There have been players in and testing the game for a long while now. The game has been shown at three major shows, and there is a ton of footage on the game, both from in-house video and from third party video at the shows. It also had boxes where you could play the game at PAX Prime. Those features touted from the previous and current Kickstarter campaign are already functional features. They aren't what is keeping the game from being launched. Content is the game's problem right now, it needs more of it. You'll notice the stretch goals in this campaign aren't things like adding new areas to the world. They are programmer and art related tasks. They are things that can be built separately while the content is being completed.
What I think your saying, is that before a game ships you should not take any more money that players are wanting to spend? If that's the case then you have a problem with crowd-funding in general. Which goes back to what I said in my last post. If you have that problem then you should have it with just about every crowd-funded MMO to date because almost all of them open in-house stores after their Kickstarter campaign. If that's your stance though, then your entitled to that opinion.
I don't know what makes you think that they have enough people working on the game to add more features at the same time as adding content when they can't even get the game out...
FYI, JC is co-owner and lead-dev of Repopulation ... he is they.
Even worse then.
Essentially, all he is saying is that he wants more money from people because they are willing to throw it his way.-"that players are wanting to spend"
Meanwhile, he expects people to believe that a tiny team will simply be able to add more features ALONG with more "content" at the exact same speed? Give me a break.
These pie in the sky kickstarter MMOs should raise red flags for people, ESPECIALLY if they have to go through multiple kickstarters and keep delaying their game.
Even if it had potential, the ability for them to stay afloat with a smaller population and the gimmicky nickle and dime "free to play" nonsense kills any possible interest.
And to address this-"The game has been shown at three major shows, and there is a ton of footage on the game, both from in-house video and from third party video at the shows." Sorry, this means nothing. Anyone could put on a show. It has no bearing on the actual game ever being released in anything resembling a competent state. Hell, Duke Nukem Forever had trailers too...
He's saying he is willing to take their money and use it to hire addtitional capacity to get features in that were planned for after release.
ps: I don't think your last concern is valid ... to pick a few from the web:
Are you trying to say that because some people are hopeful and like presentations, that that somehow has an impact on whether a game actually ever gets released?
Has anyone considered the fact that maybe they just want to make the game better? From what I've seen, the game looks beautiful with many features that I have been waiting for in an MMO. I know, I know, I am going to get trolled for saying I am excited for the game and I am an idiot or whatever you may say. But I am excited, especially since the second kickstarter. This shows they are trying hard for more content in the game and want this to be a complete game on release. Think about it. Why on earth would they want to release a game when they know it could be better, and it is affordable to do so? If you don't want to invest in the game, no one is forcing you, and no one is asking your permission to do so either. I have a lot of faith in this team working on the game. So when it is possible, I will make a small contribution to them.
Are you trying to say that because some people are hopeful and like presentations, that that somehow has an impact on whether a game actually ever gets released?
I'd guess it is more that just because you personally feel it may not be released, there are a lot of people who would disagree with you. I'm not sure what would cause you to believe that a game that has been in development for three years and is already very far along would for some reason not stick it out and finish off. I can see your point if your referring to games that start at the concept level. People don't spend years of their lives working on something for free, or for a below market value salary just to one day decide they should one day stop development.
It's also not like the games development cycle has been anything out of the ordinary. Brownie points for anyone who can name a single MMORPG which was announced after The Repopulation (late 2011) which has already reached market. It may be behind some of the initial projections for it, but it certainly isn't outside of the norm for an MMO.
If Repop's goal was simply to reach market, it could be released right now. But it would be buggy and unpolished, midway complete content wise, and some parts of the world would need to be removed because they lack content. That benefits noone. The goal is not to rush the game to market, it's to make sure that when it ships it's ready. If players lose patience waiting, our apologies. But your best chance at long-term success is to get it right at launch.

