Damn shame. Never liked Wildstar but lots of good talent got let go
I disagree. The game is bad. It always was bad. It's better that it fails so nobody will want to make another game like it.
Maybe they should do that to Blade and Soul and ArcheAge. Those are both bad and deserve to be shut down after you spend a bunch of money on them. Should I laugh when they do?
I mean why would you even say something like that? Can't you just accept that you don't like the game, but some other people do? Why do mmo players feel the need to shit all over every game around and revel in its struggles. Please do remember that when your game is up next.
My game (Blade and Soul) is not up next because my game doesn't suck.
You're right though they should shut down Archeage for sure.
I don't think neither B&S, Nor AA should be shut down. Game like BDO that encourages solo play and restrict RMT TRADING in mmo environment on the other hand should go fuck themselves.
Fixed that for you. You can still trade in BDO, but the company actively restricts the abilities of RMT companies to operate, unlike a couple of other games you just mentioned.
There's still a very small chance that WildStar enters maintenance mode and keeps cruising along with absolute minimal support.
There are a dozen games out there still running like this, no reason why WildStar couldn't be one of them unless the player base is really that critically low.
As a Wildstar Dominion player I think it is that low. I went back a few months ago after it went FTP and most zones are practically empty. If I'm not in the main city I see less than half dozen players a session. Why just last Thursday I had my first instance of teaming up with someone when I was level 46! I'd love for it to be put in maintenance mode and pay a $5/month fee to keep it going, but not even that would be enough to pay for the necessary servers and personnel. Right now I just want to get through the main content before it's sinks. But with the latest news, I wonder how motivated I'll be to do it.
I don't think it is fair to describe Wildstar as crap that sticks. There is a lot of passion in the game if you have played it from the tiny details of Sci Fi writers and paying homage to them in various lore and even in the lines of conversation . Also homage to the wild west. There was love in the art style and also in how some of the interior of buildings were done and some areas were positively gorgeous!. The music in Celestion was hauntingly beautiful.
Of course you would have missed all that if you never bothered to read the bits of data you collected from the magazines to data pads with amusing definitions and stories in them. I guess people with no patience to read or look at what they have can never truly get what effort and thought was put into the game.
Just because some of you did not like the art style it is truly unkind of you to describe the work put into the game as crap.
I don't think it was just the Art style that was Wildstars problem, it was just one of them, throw in the combat mechanics, etc. and the size of the potential playerbase is reduced, which is fine for niche games, but Wildstar didn't really do anything that well that it would occupy a niche that wasn't already dominated by other games. It wasn't a 'crap' game, it was undoubtedly a well made game, but that it was the 'wrong game' for what they were trying to achieve is probably more accurate.
"Every mmorpg shut down may send a sign to the suits. Every mmorpg getting shut down may even make some guy hesitant to kickstart another indie-mmorpg with his 5$."
Wildstar was no indie startup. It was a game with like 100 million in funding with well-known Devs.
In the end, these things are games. Just because they're made doesn't give them some divine right to exist and go on forever. Games come and go all the time. And bad ones should GO.
Wildstar has been live for about 2 years. And it sucks. Hard. How long are bad MMOs supposed to go on for?
I agree @Phry I myself disliked the combat and eventually forced me to give the game up. But some people post like this game was made with no thought to quality and that it was just some crap that was made and I find myself in violent disagreement with that view.
Damn shame. Never liked Wildstar but lots of good talent got let go

I enjoy games where I'm not forced to play with a bunch of sniveling douchebags. I'm perfectly happy playing with the same handful of friends I've been playing with for years. I don't enjoy hearing the latest dank memes in a random instance group. I don't care about wiping to stupid shit, but I bet the random LFG group will flip the fuck out. And when things go well nobody says a goddamn word to each other. Meh, "social" interaction in MMO's is way overrated.
The short while I did play It looked like Wildstar had some great mechanics for making some outstanding raid content. Just watching some of the raids on Youtube they actually used their design well.
Even though I had/have no intention of playing a raiding game, I kind of wish it did better. They had a coherent goals in the game, designed the game with great supporting mechanics, and actually followed through.
All in all I don't think Wildstar really deserves to be slapped down like some MMO clone that just strapped on designs and mechanics like other MMOs have done to get the title MMORPG.
Practice doesn't make perfect, practice makes permanent.

You have never played in a a good mature guild, once you do you will understand that social interaction is everything.
The reason why majority stick with games for years is because of strong social guilds.

Well that's pretty bad. I can't imagine a game with this amount of production and effort would tank so badly.
You bring up an interesting point with the $5 a month part. One of the reasons that AoC is still around to this day is because all of the raids past the first tier are locked behind a subscription. Everyone still raiding to this day is paying $15 a month.
Unless there's a similar pay wall, and I'm not sure if there is or not cause I didn't go back for F2P, then WildStar might have to close it's doors. Which would be bad for the MMO genre.

