If I missed one day, I feel like I'm wasting my money. I'd rather buy those expensive purchase than having that kind of feeling in P2P games.
Firstly, this is not a personal attack, just a different perspective.
What you're speaking of, that one day, is roughly .50 cents. If you couldn't remember where you set 50 cents down the day before would you then feel compelled to spend 2 to 4 hours of your day finding that 50 cents?
It is of my opinion that is is a very unhealthy mindset for gamers to have. In the beginning, of course, all games had a monthly subscription. And I realize that those of us from that era have an easier time relating to it, But I still can't see where someone would prefer to pay box price and then have to pay for bag space, bank space, cosmetic junk, and whatever else they charge for in GW2.
Personally, when I find a game that I have time for and feel is worthy of a sub, I sub. Then I know it's there when I feel like playing. I don't feel like I'm wasting 50 cents a day, even if I don't play for 2 to 3 days at a time. I realize that's just me, but I don't see why that couldn't be true for most. I feel it's a healthy way to view that particular payment model.
Just throwing out my 2 cents. o7
Yes, I'm aware of that. It's just 0.50 cents per day, but as stated before, my point is the feeling, not the amount of money. I've unlocked almost everything in GW2 (bag space, bank space, bought all of the costumes, etc) and i've never spent a single penny on it besides the initial box purchase. The choice is there, I can buy them with my hard-earned gold, and I chose that. That kind of choice is also good for me, so that I have targets. I'm willing to see more B2P/F2P games to implement that kind of cash shop that GW2 has. You can buy pretty much everything in the cash shop with your in-game gold. That could be one of your target, your endgame.
Not to forget ST:O either, they had a lifetime sub option as well
And funny as it is, most games that had lifetime subs, failed horribly in the end
How many games that sold lifetime subs have shut down? That is the only relevant definition of 'failure' , if theyre still up and running and people can still play them and everything they offer for nothing even if theyre 'free to play' now then the lifetime sub offers value.
People love to throw money away, just wait for it to go F2P ffs. Two of my kids are in on the beta again this weekend, since the last one i've not heard a word about ESO and it's been nice, i'm ESO'd out hearing about it.
I'm interested to find out how much gets played this weekend, and if he does i hope the novelty wears out as i know they are going to go for Collector boxes, yeah and at over 100 each only to watch it go free to play months later, well, sucks.

after TSW and LOTRO... never ever again, guys don't be stupid even if they add lifetime sub... do not buy it...
unless of course you play it a lot. It's a gamble sure, but since I still play LOTRO I would have actually saved a lot of money.
Unless you play it "for a long time" you mean... But yes, it can be worth it financially of course, if you intend to play for 2-3+ years. It has to have a lot of pulling power from the start to justify it though. And the deterioration that usually comes with the F2P transition is a bit of a turn off for me.
Perhaps you (or I) will feel the same appeal for this world as you felt for the world of Lotro in what case it would be worth it, certainly.
The problem is that it is always difficult to evaluate how the content will evolve over the course of time, and perhaps it is a failure of developers to not be able to communicate the long term view of their project (roadmap, possible additions to the game, classes, expansions, etc.). Thinking about it, I would be much more confident to invest a large sum in a developer that would be more transparent about their post release plans (even though there is no real accountability then).
That's very true. My only thought is that the player needs to "know" that they are invested in the world "come what may" and make their decision based off of that.
Lord of the Rings online, to me, is greater than the sum of its flawed parts. So it merits a life time sub. Any game a player plays needs to have that same "weight" in order to justify the money.
For TSW those that got the lifetime sub have already got their value back because they get tokens each month that can be used for content updates and cosmetic stuff. It was also cheaper than any other lifetime I've see ($200.)
Now if they don't play the game with any regularity, then yes they have wasted their money. Lifetime option in any game should only be for the diehard. If you can't look at a game and say, "This is the one I've been waiting for. I love this game. I love playing this game;" you should not be thinking about a lifetime sub.
Not to forget ST:O either, they had a lifetime sub option as well
And funny as it is, most games that had lifetime subs, failed horribly in the end
Just a coincidence. SWTOR did not offer LT sub and failed faster than STO did (that is if you regard fail = going F2P)
Whatever ESO is like I may just give it a fair shake for a good year or two (before giving up) and stick with it regardless, as long as there are plenty of things to do in it, day after day. If it gets better as time goes on then will not need to give up on it. SWTOR probably would have been better (had better content and features) than it has now, if people (including myself) did not give up on it. The devs can not create new awesome things for their MMO if it is not getting enough revenue. If after two years if it does not improve / advance in a good direction, then chances are it never will.

It makes it sound like you hope they end up not liking the game, so you don't have to shell out the money. If you don't want to shell out the money, then don't. Tell your kids no. I'm sure I'm misunderstanding what you wrote though. I hope so.
well I got a lotro and TSW lifetime and I have had my moneys worth and more out of both games.well at least lotro at least.got my lifetime when codemasters were selling them at £75 about 3 or 4 yrs ago so definatly worth every penny.still playing TSW and enjoying it as well.so it worked out for me.if I had to do it again I probably would do it again.i doubt there will be lifetime in ESO.
People who got the lifetime sub to DCUO are going to actually have a fantastic deal starting in April, because they will switch to having subscriber benefits for every SOE game for as long as DCUO stays running.
That said, like I pointed out last week, offering a lifetime sub is a sure sign of a developer who thinks their product won't have good long term subscriber retention. That doesn't mean they think the game is bad, or that it's going to "fail," just that they think the number of consecutive months they can squeeze a sub fee out of most of their player base amounts to an average revenue less than whatever the lifetime price is. As a practical matter, in today's market, it is basically a guarantee that they plan to add a free option in the future, no matter what they are saying about their plans.

