Now that Dragon's Prophet has officially hit public release in North America via Sony Online Entertainment, it's time to begin our Review in Progress. We take the wraps off the game and examine a few of the features in our journey to the final review. Read on and then share your thoughts in the comments.

Dragon’s Prophet is both a game of novelties and innovations... but also severe tired mechanics.  One one hand, it’s dragon taming and training system is the stuff of RPG greatness with a slant of Pokemon.  It’s free-form character progression system is also a welcome addition to the genre’s tired basic “skill trees”.  But you’ll only really come to appreciate either if you can get over the title’s very basic questing and overly-crowded mob spawns.  You might start the game with a cheesy but welcome cinematic, but then DP quickly becomes an adventure of collect this and kill that.  In oh so many ways, it reminds me of TERA.  The combat is redeeming enough to keep me going, and in DP’s case so is the progression of my Ranger and my many dragons.  But if it weren’t for those systems, I’d have rolled my eyes and quit already.

    You actually get your first flyng mount in the early lvl's if you choose the correct starting zone, and by early i mean lvl 7 or less. ( first dragon )

    Reminds you of  Tera? Lol what game are you playing? They actually really have a good concept here but they need to fix the in game lag and optimization settings. This is already open beta and these issues should've been addressed before going into an open beta status.  It's a great game if you can get past the in game lag which is horrible at times, and the fact that you can't optimize your settings improve your gameplay. There are still a ton of bugs, these guys should be more worried about fixing what is wrong and fixing  it fast instead of worrying  about there next podcast every Friday.  

    It is somewhat P2W, if you want to reset attributes and mastery, which shouldn't be something you have to buy with real money. You can earn in game currency to buy out of the shop but at 10 seashells a quest and your goal is a 1000 for that mastery reset powder..well you do the math.

    I am lvl 50 now , but not seeing any patches incoming or updates regarding the lag in the forums. So may have to quit playing til they address these issues if they ever do. I know that Runes of Magic also had the same issues and were never addressed. Let's hope they don't make the same mistake twice, or this boat will sink fast.

    This game is extremely Pay to Win, yes your free S.C. was the only thing that made it bearable for you.

    I would rather it be a $15 a month fee than all the nickel and dime that I see (did not get any S.C. to unlock things) going on in the game.

    Crafting.... crafters are going get hosed unless they spend a butt-load of cash to unlock Bank/Inventory slots, all the raws/rares/components that I have collected, I cannot craft or quest because my slots are full.

    Dragons..... 2 personal and 2 Lair is all you have at start as a free player... ugh

     

    made it to lvl 20 before rethinking playing. so now I just bug report (lots of them) and try to help others with information to their questions.

    Its so much nickel and dime, basically pushing to spend money on Cash shop to be alright... on a game that IS NOT FINISHED. I enjoyed neverwinter, and I know full well they were trying to take my money with a rather rediculous cash shop, but it didn't feel that forced on you, and a game that had many issues not fixed that it felt not fully polished up and fixed. This game not only feels like it pushes it more, but the game itself is extremely unpolished and still a mess, something you might call a Alpha more then a beta.

    Honestly, it jsut screams to me 'cash out' trying to milk money as if they want the cash for a project they just gave up on half way through.

    I almost dropped this until I tamed my first dragon.  They need a better tutorial to get people into the game.  If they want people to play this game, they need to help get people started from the start. Not just combat and class abilities, but crafting, dragon taming and what the stable means (when you put a dragon in the stable and start training abilities....I STILL don't know what's going on!!!), etc.

    I'm having fun, and it's fast paced.  I just wish things were laid out a little better so I can actually find out what's going on.  It's not a huge complaint, I had the same problem with Neverwinter, but Neverwinter wasn't as fun to play as this game.

    I know it's in beta, that's what gives me hope for this game.  With some polish and LISTENING TO PLAYERS, SOE just may have a hit on their hands.  