Ok...
1. Honestly it is pretty refreshing to see a developer in here defending their title, and with more than just 'nuh-uh'. Good job there. I have long thought that Devs should be far more interactive with the players, and recently it seems a few development companies have begun doing that.
2. Despite being insanely eager to play this game, I must applaud your ability to make the hard decision and delay release until it is finished. honestly if I hear another MMO release with: we have a 10 year plan...I may fly to San...anyway, it's BS and I am glad to hear you will release a finished product. It is important as you pointed out (Jc).
3. However, having been down this path before, I personally won't be spending any money on the project until I can play. At the point I can log in and play, I am willing to open my wallet and let loose. Not your fault, but there have been 'fly by night' developers that take the money and run. Not doing that.
4. Beyond point 3, I think it is immature and irresponsible for anyone to attempt to throw a developer under the bus or cast them in a bad light saying that they have 'shady' development practices etc. Obviously I am paraphrasing that, but the just of it is the same.
4a. Immature in that you can't be taken seriously if you want to make statements in a vacuum and not do the very basic research. The fans of this title were on the verge of begging for another chance to donate. So the devs delivered what they wanted, another kick starter. Umm, wait...what? The devs gave the fans what they wanted....please someone explain to me how that is bad...?
4b. Irresponsible. You write all this, and others read it and in true MMORPG fashion, pile on. And as usual, the statements based off assumptions and in no way backed by facts are of course, wrong or at a minimum inaccurate.
So while I am not going to throw my money at this title until I can actually play, I completely disagree with people like Shadow9d9 calling down gloom and doom based off nothing but supposition. Do research people, don't listen to the 2 bit naysayers. hell don't listen to me, go find the facts out for yourself, it's all in the Repopulation forums.
Of course, imo.
If you want a new idea, go read an old book.
In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.
Right. The gullible never cease to amaze me. People never seem to learn.
How about they just release the game as originally promised and then use that money to add more? Then, at least, people will have some idea whether this company has ANY competence whatsoever. All they have now is promises, from a company with no history.
Not free to play system, which will gouge you any chance it gets, since it is the only way to make money(aside from endless kickstarters, which gives them free money).
I agree with you.
Coming back begging for seconds instead of working with what they got from the first one is shady enough. If they needed more from the first kickstarter they should have put it up for more. People are so gullible to go back and give them more. I don't give a crap that their staff is underpaid, and they're working with their own money, that's what they signed up for when they started the game, so I have no sympathy for them, they stand to make hundreds of thousands to millions depending on the suckers that use their cash shop and backed them anyways when they release.
It is just like any other big project. In the end it rarely costs what you thought it would. You can even add 30% to what you calculated and it still wont work. Stuff breaks, gets delayed, bad things happen and then you need more people to fix it or get back on schedule. And people being people dont say "sure no problem" but "oh next week? well that makes 20% more".
As a company you can go to your boss/finance department and ask for more money. If you used a kickstarter you have to start another round because basicly that is your boss/finance department. So in my opinion there is nothing wrong with asking for more.
The game itself looks great and if the features are implemented as advertised I guess it can be a lot of fun. I just hope for some decent alpha testers that the game doesnt end up as another "endgame=raids over and over again" , "follow arrow to quest" and , I dont know how to describe it better, diablo 3ish "deep" itemization, we definitly have enough of those games imo. But from what I've read of what the dev wrote here, it sounds as they are on a good way. And as long as they do it for the game and not (only) the money there is actually a chance for a great game
Are you trying to say that because some people are hopeful and like presentations, that that somehow has an impact on whether a game actually ever gets released?

People believe in all sorts of pie in the sky things all the time. They believed Duke Nukem Forever would come out a decade ago too. Wishful thinking doesn't magically become evidence that something will ever happen.
If the game was anywhere near completion, it would make sense to release a feature complete game. Instead, as you said, you want the free money for nothing in return. It also gives the perfect excuse to delay the game more. If you want to keep "adding features" you could delay the game indefinitely. If the original vision wasn't enough to create a base game and THEN work from there, then that is indeed a problem.
Sure, you will always have the wishful fans who twist and turn to justify their position and keep their dream alive, but again, that is evidence of nothing.
If Repop's goal was to reach the market as originally promised, it still couldn't, even with a delay from 2013. Instead of working hard to actually release what was promised and THEN adding things, this is just a free money grab, followed by easy excuses to continue to delay a game that was not made on schedule. Just keep falling back to the "Well, we are now adding more things!" Maybe even have another kickstarter and add even more. Why not? Free money is free money.
"The goal is not to rush the game to market, it's to make sure that when it ships it's ready." Instead of making sure the original promises are prepared in a timely fashion(you are already late), so you buckle down to deliver on original promises, all you have done is said that even though you have failed to delivered, you should get more money to add even MORE. It makes no sense.
The real goal is to get more money because you were not able to complete the original game as promised. As a bonus, you get extra excuses for delaying a project that is already late. No one turns down free money. Justifying it simply gives a car salesman vibe.
If you really hate that much about this game and the kickstarter, why are you here arguing on someone's thread about a positive feeling towards the game? It is not like your opinion will matter to the OP, myself, or anyone else excited about this game. Most of us can see the potential that The Repopulation has. If you don't want to be a part of it, that is fine, go play something you enjoy.

