Metacritic has never been influential in my decisions to buy or pass on games. The disparity in scores between users and journalists alike is so off its not even funny. Just a bunch of opinions put together in a massive pile of junk, ready to be burned.
Just messing around on my lunch break and looked up Destiny on Metacritc:
Playstation 4: 5.6
X Box One: 4.6
X Box 360: 4.4
Playstation 3: 3.6
Average is a 4.55.
98% of the "negative reviews" are players giving the game a 0....thats correct....0......regardless of how much this game doesn't live up to the hype, I am sure that it deservs more than a 0.
It's not so much a plan as something that I might do, but if Destiny hasn't collapsed into a Black Hole by the time Silent Hills comes out, it might be something I pick up for the PS4. I can't just buy a PS4 for Silent Hills. That would be insane.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
Honestly, I couldn't care less. I got to try the game for free during Alpha and Beta, and already knew then it's worth buying. Heck, it was one of the main reasons I got my PS4 in the first place. People are just being butthurt they can't play it on PC. Personally I'd give the game 10/10, because it's pretty close to perfection. And if people are giving it 0 for no reason, then why not, if I like it. Been playing since midnight, when it launched here, only with a break for a nap, and still enjoying every moment. Amazing gameplay, great polish, and crazy little details will keep me busy for a while,

I dunno about that...iv'e gotten more enjoyment out of the P.T. than I have out of a few recent AAA MMO releases...
I doubt majority of console gamers even know what Metacritic is which leads me to believe its just a bunch of PC elitist that hate anything to do with consoles rating it who probably havent even played the game them selves.
The vast majority of the PCMasterrace Reddit community is less than 21 years old (http://imgur.com/a/GJaBF). With that comes a lot of immaturity which is being displayed every single day on the internet. I would hope that the MMORPG community is a bit more mature and self-thinking than that.
Watch streams or wait for the opinion of your favorite reviewer to make your decision. Don't blindly accept bad reviews from unknowns.

I agree. People who are really jealous for whatever reason can't seem to look through their own eyes with a fair and reasonable perspective.
Giving a game a zero score just skews ratings and reviews and does nothing for their credibility or the credibility of the site that they are basically ruining.
It's actually a cross between laziness and childishness. I mean, how many of those giving it a zero actually bought and played it because if they had, what a poor judgement to buy a game that you totally don't get.

Give it up with the PC elitist crap already
Games like Red Dead Redemption have great scores and are not released on PC. Has much more to do with hype than anything.
These kinds of statements seem as immature as the zero scores given.

The problem lies in gamers being so binary that they only give things either 10 or 0. Those scores are the majority, split almost 50/50 between 10 and 0. Very few scores are anything in between.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein "Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre
Yep - Defiance is an average MMO shooter, with a 6.6 score. It's an average game. Also Defiance was like a $30million Dev cost game - Destiny is a 300 million Dev cost + 200mil marketing budget. All the 0/10 and 10/10 scores offset on metacritic - so in the end the score still reflects the user rating.

Most people who actually bought the game, are busy playing. I have clocked 6 hours in Destiny today. Going to bed now. Totally exhausted. :P
Oh yes I'm sure thats it.... or maybe you know the people playing Destiny are calling it like it is - a mediocre shooter with linear gameplay and tired content....
Isn't it you that talks up Defiance as if it's anymore than just what you said here?

I don't think I've ever seen you say anything good about a game that wasn't made by Trion actually. And I don't think you've ever said anything bad about a Trion game either. I could be wrong though. I like Trion too, but you really like them.

