About 30 of us voted on 100 games so the top (little more than) third of them are the ones we actually pretty much agreed on after compiling the numbers. I'd say it's a pretty broad spectrum of players and preferences and knowledge. It was fun to do and to see how it came out...though you all have to wait to find out. MWAHAHAHA!

Can't say I disagreed with any of the choices. I'd have to wait to see the entire list before making any true judgement on whether any particular game was ranked in a spot I disagreed with.
Considering SBFord's explanation of how the list was extrapolated I am willing to bet that the top mmos are going to be ones which have historically had the most populations and were genre influencing. A game like WoW has the potential to be number 1 since it's been the most successful western mmo of all time, and heavily influenced the genre for the last decade. At the same time, EQ could be number 1 since that's the game that influenced the specific people in charge of developing vanilla WoW.
Vanguard was one of the top 5 MMO's I've played in my 17 years MMO career.
Yes it was buggy as hell and unplayable at release. But coming back after a year, it gave me one of the most wonderful moments I ever had.
The world was huge, great looking and (nearly) open. Open Dungeons, lots of simultaneous possibilities to level (sometimes 2-3 different dungeons and up to 4-5 questing areas within a certain level range)
The combat system was great for a tab targeting system, mostly because of the possibility to walk while casting.
The crafting system (the action of crafting itself) was really good and the only one I really enjoyed crafting. Additionally it had crafting quests sending you to certain places, which is very rare nowadays.
Diplomacy was a nice idea, although I didn't use it much.
Oh dear some of the most innovative MMOs have only made the last five. So I will predict the top ten, all big sellers, big population. Big numbers means they must be the best.
What should they use to measure it? Forum comments? Somehow measure emo feelings? I am serious about this.
Well they got all the staff to vote, but how many votes each got would effect the result. Not sure each member had to vote for 35 different MMOs, but if so that would be the best way. A ranked 35.
How about doing the same for us posters but just say a top 20. Hellish to organize.
No matter how they do it we will complain and some will rant, that's a given.

Note that my list a few posts up isn't my personal top 25, but rather, what I think this top 25 will look like. Though, I think it may be DCUO over CO. Am I'm close Bill??

So my guess for the top 5: Wow, Gw2, Eso, Marvel herpes (<- MikeB), and some other one I'd not poke, like Tera or the first Gw or Eq
You're forgetting City of Heroes! (Not confirming where it'll be, but surprised no one has said anything yet!)
I always go for the underdogs, and actually CoH was the game which brought me back to the genre from the years-long hiatus (after that crptard UO I left the whole genre, even the MUDs which I've been into some 5 years, both as player and offteam builder/programmer. Heck, for a year I ditched the p'n'p as well - yep, UO was that bad for Ultima fans). CoH and later CoV were great, till this day I like Cryptic's games and look aside the mistakes they used to make simply because they've made CoH
Yeah, I really liked CoH, so I'm sure it won't make into the top 5

I did not see one innovative MMO on that list just a lot of copycats IMO. Everyone has differing opinions so give me an example of what you thought was innovative about them.
Looking forward to the next list.
BTW that will be really hard on Vanguard and Shadowbane as they were some of the biggest copycats made.
The only thing worse than a developer that cant produce good games (looking at you Derek Smart), is a developer than can produce amazing games and then fook them up royally. Top of that list for me is Brad Mcquaid and Richard Garriott.
They gave us amazing games and then destroyed them with their greed and or ego, to me that is far worse than just putting out a shite product.

It would be real tough to make a case for any game besides WoW and EQ in the top 2 slots. UO better be not far off.
But knowing this site they will probably put Rift in the top 10 above superior games like AC or even EQ2.
Also they will rank FFXIV above FFXI.

30 is compiled of who , as this site seems very biased on its reviews let alone voting for GOAT, really cant take it very seriously as there most likely will be an agenda
If WoW finishes in top 3, this article is void.
EQ1, DaoC, UO are genre defining games that should be top 3.
I wouldn't agree with that assessment with the exception of EQ. EQ heavily influenced WoW, which in turn has completely changed the genre for the past decade. EQ was truly the first "rock star" mmo as it was referenced in other media as well; TV and movies to be specific.
UO's only true claim to fame was that it was the first mmo with a recognizable IP. The Ultima series was a well regarded and much beloved series of games. However, UO was not genre defining by any stretch of the imagination. UO didn't spawn a bunch of 2d isometric mmos, and not many other games took what UO did and improved upon it. EQ was far more influential than UO ever was.
DAoC is iffy. The only true claim to fame for DAoC is the RvR system. RvR did indeed show that there was a true market for pvp in mmos. However, that was about it. Ironically, other mmos that have attempted a DAoC-esque RvR system pretty much all had people from Mythic involved in their development. I think it's also safe to say that the DAoC RvR system has yet to be replicated in a way where the "masses" really ooo and ahh over it.
However, based on the criteria of genre influencing games, WoW should absolutely be number 1. No other mmo in history has had as much influence. Doesn't really matter if the influence was good or bad, since that is completely subjective. Objectively, no other mmo in history has changed the genre more than WoW.
I say this without ever having played EQ, ever. I only briefly delved into UO in my younger years. I played DAoC right up until ToA, then I revisited the game a few times over the years. I did play WoW for about 8-9 years solid, and I tried numerous other mmos during the last decade. I haven't played WoW in quite a while though. I think I only lasted in WoD for two months before unsubbing. I didn't sub for the majority of MoP either.
People can hate on WoW all they want, but to deny that WoW has been an extremely influential force in the genre is ignorance.
