The facebook link was taken down. He was playing a zombie game and they are coming at him from every direction. You see in the captions he ran out of bullets so he is using weapons to kill them. And he is 81 years old. Honestly this makes me want to buy one right now.
Gramp's more aggressive than Mayweather. Lol. Seriously, though, I want to know how the old man felt after using the VR. I heard it often causes nausea.
With a little tweaking and some innovative ideas this could be the thing that explodes the market. The hard part is the movement of course. But imagine Skyrim on VR where you are using hands to cast spells and swing the sword and put the shield up to block. Or imagine playing a game like Overwatch on this.
Agreed. First order of business should be to find a way to get rid of those hand thingies. It's not hard to imagine a scenario where you're so engrossed in the game that you actually throw them hard into the wall or worse, your TV screen / monitor. Lol.
The problem is, and for the foreseeable future will remain... movement. yeah it's great if you are standing still, but even in this clip you see gandpa almost punch through a window. So yeah.. Skyrim? You just gonna stand still and hit a button to walk but move your arms?
I see this more applicable to vehicle type games where you are supposed to be stationary (butt in seat).

nausea is created by a few factors of which the developer can avoid if the hardware can keep up. That said those who are naturally prone to nausea might get nausea regardless.
there is such a thing in VR as bad developer design which can cause nausea

Yea I'd say if you are prone to seasickness then this will probably not be for you. My grandmother actually got seasick by walking on the pier during rough seas.
Is it amusing to watch an old flail about for 30 seconds? Yes, yes it is. Would it continue to be amusing 20 minutes later? 3 hours later? No.
I will maintain that the game or viewing experience has to be at a level, such that it outvalues the comfort and ease of use of traditional gaming/viewing methods. The game looked hugely uninteresting, so what does it say about VR when the most entertaining part of it is watching someone acting silly rather than using it yourself?

Ok I guess you didn't pay attention. You notice the guy has real life zombies walking towards him from all different directions. He's using a weapon in both hands to kill the zombies. So now the old man swinging his arms about actually makes more sense. If you add blocking and replace the zombies with ninja's or samarai warriors. It doesn't hurt to use a little imagination here.

Yeah, I have eyes, I got it. And if I imagine a better game in place of a worse game, then it's better?
I don't care what VR's "potential" is, this is the same silly thinking that people employ when fantasizing about kickstarter games. They imagine how great it *can* be and get excited over something that only exists in their heads. Can they make some awesome game using ninjas or Star Wars or pirates fighting ninjas with lightsabers while riding dinosaurs? Maybe. Sure. Will they and will it be good though? That's the question. I can imagine anything I want based on what I consider to be the potential for VR, but until it happens, VR is basically an old guy waving about.

You are the guy who looked at pong in the 70's and called it garbage. Even though it started all of what we have today.
The problem is, and for the foreseeable future will remain... movement. yeah it's great if you are standing still, but even in this clip you see gandpa almost punch through a window. So yeah.. Skyrim? You just gonna stand still and hit a button to walk but move your arms?

I see people say this every day. and i can honestly say these are people that do not own the retail versions of vive or rift.
Movment is not an issue. playing farlands or even fallout with vorpx. farlands uses teleporting once you get past the length of your cords. YES CV1 does has room scale you can walk around with your rift. the blind spot is only when backwards and bending down. which is easily fixed by placing your camera higher.
and in fallout kb mouse is fine. i am sorry but movement does NOT matter at all. all that will happen is same that happend with the WII. first everyone is up and moving and its great. then you just play from your couch. locomotion in VR is just a gimmic. it is not needed at all.
Finally for MMO and mass market. bring back RFO online. people dont move when piloting a mech.. so there is the answer for all the "realizim" people.
As for motion sickness. i can tell you this is just people having bad PD setups in the helmet. ironically most people do not have symetrical PDs. if HTC and occulus want to stop that issue they need each eye to have independent PDs. on top of that 75% of the population has worse enough eye sight that they need corrective glasses. yet i could gurentee that those people are not 100% of the time wearing glasses or contacts while in VR.
So the mix of bad PD and no Rx leads to headaches and nausea . this is even true without a vr helmet on. i do this every day to the new people in my lab.
a bad PD is equivalent to adding prism to the wearers eyes. the eye is fighting to correct for the prism and gets fatigued.
and for the movment not syncing with your inner ear. thats easy fix with those wrist bands for sea sickness.
The various things people have said about VR over the past year has been down right hysterical. I think my favorite or at least close to it is 'my neck will break if I move my head'
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
Yea half the world is using it must be something wrong.
Lol, not even close. Anywho looks like the party is coming to an end.
"Facebook has spread like an infectious disease but we are slowly becoming immune to its attractions, and the platform will be largely abandoned by 2017, say researchers at Princeton University"
Won't be impacting my life as I've never felt the need to sign up with this shit.

No, I wasn't alive in the 70's so I didn't say anything about pong.
And again, for the millionth record, I don't think VR is garbage nor do I want to see it fail, I simply have little faith in developers overcoming it's downsides to make it a more attractive option than traditional displays.
VR wants me to dedicate two of my senses to it, wear something on my face, ignore things like my dog/wife/etc, and possibly have a sore neck if I use it too long.
Those are pretty big asks for what's on offer. Therefore, VR has to deliver an experience much greater than it's traditional counterparts can. You can't just give me a sad zombie game, that's not enough. I think VR can do it, but it needs developers who want to and are capable of executing it. If no one steps up, then VR will just be 3D TV, if they do step up I'll be there with bells on.
Yea half the world is using it must be something wrong.

Those researchers will eat their own words. And hopefully not research anything for any gaming company or we are doomed to a bunch of crappy games. You realize we are 6 months away from 2017.

Well the problem with a study like that is that it doesn't take into account unknown upgrades/additions which FB has been implementing in the last two years.
However, sharing is down again in 2016, 15% in original broadcast content and about 6% in personal sharing. The population that uses FB is also getting older while younger users prefer other platforms. The bad news is that FB as a platform will be around for a while longer, but FB as a company is in a much stronger place than it used to be. I still hate FB though.
Yea half the world is using it must be something wrong.
Yeah, like smoking. If so many people are doing it, it can't be bad.
Except noone who uses facebook died because of it. You really are getting desperate. I bet you refuse to use windows and talk about how mac is better then pc.
Go play Red Steel 2 if you have a wii it has one of the best combats.
If the wii was capable of making a game with directional combat, blocking and have movesets while being able to move in the world I don't see how a vr is incapable of doing it. It doesn't need to be combat 24/7.