All those zero's are angry PC players, because the game didn't launch on PC today and they have to wait till May next year.
Then the people that enjoy the game, are going to give 10 scores to try balance it out. So in the end it's just voting game between fans and trolls. Who is going to out vote who.
It's the exact same crap on IMDB and why you can't rely on any rating score there for Movies.
I played the game during alpha and beta thinking it was nothing special and something that had been done a million times. I played and was blown away at how FUN it was. Looking at videos and playing it are two separate things. After alpha, I immediately preordered.
My brother say me playing beta and said, "it looks boring." HE then played Beta for 2 hours and was HOOKED.
I read all of the "reviews" on Metacritic. Majority of them are either PC fanboys butthurt because it wasn't simultaneously released on PC (master race). Xbox fanboys are butthurt because Xbox is forbidden in advertising the game on that console.
The ratings are very immature and not reflective of the games merits. Maybe critics feel the game is a 7 or an 8, fine. But peole rating it a a 1 are nothing but paid trolls or have an axe to grind.
I played the game, I loved it. This game is going to be critic proof. I have no idea how long it will last, but many many people get a few months of SOLID enjoyment out of it, whether you like pve or pvp. Heck, is $60 worth months of playtime... yes it is.
Judge for yourself. The metacritic reviews a day after a release are a complete sham.
However, if you talk to me about having DLC 3 months after release for 20 bucks... to me that's high way robbery and something that should have been included with the game. But that's another issue altogether. That's more Activision than Bungie.
The user rating score for extremely hyped products often reflects the emotion that the game provokes instead of the actual quality of the game. If we assume people score it on a love vs hate scale the score you get still reflects the user rating, and the average on a 0 to 10 hate/love scale is 5.0.
As much as people would like to discredit people voting 0 because they dislike it you should also discredit every person that gives it a 10 on the basis that they enjoy the game.
Iselin: And the next person who says "but it's a business, they need to make money" can just go fuck yourself.
Other console only games received high scores on Metacritic. I believe the issue has to do with the insane amounts of hype preceding it's release. Destiny was advertised as the Messiah of an entire genre which clearly it is not. It is a very good game enjoyable to play and venture into his world. Nothing more.

If the game is an 8.5 and you give it a 10... that's not THAT big of a difference..
But if a game is 8.5 (bias aside) and you give it a 1... that is way more influential in skewing the score than the fanboys giving it a 10.
Basically, for a game that is THIS hyped, your only solution is to IGNORE user scores. Rely on CRITIC scores that you've trusted in the past for similar games. If you like IGN reviews, see how they've reviewed your favorite games, and if the reviewer seems to line up with your own taste, then rely on the review.
Or better yet, find a buddy that has the game, go over, play a little yourself and decide to buy it or not. The alpha and beta was enough for me. This game is not going to get an accurate player review score. Too many emotions involved.
The way that I see it is that if you're gonna spend a shed load of cash to convince people that your game is super special, it better BE super special.
Because if it's just decent people will feel betrayed by you and hammer you in the user reviews.
Overhyping for average product will bite you on the butt every time.

Nah, because any reviewer can be bought at any given time. Games journalism is a shit can of amateur ego and greed that should never be relied on.
My advice these days is to never pre order or even buy anything in the first 3 months in general. True opinions tend to come out around then, once people start to get over the emotional need to bash or protect a game.
I do make exceptions myself though to this,I admit, but I tend to accept it as my own fault if the game turns out crappy.
I am reading the reviews now on metacritic. The positive are ALL fanboy reviews with no substance, maybe 1/10 went into detail... The Negetive reviews go into detail a bit more, but the score is too low to accurately describe their feelings toward the game and most likely they did this to troll/ "balance the fanboy 10s"
The mixed reviews were the most well written and professional. So using my intuition about these sort of things, I will guess the game is an average shooter, with some MMO elements, nice graphics and level design, and well-developed gunplay. Many are saying it is repetitive as hell though.
Now Playing: Bless / Summoners War Looking forward to: Crowfall / Lost Ark / Black Desert Mobile
Gamezone has a funny or sad (depending on your point of view) article on this. It pulls out a number of gems from the - relatively few - user reviews including:
The reviewer that gave the game a 1 on PS4 - due to bad streaming - but a 10 on XB1. (Did the person buy 2 copies?)
And the 0 review because its an online game not an offline game and none of his friends was buying it .... and there are more.
Lots of mainstream professional reviews in progress out there - far more than just the gaming press ones. They are something else. (For anyone unaware reviewers only got in a few hours before everyone else. What they review is what we have!

User reviews on Metacritic are rarely worth paying attention to.
There is no vetting and no barrier to just giving out a 0/10 to make a point.
This happened for example with Dota 2 (http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/dota-2) because an event didn't happen and also with Company of Heroes 2 (http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/company-of-heroes-2) because russians.
