It's very much about immersing yourself in a story and presenting a place that could potentially exist - and not a gigantic Toys R Us that's there only to serve instant gratification until you logout.

I wanted to give this "review" a chance, but he clearly didn't take the game seriously in any way. He acted as if he was slightly drunk - and his buddies seemed to be there only to reinforce any uninformed critique he tried to be funny about.
I'll give him points for his comments on the Collector's Edition and the paywall argument, because I think that's exactly right.
But his overly laid back and disinterested angle of approach was juvenile at best and retarded at worst.
Also, he seemed to really enjoy GW2 - which I consider one of the worst MMO designs in the history of the genre - albeit with a fantastic engine and strong visual aesthetic, and a game specifically made for people who enjoy the meaningless hamster wheel but don't want to feel challenged and obligated to think or work for anything. I get the sense that's the kind of game Joe would have wanted overall.

Well, to each his own - but this "review" is a very bad joke.
I can assure you, that from what i've seen he takes it very seriously, not sure how you got the impression that he wasn't tbh. Of course everyone has different opinions based on what they like or dislike in any particular game, and like any review its from his own perspective, but i think you'll find that a lot of people will identify with him, and while there will always be a certain amount of 'disagreement' on points, overall i think he was pretty much telling it how it is. But he definitely does take it seriously

One of the things AJ said was that it felt like a low budget version of skyrim, and that he left it feeling like he wanted to actually go play skyrim again, just to get the whole 'package' kind of thing.
But, he also said in the beginning that he felt Zenimax were open to suggestions, and that maybe it wasn't too late to make a few changes etc, based on them, or at least thats what it seemed like. Maybe in the next month or so they really can do a bit more, but i think now the game really hangs on how good or bad the PVP is going to be.

Considering we're talking about an MMO, it's pretty obvious that the massively multiplayer design is part of it.
ESO is about sharing the TES experience with friends - and sharing that world with thousands of people, creating a social community.
Obviously, if you don't enjoy socialising in that setting - and you don't think there's room for an ES game that makes concessions to function as an MMO, ESO won't be for you.
Personally, I am fully capable of enjoying TES singleplayer games while I'm enjoying an MMO set in the same world, which might not be quite as good in terms of creating amazing visuals and a world that revolves around me alone - but which does allow me to share a similar experience with so many other people.
Then there's the whole AvAvA aspect, which I'm not personally too interested in - but I can easily see how that would appeal to the competitive mindset - and I think they've done a reasonable job presenting the reasons for that war.
Essentially, ESO is for people who enjoy both ES games and MMOs - and who understand that an ES game with thousands of people could never, ever, work just like the singleplayer games.
Is it perfect? No, not at all.
But it's the most refreshing and appealing MMO to come out, to me, since..... Lord of the Rings Online, I think. Unfortunately, LOTRO was ruined by the F2P disease, but originally it had a similarly strong RPG feel to it that i really liked.

I don't know why you think you have the authority on what goes on in his mind, but that doesn't work for me, sorry.
In that video, he struck me as a semi-drunk teenager trying a new game with his friends - whilst trying to appear cool and trendily dismissive.
That said, I don't have a lot of respect for him when it comes to design insight - and he's always smacked of being a casual/mainstream gamer with limited knowledge, but he's a decent representation of the larger audience - I'll give you that.
Let's just say I don't have a lot of respect for the insights or patience of the larger audience, either.
That's fine - but I'm not the larger audience, and I don't play games like some people watch daytime TV. I play games because I'm passionate about them - and I care about what the developers are trying to do, so I don't dismiss things out of hand without thinking about it a little or doing some research. I also don't let my semi-retarded friends hold the authority on how things work in a game they clearly haven't played enough to make judgement calls on the design.
For instance, they're dead wrong about quest items having to spawn for each player. That was fixed a while ago.

That was scary. Reading your post made me feel as if I was looking in the mirror. Every word you wrote is exactly how I feel including your Lord of the Rings comments.. For the type of play style I'm into and whether I wish it was more like Skyrim or not, it is the best MMO choice for now for the type of MMO gamer I am which I fully respect isn't everyone's style.
I'm not in beta but i agree with the guy from background, who says ESO feels like "run for a 4 mins, kill a monster, run for another 4 mins, talk to a guy, get 20 gold, kill another monster" and that it feels like there's nothing to do in-between the quests, like side quests or stuff like that. This is a huge problem in many mmos. Where did the game part of MMORPG go? Stories are nice but we're supposed to get a game, a multiplayer game even.
Combine this with linearity and hand holding and i can't see myself playing this title in near future. I might check it out when it goes f2p and i'm not expecting that to take very long.
Yet, another biased preview and to be honest. I'm getting sick of all these pesudo-pro previewers on YouTube.
A preview should never end with a "I think" or "I predict" section. This was fracking unprofessional. It only showed how biased AngryJoes opinion is. Argueing about the expense of a horse? Comparing the first steps in this game as WoWs Barrens? Saying while shooting the video he maybe should have asked the guy in the cool armor how the game is in later levels?
A good preview is based upon decent experience of a game and lets the viewer make his own conclusion. Especially TESO needs roundabout 10 hours of exploration and lets say examination before you get sucked in. Playing TESO like a F2P tubed quest hub grinder will give you a F2P tubed quest hub grinder. There are a lot of quests and explorational content that you need to find.
I'm sad.... another great franchise ruined in the mmo genre.
I dunno man, my guess is Wildstar will go f2p even sooner.
Sadly this is most likely true. Wildstar and EQN are my last straws for the MMO genre. If both are disappointments MMOs will be dead for me.
The only hope for the genre are sandbox games.
I HATE pvp I really really do. Yet I can't help feeling ESO would benefit a lot from a FFA system. I would even buy and try it as that would feel more like a elder scrolls game to me. At least make a server to test the waters.
The first MMO you loved will always be the best. You will never get that feeling back stop trying.

