Bad animations tend to ruin a game for me. I really enjoy smooth combat and smooth animations, so in combination it just adds to up to a very fun game to play. If I start a game and I feel choppy or my character runs left or right odd (which happens occasionally like in the game Shaiya) it just puts me off and I can't keep trying it.
I would normally say: none. Because it's usually the sum of all parts which makes me like or dislike a game. If the rest of an MMO is really good I can look over a negative, even a big one.
Something which is a big fat negative for me is a linear corridor like world with tons of instancing. Several cheaper F2P MMO's have that, most recent example for me was Dragon's Prophet.
Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!
For me it have to be Cash Shops that give any form of pay to win ability in the MMO which we sadly see more and more examples off.
After that its forced full Openworld PVP.
But a bad community, immersion breakers and having no impact in the world (boss back next week/visit etc., mobs just respawning after being killed etc) will also make me quit a game these days... I want more from a MMO for it to be interesting for me.

Sorry to go off topic, just like to mentioned that playing AA that way is possible. a little less reward but still a complete viable option, alot of people play that way.

Yeah, it's entirely possible to level just through gathering and crafting in safe zones and running trade routes. Plus, as long as there are pvp'ers in the war zones, they will eventually go to peace, and you can take advantage of peace time to run a trade pack to or from that area.
For me the worst thing about MMO's, and the reason so many are turning PvP is that developers make games so easy.
Toughen up a bit and give us some grit in our games. Have a wandering griffin wander through the low level areas gobbling up anyone that's not paying attention. Drop us into a dungeon with spikes and no conceivable way to find the exit.
The only stories I hear now are from challenging PvP or big choreographed raids. Give us back challenge at all levels in PvE games.
My friends kid me because they say I want to die, and they're right. If I play a whole night without dying then the challenge isn't great enough. The thought of starting a new MMO and going through the first who knows how many levels that every new game has with no challenge is more daunting than any end game boss.
Basically games without good pvp ruin it for me haha.. NEarly every game these days has decent PVE with crappy bolt on PVP. Hopefully over the next few years we will see more PVP based games getting released
What SINGLE game feature or game mechanic ruin an MMO for you?
The download screen...
Until the game is installed, it's a glorious epic adventure... unfortunately it rarely ever meets my expectation. So I'd have to say the download screen is the one feature that ruins an MMO for me.
Any feature of dubious game play value that is there simply to extract more money from you... it happens often in F2P games but P2P games have them too. Once I recognize that for what it is, I have a hard time enjoying the game.

Cash Shops, for me. Nothing keeps me tethered to the "real world" like cash shops. I much prefer to just log in and play, not worrying about how much this session will cost me.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR
Instancing, Instancing and Instancing.. That mechanic is a cancer and should be cut out.. MMORPG = Social, and there is NOTHING social about instancing..
Before the whiners jump in, yes you CAN group in any MMO, but when the path of least resistance is just going solo - as in, 5 mobs attack me, I wipe them out in a few seconds and now my health is regenerating in a few seconds - then grouping is a completely pointless exercise.
The gameplay in MMO's just isn't entertaining enough to keep me interested if all I'm doing is playing on my own. In comparison to single player games, MMO's have so many gameplay deficiencies to compensate for the online part that they really aren't appealing as a solo game.
I can handle just about anything else - quest grinding, mob grinding, etc - if I'm teamed with people, but alone it just gets tedious. Oddly, I have one exception to this rule and that's The Secret World. For some reason that game just hooks me in.
Yeppers, that mechanic immediately puts me off any MMO that has it. An unasked second place mention: F2P (non-freemium) titles because I already know that you have to spend money just to have the game play the way it should to begin with.

PvP
As a whole.
Always ruins balance and is a big downer for me.
Boring as hell and a very cheap route to bring it as so called "endgame"

I agree with so much here.

Heavy instancing
PVP without player loot.
No PVP
Heavy restrictions on PVP
PVP flagging

Totally agree about the non consensual part the one thing that will kill a game for me.
Winner Winner, Chicken dinner.
Why create a world then have everything instanced? What's the point, just make a lobby based game.