    My only wish is that they have more variety with regard to class and race.  Pull a Vanguard and give us a bucket load! You have enough starting villages to do so.  This is the influence of the asian mmo's I fear.  Four classes: Tank type, Ranged type, Fireball/Wizard type, Priest/Shammy type.  That's it!?!?  Come on, even EQ had more selection than that, and how old is that game?

    Again, REALLY enjoying this game.  It needs some tweaks, but if I could have the devs listen to one thing I have to say it would be this: work on the starting experience for new players. Given the lack of faith a lot of players have in the industry these days, if you haven't glued the player to their seat within 30 minutes (yes, even in beta) then you've already lost them.  

    For a game in beta though, I'm very impressed.

    This is why I only play P2P games.  I liked Rift, but I quit since they're going F2P.  F2P brings so many negatives to a game for me, that I just won't put up with them.  I guess I'll have to keep playing WoW.  Seems to be the only P2P I like that's out.  Anyone know if ESO will be P2P...God I hope so.

    Good to know!  I started in Hunak, and the 1st one you see is level 17 or so.

    Aside from dragon slots, stable slots and bank slots, which all up will cost you about the same as 1 month sub per item. So in 3 months of normal sub cost you will have everything unlocked.  Everything else in the game can be earnt via daily quest. And I mean everything. Totally nickel and diming!

    I mean, do you people even know what that means anymore? This isn't like Runes of Magic where its compulsory spending.

    I think the inclusion of the pig in the picture is apropos.  This game is ugly. I'm currently playing EQ, though, so maybe I'll check it out when the frontiers are added.

    Apparently you don't know what your talking about I'm currently level 40 and I play this game a lot, and you can get pretty much everything for ingame currency if you do your daily's and you do them often enough you can buy the same stuff as for money so please don't try to sound smart about something you apparently don't know anything about

    The P2W hammers make this game very discouraging, I was pretty interested about this game due to player housing but now I am reconsidering.

    So yeah, in this case... Dragon's Prophet isn't pay to win.  It's more "Pay to not be frustrated."

    I don't know, it seems P2W when anyone who isn't buy hammers wont be able to keep the best gear.

    Liked the game, but I would prefer a sub model to their nickel and dime antics. I have stopped playing because of the store.

    most people are doing dailies anyway to get hammers. I got a lot of SC with my founders pack but I wouldn't waste it on hammers i can get with daily quests. and they aren't even dailies, you can repeat some of them more than once a day.

    Bill I think you forgot to mention although items lose durability you can repair that durability in the item enhancement window where you can also increase damage and energy for the cost of gold, SC, or quest currency.  The % of success goes down the more you do it but it does not go down for durability you can go from 10 to 100 at an 80% success rate.

    I have to clear this up - hammers aren't necessary. If you go to your gear enhancements (default is 'y') you can pay a small amount of gold to enhance an item's durability. The chance to repair never goes down, its always 80% success, and the cost is low. If you hit the max durability (number in parentheses), the item basically goes up a tier (very useful for weapons I find which drop fairly fast).

    And beat to the punch, lol.

    From what I can tell in-game, it seems that repairing without using an SC Hammer will reduce the overall durability of an item.  Say you had 60/80 durability.  You go to repair it in the game, and the repair process fixes the item, but drops durability to 79/79.    

    Now imagine you're at endgame, and have all your favorite items.  The more you repair your gear, the lower that overall durability score will drop, until it's nearly nothing.  UNLESS you use the SC hammers.    

    However, I'd imagine that by then you can easily do some daily quests to keep gear up without dropping your durability.

    It would be nice if they put in a sub option like they do for all of the other SOE MMOs.

    Bill you can go past the cap.  

     

    Example if your weapon has a max damage of 556 and its at 556 and you upgrade it again and it doesnt fail it will go to another level and the new cap will be higher.  So if you have 80 durability and you enhance past the cap it will go up 10-20-30 more and you can go up.  So an item should never hit 0 durability if you have the gold to repair it.

     

    End game items will be expensive to do this to BUT you're end game you should have the gold to do it anyway.
