.:P
I really have no problem myself because none of the f2p are that good,i am lucky to maintain an interest past two weeks. Some of these f2p don't last but one hour on my PC so ya no problem here, they can make a million f2p,they won't be getting any money from me,so no biggie.

Rejoice! You're reaping the benefits of a competitive market. For the consumer these really are grand times.
It is so much fun to embrace the progress of MMOs.
Since the end of my WoW sub, i am no longer shackled to a single MMO, and can spend as little or as much time as i want.
MMO is not "supposed" to be anything .. they are just entertainment products .. and i use them as i see fit.

I like how the same guy who just stated that he would gladly pay 50$ a month for 1 game just called people sheep for choosing to spend their time doing what they want.
no game is worth that and i have had a job since highschool, many, many, foggy years ago.
exactly.
i don't like cash shops too much either though, but the days of buying a game once and owning it is almost gone in the world of Fantasy RPG's. (thank you bethesda for TES)
it is easy to tell.
people complaining about the games like it's a crusade seek a new life, hence all the bitterness.
sure, there are plenty of things that i'm not happy about in life, but i like who i am and would not trade my life for another in fear that i would lose part of what defines me.
but for as grumpy as i am, i just use video games as a source of relaxation and joy, not self-rallied crusading.
I'm actually not a game hopper. I only play one RPG at a time. And "searching" for the game, is by being on forums related to the genre, checking out YouTube videos about games, reading articles and beta testing to see what I'm drawn too.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
