As I see it is gender locking fine if it gives me twice the number of classes to play but far too many gender locked games have few classes and a very limited wardrobe anyways. I rather have 12 gender locked classes instead of 6 regular but I do enjoy character customization so I would even more like 12 open classes.
Take Teras brawler, there isn't really that many different looking armors in the game and the reason to genderlock characters is mainly that you only have to make half as many clothes so I don't really see whay it is genderlocked and I certainly don't see any practical reason to lock the race as well.
As for me I don't care that much in most games, it is not like I do flirt with other players in a MMO anyways, that is just sad.

Not being able to change the gender of classes really limits the diversity of the game. Allowing at least certain classes to be both genders can be OK, like Archer and Wizard or whatever the names are, that should be OK.
Do people even realize that some of the gender locked stuff are even varying races? Like the Berzerker is a giant race (giant's are predominately male almost to the point that 98% of things with giants are only featuring them as a male race). Archers are female elves and while elves have been written into fantasy lore as both male and female the elven female archers are known to be the top of their game in some lores. There are several human classes and while yes the elves and humans could be not gender locked if we base it around reality at all they kind of would be.
People seem to take the lore completely out of game worlds when talking about this sort of things. They adopted many European centric things that are at least semi accurate in depictions to use in BDO.... Warriors unless found in a very rare mercenary band that employed a female at all where men, valkyries where female only things etc etc etc. The are locking classes both race / gender wise and making lore reasons for them not just writing it off as something they are doing.
They've also listened heavily to the community at large and implemented variations (yes they differ) for the same type of "role". And that actually is way more work than simply offering the same class with a different gender. They are doing class specific armors for each and every class they make, making each class look unique in the process and writing up lore for each class, putting in animations for each class. They are literally putting in a TON of extra work in the way they are doing classes/races together... So the people saying they are lazy make me chuckle or people saying it hurts diversity as it is going to make the game more diverse over time.
And to the person that said wizard = sorceress noooo nnnnooooooooooooooo nooooooooooo (Consuela from family guy voice) Wizard is the male counter part to witch (and they do differ slightly and aren't direct mirror with how they play if you actually look up the differences). Sorceress is a dark magic user that is a mix of melee (dark magic melee ranged claws) and ranged. Sorceress is HELLISHLY fun, but then so are most of the classes in the game thus far. My friend had a blast with summoner (speedy agile class high dexterity and the like)

Point obviously is less design hassle and faster development. On players' side of course more choice is good, but from a development viewpoint there are very valid reasons to go for gender/weapon/race locking. Saves them a crapload of work.

Maybe lore is important the the creators? Do you despise games like the witcher series because you are forced to play Geralt? MMORPG's are still at their very core RPG games and just because it's scaled up player base wise doesn't take the RPG element out of it. Just because many MMORPGs are lazy with writing any sort of character development for differing classes (most just rush you to end game anymore and damned the lore til then) doesn't mean you can't have good character development based around your class choice.

Go look at a pair of gauntlets in a game where they look 4 - 6 sizes to large around the wrist or are not really 3d at all but just bulks up in sports and painted a specific texture vs actually having armor that looks more realistic to any extent.

I prefer to get into the role or persona of my toon/ avatar. I use it as a vessel of me. I have played many female characters in MMO's because I wanted to play the class and it was gender locked. Unfortunately because of this, I never really get attached to the character and lose interest to the game. Every time a developer chooses to gender lock classes, I immediately know I will only play the game for a few months, then never again.

Yeah, they're totally going for that unique feel to each class -- certainly they couldn't have simply relied on gameplay mechanics to achieve that. I can't say it says much for the game overall when they're factoring in gender as a unique class feature.
It's cool that apparently in your eyes all it takes to give off a "unique" feel is to give less options to the player.
But whatevs, we're not going to be agreeing on this at any point, and I won't be playing BDO. Is what it is.
I think having the choice of gender is clearly a superior option.
That said, I've personally no problem playing female characters.
My preferred characters are usually monster races, generally male since those tend to be somewhat more monstrous with some exceptions. As such identifying with my character isn't really something I'm looking for.
When monster races aren't available I often go with a female character as they tend to look somewhat more interesting. Say what you want about female armour in MMOs, I completely agree on a lot of criticism, all the same there tends to be a lot more variety to female outfits where male outfits, especially for warrior classes, are often basically the same suit of full plate over and over again.

Gender locking is such a crock. I want to play a character that I have thought up not someone else's idea. I never enjoy games that force me to be one gender or race. And the reasoning being "lore" based gets flushed once you make it an MMO and allow names that don't fit lore.
I'm male but I've played female toons in games that are not gender locked class,AND, I have fun cre8n her and playing as her. So, as my conclusion, it doesn't matter. What matters to me is the game. PERIOD. Game on Gamers!

I'm not a fan of any type of locking, much less gender locking. I don't like the fact that my Necromancer in AoC can't have a two handed sword if I want. I can't stand that if I pick up a really cool social item in a game, then it gets locked to my character with magic superglue.
Games should be moving away from limitations, not imposing more of them, and silly ones at that. Why in the world can't I play a male ranger in BDO? This new fad of gender locking in games is really weird and awkward.
I guess this is one of the reasons that not many games can drag me away from EVE. It has a fraction of the limitations that most games impose. Freedom is king in EVE.
As a male i mostly play female characters. Eye candy. For instance, every rpg and mmo that has a mage class i always play a female character. I don't care to see a male in a robe or something close to a dress. sorry just me. But this is mostly for casting classes. My first class in games are magic ones. All other classes i play both male and female.
I have to agree if the lore dictates it as some have pointed out above there is nothing wrong with it. On the other hand so many of these eastern MMO's do it indiscriminately as in Black Desert. Just another nail in Black Desert's coffin and a major reason why many won't play it.
Really doesn't bother me. I am a heterosexual man who is happy to love women. So I don't care what gender I play as in a game, after all it has no bearing on what I am like in real life.
I generally prefer to play female characters, but I don't have an issue playing a dude if need be. As you said, I'm playing the character, not the gender, and as long as the game is good enough then I'm happy enough.
As for MMO's, I get why some genderlock classes, especially Eastern MMO's with far more elaborate animations. It's disappointing for folks who for some reason find themselves unable to play characters of the gender they don't prefer (whichever it is), but that's the reality of business.
In the end, all the character creation time you spend is wasted since you don't spend your time looking at what you created. You are concentrating on what you are doing in the world, and less on your character's looks.

I've never played a male character in a MMO.
If I am going to be staring at my characters behind for countless hours might as well enjoy it.
