The user rating score for extremely hyped products often reflects the emotion that the game provokes instead of the actual quality of the game. If we assume people score it on a love vs hate scale the score you get still reflects the user rating, and the average on a 0 to 10 hate/love scale is 5.0.
As much as people would like to discredit people voting 0 because they dislike it you should also discredit every person that gives it a 10 on the basis that they enjoy the game.
If the game is an 8.5 and you give it a 10... that's not THAT big of a difference..
But if a game is 8.5 (bias aside) and you give it a 1... that is way more influential in skewing the score than the fanboys giving it a 10.
Basically, for a game that is THIS hyped, your only solution is to IGNORE user scores. Rely on CRITIC scores that you've trusted in the past for similar games. If you like IGN reviews, see how they've reviewed your favorite games, and if the reviewer seems to line up with your own taste, then rely on the review.
Or better yet, find a buddy that has the game, go over, play a little yourself and decide to buy it or not. The alpha and beta was enough for me. This game is not going to get an accurate player review score. Too many emotions involved.
I do agree on your advice of actually checking it out instead of buying it blindly. At least there is a general decline in pre-orders so more and more people have learned to not listen to the hype machine.
As far as the game goes, the previews I read few months back stated that they were mostly disappointed and had expected far more than the game was delivering, and I had similar comments from my friends that played it in beta.
Iselin: And the next person who says "but it's a business, they need to make money" can just go fuck yourself.
Metacritic can be pretty hit an miss with it's reviews. If it's a pretty unknown game you'll get good feed back from people. If it's a huge hype game well...that's just too tempting to the bottom feeders of the internet to pass up.
Just messing around on my lunch break and looked up Destiny on Metacritc:
Playstation 4: 5.6
X Box One: 4.6
X Box 360: 4.4
Playstation 3: 3.6
Average is a 4.55.
98% of the "negative reviews" are players giving the game a 0....thats correct....0......regardless of how much this game doesn't live up to the hype, I am sure that it deservs more than a 0.
Please delete this thread lol.
The problem lies in gamers being so binary that they only give things either 10 or 0. Those scores are the majority, split almost 50/50 between 10 and 0. Very few scores are anything in between.
There are WAY more 7s and 8s than 2s and 3s...ill just say that lol.
Playing Devil's Advocate, but aren't PC gamers right to give the game a 0? There is no game for them to play, so it's a 0 for them. I feel Bungie messed up by not releasing on PC as well. Why wouldn't you want to meet the demand of your potential customer base? As I've said many times, the main reason why WoW was so successful is that you could play it on anything. Now you're going to say "Well WoW's only on PC/MAC, so why don't they have it on console" The problem there is that most console owners have a PC that can play WoW. Not all PC gamers have a console.

By that logic, Xbox owners have every right to score all Sony exclusives like uncharted as "0", and all PS owners have every right to score all Xbox exclusives like dead rising and Halo "0" as well? All PS and Xbox players have every right to score all total war and civilization entries 0?
That is one of the craziest things iv ever read on these forums...and that's the 2nd time iv said that today.....whats with full moons and forum posts :P

That argument is bonkers, this game has not been released on PC, i am a PC only gamer; have no love for any console; will never buy any console either, i have no right to review or score a console game. If this game comes out on pv, then i will score it or review it "after playing".

You just typed the biggest load on nonsense ever.
If people give it a 0 out of 10 it means they haven't played it. You know that. If you actually bought the game and played it, any game for that matter, then you'd hardly give it a zero because it would mean you didnt do any research or everything it totally broken. No professional reviewers give ZERO and it just can't happen, unless it's from a hater. So those zero scores definitely don't count.
On the other hand, if someone gives a game 10 out of 10 because they really really love it, how can you blame them for that? They bought the game and are playing it and are loving it - so it's a fair score to give, unlike zero.
If you really want the honest scores, take away all the zeros and then give an average, because even those who game it a 5 must have put some thought into it.