I should be smarter than responding to this, but here it goes.
I know, from facts, that they work their butts off, often unpaid or paid well below standard. They work with a lot of passion and also do the many volunteers that help out in different areas because they strongly believe in the Repopulation. They have a game in alpha-stage on a shoestring budget , in a time-frime most mmorpgs can't. And even then they always make time to talk to the fans and actually listen to and use their input. It was never delayed as a release date was never announced, slogan has always been "it's ready when it's ready".
The claims you are making are unfounded and outright insulting.
You persist so hard in not listening but preach your gut feelings instead, i give up on further discussion.

Whilst I certainly feel that this game is one of the most promising indie projects in years, I'm just too jaded by past bad experiences to put any money into it until such time as I can play it.
If I enjoy the game, I'll spend generously, as I always do under those circumstances.

The only claim of mine that you attempted to dispute is the projected release date, which was right on the kickstarter page. If they wanted it to be "when it is done," then they could have put 2016 or something more realistic on that site. It was put at 2013 for a reason-to encourage more people to throw money their way.
If they actually wanted it to be done and playable, they should focus on what they already promised rather than asking for more money and making new promises, when they have not fulfilled the old ones.
I asked earlier, but no one answered. With a niche title like this, how do they expect to make money(aside from kickstarters) by making it "free to play"? Are there that many people who care about barbie dress up items? Hell, aside from their poor behavior here, I might have even given it a chance had it been for a proper sub system, where I wouldn't need to be exposed to being nickel and dimed.

@Shadow9D9: Your posts aren't worth responding to at this point. Every single statement you've made has already been addressed previously, your just rehashing things in the loudest fashion possible. You know good and well that Kickstarter requires you to give an ESTIMATED delivery date. Why would we set it at 2016 if our best estimate was an end of 2013 launch? It's an estimated date, nothing more. MMOs generally miss those estimated dates. It's impossible to project a date more than a year into the future on something with so man moving parts and potential unforseen issues. We would have loved to have met it, but we certainly aren't going to ship the game in poor state just to hit an estimate.
I do have a challenge for you though. Since this game is taking way too long to build in your estimation. Name me a list of games of MMOs that were announced after Repop (late 2011) that have already shipped. It's a very simple request. And no Defiance doesn't count, it was announced a few months before Repop.

That's a very fair view. I hope the game delivers, and you find your way there on your terms.
I want to like this game. Yet the pvp focus has me shaking my head and asking why. The decision to force players in to pvp if they want to be part of a player city to run their shop is a game play option that keeps me away . I was told once that they were looking in to this and were trying to come up with other options and have yet to see any changes.
Is it asking to much for us non combat guys to get a game once with as much focus on us as a game from 2003?
Personally I am excited for the crafting system most of all. The idea of being able to craft specialized weapons and being known for my quality wares is very intriguing. I haven't been able to do this since the days of SWG. Since then I never could really sink my teeth into a good crafting system. Also the fact it looks like we will have social areas to hang about in looks great as well. There is nothing like sitting back after a hard battle and laughing with friends and making new ones along the way. This is something most MMO games miss on, that looks like it will be focused on here.

I understand you quite well. My opinion apparently does matter. First you accused me of causing offense to you, then you claim not to care. If replying specifically to one person twice is "not caring," then we have different definitions. SImilarly, expressing a different opinion shouldn't ever "offend" anyone, so maybe we have a different definition for "offend." I go by the one in the dictionary.

If you want a valid comparison, I could come up with a list that asked for money up front, gave an estimate, didn't deliver, and then asked for more money. This money, however, is not going to speed up the delayed game. Instead, the money will serve to expand a game that still hasn't fulfilled original promises, thus delaying the game again. Would you like that list?
It has potential. I like their ideas a lot but most inde devs combat system usually is not that good. If they can nail combat down I would give this a try for sure.

EVERY new title is the Holy Grail of the MMO universe according to their devs.
"going into arguments with idiots is a lost cause, it requires you to stoop down to their level and you can't win"

A great list of free games (mostly MMORPGs): http://www.mytop10games.com/

Ok...
MMORPG.com. Where people cannot be excited about things, without having to be told how utterly retarded they are for being so. Sad
It really is isnt it? It is such a shame that some feel the need to try offending those who have better understanding and patience than themselves.
If you are offended by someone's different opinions, then you shouldn't be on internet forums that expose you to different views.

Oh, you fail to understand me. Your opinions matter too little to me to actually cause offense. Like i said, go, play something you like, the rest of us will have a nice conversation about how good this game is going to be
That's a very fair view.
I understand you quite well. My opinion apparently does matter. First you accused me of causing offense to you, then you claim not to care. If replying specifically to one person twice is "not caring," then we have different definitions. SImilarly, expressing a different opinion shouldn't ever "offend" anyone, so maybe we have a different definition for "offend." I go by the one in the dictionary.