Sandbox games phased out and themparks are soon to phase out soon, who knows what new breed of mmo's will freshen up the game. No matter what game it is you'll get bored of it after continuous play, MMORPG's seem to really grasp you for the first years then after 5 that magic wares off and ruins you of other MMO's. Single player games are more or less the same but they do well cause people aren't playing the same genre for years at a time.
The leveling experience is supposed to be the best times of a MMO, but they throw you at max level so fast nowdays. The hard part of keeping you coming back to an MMO once you reached level cap is gameplay that's not repetitive and that's all MMO's have been at level cap. Dailies are a poor invention to make you come back to the game, they are terribly boring and are always the same.

Considering he does a first impressions video usually first and a first impression is not a preview you kinda see why you look like a ... fanboi to most people. My advice: Stop feeling insulted if someone does not like the same game you do even if that person is, probably, more experienced in gaming and vastly more respected than you currently are.

I don't remember there being millions of triple A budget sandbox games like it was the case with themeparks.

Sandbox games phased out? Hu?
Sandbox games appeal to a very limited audience, its why there are so few of them, and afaik, the only one thats really successful, is Eve online, which has a 'massive' 500k players, there are a few others but the number of people playing them is really very low, its not a market that most Games companies appear to feel all that comfortable trying to compete in, nor would be happy to risk only pulling in the odd few thousand players, which is really the main issue, generally games companies want to have their game appeal to a broad playerbase, inevitably that seems to mean that they don't have any choice but to go the 'themepark' route, where at least there is a demand for more variety. Not sure where the Themepark games being 'phased out' comes from either tbh, not that i see any genre 'disappearing' Sandbox or Themepark, unless everyone tomorrow decides they want to play chess online. I would like to see more SciFi MMO's though, not based on either Star Trek or Starwars. just a shame Wildstar looks so .. cartoony, just can't seem to take games like that seriously.

I'm not feeling insulted. I simply say that what he refers to as impression is biased and unprofessional.
His first impression video can be compared to a Action movie review just that the reviewer only watched the first 2 minutes of the movie and then comes out with his superb evaluation, stating that the first impression feels like Dolph Lundgren was trying to act like Arnold Schwarzenegger and it thatfor seems like a "have seen that". But we should wait a bit more, because soon(tm) he will see more of the movie and that he heard that the explosions in the mid part of the movie were great.
And btw. I don't give a shit for his 1,3kk reviewers or if this amount means that you are *serious dumbledore voice fading in* woohoo vastly experienced and respected. I don't know his other videos, but this one was ridiculously biased. Nothing else.
Well, I could now hand out my CV of 25 years gaming experience, but I think it makes more sense to just get a coffee.

That's because people mistake sandbox to be synonymous with forced PvP. The Repopulation allows people who don't like PvP to completely avoid it. Its also why EvE is successful. A fantasy version of EvE would keep a million players easily.

"Especially TESO needs roundabout 10 hours of exploration and lets say examination before you get sucked in."
If it requires 10 hours for it to hook a person, there is a serious flaw in it's game design.
"I simply say that what he refers to as impression is biased and unprofessional."
If you can, please specifically point out the parts that are biased and unprofessional. Just because you say it is, doesn't make it so. Proof is important. Current;y as of now, you sound like a whiny little fan boy because someone didn't give a game you like a good review.
"His first impression video can be compared to a Action movie review just that the reviewer only watched the first 2 minutes of the movie and then comes out with his superb evaluation"
He played up to level 9, which probably takes a few hours if not longer if you are not rushing through it. Again, if you are not hooked or at least interested by this point, the game has a very major flaw. How long do you expect a person to try a game before they are allowed to give their opinion on it? If they meet your "requirements" and still give the same exact impressions, I bet you would still say it was biased and unprofessional.
"Stop watching. Play games on your own. Give the game a chance to suck you in. And make you very own sum up."
In which case, I agree with Angry Joe, and I decided that all on my own. Are you Mad? Think I'm unprofessional? Think I am biased?
"I don't know his other videos, but this one was ridiculously biased."
Again, care to explain exactly what portion of his video was biased? Keeping in mind, the definition of biased is ,unfairly prejudiced for or against someone or something, in which case as far as I saw he did not do that. His evaluation was perfectly fair.
All i got from that "review" was some guy playing the beta with a bunch of other folks on VoIP, going "f*ck f*ck!!", "dude, dude!", "awesome, dude!" all the way, showing their pathetic eVip attitude.
^^^^ This
My beta experience was much more enjoyable than this Joe guy lets on.
If I were a developer, I wouldn't give this Youtube hack an NDA pass.

It's a friggen first impression not a review he doesn't need to be serious when he's trying out the game for the first time.
You are taking it way too seriously over a game.
I didn't say he needed to be. I said he wasn't.
Glad you agree
Sadly this is most likely true. Wildstar and EQN are my last straws for the MMO genre. If both are disappointments MMOs will be dead for me.
The first MMO you loved will always be the best. You will never get that feeling back stop trying.
The only hope for the genre are sandbox games.

eso too
That was scary.
There Is Always Hope!
Ridiculous preview!
Sandbox games phased out? Hu?

Well.. It was.. If you quit after the first month.
Sandbox games haven't had a chance so I don't see how they have phased out.
I don't remember there being millions of triple A budget sandbox games like it was the case with themeparks.
Stop watching. Play games on your own. Give the game a chance to suck you in. And make you very own sum up.

^^^^ This
My beta experience was much more enjoyable than this Joe guy lets on.
If I were a developer, I wouldn't give this Youtube hack an NDA pass.