No, because how does that help anyone form an opinion as to wether to look further into buying the game or not. Bit of a selfish attitude to have to give it a zero because a PC gamer can't buy it. Why are PC gamer's evenr eading about a game they can't have. Move on.
Yet another game that looks much better on the ps4 with higher res and such, not that its unexpected with xbone being signicantly weaker graphical power wise (ps4 is 20-30% more powerful hardware wise, so the games are always going to look better/run at a higher res/fps on it). I dunno if I could give up a 20-30% more powerful ps4 to get a xbone for some random lame shooter exclusive, especally when every crossplatfom game (like destiny and all the others following it) will always look alot better on the ps4. I don't own neither console yet though, isin't anything on the ps4 I am intersted in really, and even less so on the xbone since its alot weaker than the ps4 is graphically, well that and I prefer the dual shock style controller to the one xbone uses. I had a x360 but got rid of it due to lack of games I'd actually buy on the console when most of them were on the pc and (usually) better versions. Got a ps3 with over 30 games and rising, mostly rpgs. Like I said most of the non-rpg games come out on pc, so don't really need em on a console.
I would of bought destiny if it was on pc, playing a first person shooter with a controller is frigging terrible compared to a pc. I won't play em on my ps3, psp or 3ds either due to the poor controls/aiming that can be done with the analog sticks. I am mostly mad as a pc gamer that most pc games will be ports of the inferior xbone versions of the games for the cross platform stuff. I only got consoles for games that never come out on pc, like jrpgs and such.
Looking at the ratings (metacritic averages the scores from various publications) destiny is pretty much a flop, mind you, if enough $$$ greeses some reviewers hands they will write a much better review than it deserves. Take the last of us for example, it was a decent game, but it was no where near as good to get a 95/100 on metacritic, the game got quite boring about halfway thru, due to the way too reused animations (mostly stealth takedowns and such using the exact same animation for every enemy of that type). I would have given The Last of Us about a 70 or so.
Biggest complaint I hear about destiny is that the game had alot of promise but the devs kinda fell thru on delivering it, it happens alot in many diffrent genres. Really don't know why these devs cannot code the games to also use a keyboard/mouse, I mean the consoles have usb ports on them, why not let us use them?
Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:
A. Proven right (if something bad happens)
or
B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)
as others have mentioned the scores on Metacritic are usually a pile of pap.. its either people who for some reason hate the game and give it a score of 0 or people who for some reason want to have babies with the game and give it a score of 10..

I'm not saying its the best ive ever played but if you like how halo works youl like destiny.
And can people please get over the console/controller hate... I'm giving headshots left and right its not our fault u suck too much to be able to use a controller effectivly ...

To me it feels like playing basketball in a wheelchair, very restrictive.

Rating numbers are arbitrary and an aggregation of numbers doesn't say anything about the product. Lots of people give 10's to everything they like which is nothing better than giving it a 0, and its the same type of person that gives games those scores. Yet you are saying that we should only trust them on their positive scores, but never on the negative scores.
If you actually want to know what people think of the game I suggest you read the user reviews. To make a long story short, lots of people think its yet another hyped up product that failed to deliver.
Iselin: And the next person who says "but it's a business, they need to make money" can just go fuck yourself.
There has always been to much discrepancy between my own personal score and what various gaming websites score games. It's no surprise to see that I believe the game is much better than what the meta critic score indicates. I had a lot of fun last night running around in Destiny. I'm not quite sure people even know how to play the game yet to tell you the truth, I know I'm still figuring things out.
it looked kinda nice frm a yutube vid i saw on a moon mission frm th beta
n besides tht one shuld nvr follo any critic site blindly after all we all have our own tastes ise it more as a guideline 2 check out if the game sounds intresting or not thn decide fer yurself

One user game the PS4 version a 0 and the Xbox One version a 10.
This article sums it up nicely: http://www.gamezone.com/originals/2014/09/09/the-user-reviews-of-destiny-are-proof-that-metacritic-needs-to-go-away

Philosophy of MMO Game Design
I ignore that. I read the comments after seeing the score. like somebody said. Most people rate either a 10 or a 0.
10 means that liked the game, and 0 mean that didnt. I want to hear the two extremes and make my mind from there.
Philosophy of MMO Game Design
Exactly.
It´s the same thing on IMDB really and why it needs to go away there too.
I have been ignoring meta critic sites for years now.
