Absolutely nailed it. Not sure if I hate quest hubs or game monetization more; probably quest hubs since they destroy the 'massively' part in MMORPG.
Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon. In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit
and leveling..do away with it ..not every mmorpg that is made HAS to have a leveling system ..oh and open world pvp servers added with pve only servers
I can't understand why levels still exist in many mmo's. Dam, you have mmo's such as GW2 that arbitrarily alter levels to suit the area you are in- if levels are that fucking pointless, why have them in the first place???
It's because levels are a big part of the ever important skinner box.
Casual players. They have caused everything which is wrong with open world MMO's today.
Yet without the money from the casual players, most MMOs wouldn't even exist.
Not necessarily, I would agree there would be a lot fewer, but there was enough people during the late 90's early 2000's to keep games running. The nerds woulda kept the genre going, just wouldn't be a main stream genre......... that actually would probably be a good thing

Originally posted by SEANMCADNaturally everyone has their own view on what is the worst feature in most MMOs. Mine is rather different. For me its the 3rd person view.
That's an interesting point. I remember when I played EQ1, with its first person view, how I felt after a time that I was looking through my own character's eyes. The giants looked big because I looked up at them. The towering castle seemed ominous and towering, because I looked up.
In contrast, everything int he 3rd person view is looking down and thereby lessened in visual impact. Now, while 3D is very cool to look at, being able to see your entire character, and my preferred style, it definitely comes at a cost of immersion.
Absolutely. First person perspective makes it feel like I'm in the world; Third person reminds me constantly that I'm playing a game. A buddy of mine prefers third person and I just don't get it. I may switch to third once in a while to get a cool outside view; but primarily it's first person.
Depends, probably, on what 3D game the person started on. I started with Doom, which was first person. But skyrim, et. al., are third person, I think.

I also prefer third person .. and yes, it feels like a game .. but I am playing games. FP is just another "game" interface to me. It does not feel real without the actual 3D depth perception.
In fact, sometimes i prefer isometrics because i can see more of the game.
Elitist Veteran Know-it all Epeen gamers. The. Worst. ->.<-
You know those folks that try to remove every convienence from the game that makes it even a little bit tolerable to play, so that everything you do can be a ridiculously hollow accomplishment of surviving soul-sucking brain-dead repetitive tedium. Yeah, those folks, you might have seen a few around however they are probably on some forum somewhere crying about LFG tools, "!" icons or soloing.

Far above all others that I find annoying, Group finder is just community breaking. It turns even the best people into the worst. Nobody will talk (although every once in awhile I find someone that will want to be friends). Everyone just wants to ninja loot. Everyone has no respect for each other, because they'll never see that person again.
Most of the stuff that people have said they disliked can be ignored in games.
LFG/Group finder....don't use it
Fast Travel/teleportation nodes...don't use them
Mounts...don't use them
Quests....don't do them
See easy to fix.
It does not matter if you use LFG or not. The point is they water down the content to basically hack and slash because with and LFG tool that throws 4+ random people into a group can never be expected to work as a team. Look at Wing 2 SoO, if either of the 2 tanks want to tank the towers the raid will fail and be a pile of shit. I know I been in 6 LFRs that blew because either tank wanted to go into the towers. But in LFR you can be a turd because their is 0 repercussions if you refuse to do what is needed to be successful. So they cannot have any boss fight that requires any mental effort at all. So what happens all content gets watered down to this point to make people who dont want to spend any effort on a game happy. Yes the 30 a minute week guy needs to feel important today. Thats why LFG tools that are automated are the worse tool in modern MMOs. Why can players not be expected to be held to some standard. Like Make friends learn fights and instances that are not 10 minute zerg rushes. O thats right because you feel you are so important you special snowflake who players 30 minutes a week and wants a medal, pat on the back and a cookie.
In my opinion no single feature can be bad per se. They are all tools to implement certain Gamedesign goals and decisions. So you better ask what Design goals are bad.
Take e.g. things like group finder. A tool that helps to form groups faster. Not bad at all. But the underlying design goal is to make real communities obsolet. It enables the playerbase to stop to make ingame contacts and friends and simply play with strangers. If the developer comes to that decision, many more features/ tools with that in mind will follow. Maybe even existing features like group play in the open world will be kicked. And depending on your own preferences this may lead to a game you don't wanna play. So not the feature is the problem, but the goal you want to achieve with it.
But maybe it's only a question of cause and effect ....
Random group finders. I don't mind the way Guild Wars 1 and 2 have done it where you can post your party looking for more, and for specific things. I really prefer seeing people in main cities looking for groups, or hanging around dungeon entrances looking for groups. I just prefer the more natural approach. Now it isn't a huge deal because I can just choose to ignore it and not use it.
I can't stand weapon and equipment restrictions. If I want to be a warrior in cloth robes so be it. If I want to be a mage in full plate armor, so be it.
I am not too fond of the Auction Hall type systems. I would much rather see a trading hub, or the ability to set up your own shop. I don't mind the way Wildstar had done it where you can create a work order.
It would be really cool if they would expand upon that. If someone were to create a work order, and you accept it - like in Eve online you would fulfill contracts for other players.
Then there is a little bit of interaction there. Say you put out an order for 200 logs of wood and someone accepts it from you, gather those materials and then send them to you. You can thank them, or build a relation ship some what.
In GW2 for example - I have no idea who is buying or selling stuff.

Group/Dungeon/Raid Finder hands down.

Currently Playing: ESO and FFXIV
Have played: You name it
If you mention rose tinted glasses, you better be referring to Mitch Hedberg.
staring at a spellbook .... not a common feature, but certainly worst (for me .. since "worst" is obviously subjective).
Static natures of everything -
Everything in the same area is the same level, nothing ever migrates, few changes occur.
Its funny that EQ came out so many years ago and there were things like the following all of which I loved -
Zone wide "migration pathing" of some mobs. Nothing like standing in a spot just to have something trample right over you
Kithicor forest that went from a low level zone during the day to a high level zone at night.
Many camps all over that had enemies that may be a good 10 levels difference in the same camp.
Areas that have widely varied different level content all within a few steps.
These days on most all MMOs you walk to area X and kill everything in sight, go to area Y then repeat.
And that wouldn't be such a bad thing from where I stand.

overly busy combat
tab target or action combat are both guilty.
Its non stop clicking or moving with little strategy involved. group mechanics range from mediocre to non existent.
Either
Instancing
or
Quest based leveling.
Those two features combined do some of the most damage to the feeling of a coherent world and social gameplay
+1

Very much so. Options are good.

Lol sorry had to do it. Totally serious, but just trolling...