Be interesting to see if SOE shuts down DC once EQNext comes out.
I suspect they will figure 3 years for EQnext to get released hat makes DC 6 years old and peole havemore than gotten their moneys worth out of it.
But right now with the games SOE offers that all access pass is garbage.

It is a MMO, and the developers will improve the game over time, as long as it gets enough revenue. All ES fans should still get it and keep playing even if find the game weak, as it should not stay weak long. If people do not support the game and it goes F2P later then the game will not be updated with awesome new content and only get lame cheap content.
Imagine a film is being made, with enough revenue they would make it 2.5 to 3 hours, but with lack of funds may only be about 1.5 hours. For a fan of the movie series then they would want to get the full length, but people who are just after a fun movie may not care it being more than 1.5 hours as long as that 1.5 hours was enjoyable and it all made sense, but for a fan the missing 1.5 hours would be devastating, and that is what happens when MMOs go F2P - they never become the game that was intended, as the devs do not have the revenue to make it all. If someone is a ES fan then they should buy into it every step of the way, to turn it into the best ES experience ever made.

"Lifetime subs" are good if you're going to play the game more than a year or two. I wish I had done that for LotRO and STO.
But let's be honest, they're not lifetime subs. They're flat fee microtransactions (or macro if you're picky) for a one off purchase of premium account status. A real lifetime sub is just that, subscribing for life. I find it funny that all the pro-P2P people on this thread jump at the lifetime sub which is totally anti-subscription. You're basically saying, I want the benefits of a permanent subscription for the cost of a little more than a year of sub time. So which is it? Do you want subs or do you want microtransactions where you purchase account perks and improvements?
I think the amount should be much higher say 1000.00 for a lifetime sub. There you go.

Lifetime sub in this day and age is not as valuable as it once was.
Reason for this is the amount of MMO's available these days. About 4 average and 1 good mmo launch every year now. On the flip-side, we are now seeing several games get closed down.
If you invest in a game that trips and falls in the first year. They will be forced to go free to play, which drastically changes the character of a game. Then after they hit a certain point....the cash store is maxxed out and the revenue dries up and they are forced to close the doors.
It's a cycle that I don't want to invest in as a gamer. I choose to pay for possibly 6 months at a time if I see a game is very successful and I had a great amount of fun in the first few months and I can see myself not getting board in that amount of time.
There is no game at this point and time that is worth me throwing $200 or more at it. Now that could change with a fully integrated Oculus Rift game that changes the way games are played. Until then....games can keep those lifetime subs. Only original EQ and WoW and Rift have made me come back over the years to play for another good while. So only 3 games would have been worth it over the years for me to do the lifetime investment.....but only at a certain pricepoint. Go above that and you are just wasting your $$$

SOE wont close DC... DC has so much ppl playing its crazy. Just go there and see for yourself. The server is full, always groups to do anything and everything, from low levels to the most higher tiers and has a fair amount of high level content of course.
It's a very healthy game and very much alive! Plus... it has a character of its own. SOE will first shut down EQ in favor of EQN (which kinda makes sense if you think about it) than shutdown DC.

What makes you think that if someone accepts one form of microtransaction they need to accept all microtransactions? I can judge each one individually as to whether it's acceptable to me. Paying your sub in one lump sum is fine with me. Being able to buy "improvements" for your character is a big drawback which will definitely make me think twice before giving any money to that game...
I guess if they do a LTS option they'd have to figure in the amount of players nowadays who have LTS to 1+ games already when it came to deciding what they'd charge and benefits
And a LTS is great as you can be away from the game for time and still get the benefits of subbing, some of you have said just wait for F2P but even they are ok with LTS. Like my two are to TSW (did Asa soon as you could) and awhile ago to my old CO account since I enjoy that on Gold.
If ESO gets a LTS option then I guess I'll have 3 lol .. I must admit if AO, UO, EVE and maybe a few others had LTS I'd get them with those too

Torvaldr, I know you're an F2P evangelist, but your argument here is in danger of eating itself. Carry on down that road and it can be argued that the "subscription payment model" never actually existed, because the monthly access payments are just discrete microtransactions, like buying XP pots or extra dungeon runs every week. Buying a game box is just another microtransaction, etc.

Moreover, DCUO is scheduled to launch in SEA region this year.
I must admit if AO, UO, EVE and maybe a few others had LTS I'd get them with those too
LTS before you even try it and then the game goes F2P in 6 to 9 months.
Endless amount of butthurt all around.
*shrug*
Torvaldr, I know you're an F2P evangelist, but your argument here is in danger of eating itself. Carry on down that road and it can be argued that the "subscription payment model" never actually existed, because the monthly access payments are just discrete microtransactions, like buying XP pots or extra dungeon runs every week. Buying a game box is just another microtransaction, etc.