There are more douchebags in real life than game, do you think of committing suicide to avoid them? Ok i guess that was out of line, let's talk about my experience in AA, i started playing it seriously for about 3 and half months now, so basically my gears are crap, most of them are drops from level 35 dungeons or questing.
People saw me running around in pvp events trying my best with the shit gear i had, so they started sending me and trading me gears they did not use anymore or they got while grinding greater dungeons, even the local douchebag of my current server sent me several arcane quality gears that boosted my gearscore by 200, thanks to their help i got myself to 3K gearscore, still crap but i was not totally useless and my heals were doing better. Then one of them told me that it was still not enough and just handed over all of his grinding gear sets that he uses for archery, sorcery and defense based builds, boosting my gear score to near 4K. He invited me to guild and made all of his lands shared to guild so that i can use them to make aged packs, he even gave me lots of mats and other stuff so that i could make my wagon.
Now you tell me, that experience above i have had, in a game that so many here hate and want it to die, can this situation be experienced by any player of BDO, the game seemed to be so many in love with because there is no gold seller?
Boobs are LIFE, Boobs are LOVE, Boobs are JUSTICE, Boobs are mankind's HOPES and DREAMS. People who complain about boobs have lost their humanity.
The game failing like this is some what surprising. From what i have heard alot of the devs were from WOW vanilla. So there was a lot of hype for this game because of that. I played the game and liked it but not my cup of tea. NC soft has been trying to dethrone WOW for ever now. But they have not made a game that can out gross lineage1. Lineage 1 is still their number 1 money maker and the game came out in 1998. They may be taking their time with Lineage eternal because this. They want this game to replace lineage 1 as there top money maker. If lineage eternal fails NCsoft will be in serious trouble.

I believe they won't have another big success as Lineage 1 because since WoW made big success, every single developer lost the balls to make something old school as L1 again. Lineage Eternal which is supposed to be the sequel to Lineage 1 looks like an attempt to allure every single kind of player, even mobile players; and as far as I know, it doesn't work out so well.

I ignore and avoid douchebags IRL as well. I don't like large guilds and generally avoid random players in MMORPG's. Sometimes our group may pick up one or two new people along the way, but I don't go out of my way to meet new players.
I don't see why it couldn't happen in BDO. Maybe they notice you're out roaming alone. They might not be able to give you gear, but maybe you'll get invited to go roam and PVP with them.
I think that part of the problem with this game from conception is they just did not understand their target market. They over-estimated its size drastically.
Then there seemed odd design choices from the get-go: It always seemed obvious to me that a hardcore crowd and cartoony graphics just don't fit. And that intensive hardcore gameplay and long play sessions doesn't work well with repetitive but concentration-heavy combat; it is just exhausting rather than fun.
It took a dying mechanic, namely large scale raids, that were being scaled back in popular titles, and made them the focus of the game.
It ignored the advances in pathing and quests in other games, and rehashed something ten years out of date. And then it tried to replace any real soul or personality with seizure-inducing text flashing all over your screen.
This game was so clearly a mistake from conception. This news is a shame, but when a firm misunderstands their target market to this extent, they are doomed to failure.
You can't say "we are canceling plans for China" but then say "we are committed to the game". Those are just opposing statements. You're committed to the current game, and when it comes to further development it all hinges on how Steam and the now small Dev team manage to make any money. But I guess you can't say "we don't have faith in his game, so we are going to milk it for a while."
Anyway, sad day for Carbine and for EQN.
You know a lot more about this to me. But, couldn't they mean that they are committed to making the best game possible for the existing players? Localization to china seems like a luxury at this point.
But yes, the game is clearly on maintenance mode, just like LOTRO was after Moria. They'll deliver small content updates over time to milk the population. But is that the wrong decision at this point? What can Carbine do to get people to play it? I think there comes a time to accept that you didn't release a game the masses wanted to play.
I think a post mortum on the game would be very interesting.

It also looked as if they had no plan B at all. When hardcore raids didn't work out, they had no idea in which direction to go.
Also, Carbine somehow didn't get the idea that people would probably not stick to two raids forever -but every other concept except for housing and lore was way underdeveloped. Alts, small group content, crafting, dungeons..everything was either broken, lacking or not worth it.
I guess that until today the dungeon finder only allows to queue for one activity at a time.
I love the game anyway and found my own personal way to take on it and enjoy my time. I haven't been this attached to my ingame character, interested in the lore and NPC's personal stories since i played my first character in WoW. I'm kind of sad to see it go.
I was going to try the game until i found out it wasn't tab target i was surprised when it turned out to be action comnbat i was hoping it to be like wow which some people don't seem to want but i don't mind.

The mmo genre is in a really bad place all around. Its just to costly to make them then they turn out to be only niche games. Its not really surprising that AAA companies are giving up on them.

Sure but then after a while we go "bye bye, see you never", something we have never seen in any game that boasted to be "sandbox" and always see in so called insta-gratification carebear themepark games. But i guess there is always 1st for everything.
