What's with the AdBlock Notice?

Hey guys,

Those of you running adblock will notice an interstitial page appearing on the main site asking you to consider whitelisting us. We wanted to get ahead of the questions and let you know that this page can be dismissed after 10 seconds and will only show up once per session. This page will also show up on the forums at some point, though it currently does not.

Screencap of the page:

If you still have any questions regarding this change, feel free to post them in this thread.

Attempting to annoy users to the point that they disable the ad-blocker is kind of a shitty thing to do, no?

With the level of traffic on this site there is plenty of ad revenue to be made, and I'm sure that the site is doing quite well in that regard. Trying to get those of us using an ad-blocker to remove it by adding a mild annoyance that serves no purpose other than to annoy, seems ridiculous.

We wouldn't be doing this unless we felt it were necessary. We've been very committed to preserving the user experience since the site's inception, which is reflected in our strict advertising policy, so no we aren't just doing this to annoy anyone.

I run adblockerplus and got this pop up.  Very annoying and couldn't see anyway to close it btw.  Turned it off for mmorpg and will try it like this for awhile if it gets too annoying well..... might just add this site to the DNGT list like forbes.

Well, hate to say this once again.  I don't run adblock to stop ads but to protect my system.  You have had issues with ads before therefore...

But, sometimes when I'm changing pages in a thread it throws me to a game site for no reason. I hope it's a glitch and gets fixed.
I'll bring this up again to our web guy.

Awesome, free service has people that do this as full time jobs for our enjoyment. Time to pony up and support them. If you dont see that I feel bad for you. Life is not free. Keep up the great work mmorpg.com staff.

I use ad block but I turned it off for this domain the same way I do with my favorite youtubers or content creators: I like their work and want to support it.

Same thing happens to me. The other day I was clicking on page 1 of a multi-page thread and kept being redirected to the Riders of Icarus site.

Meh time to find another side for mmorpg news. Ads are the cancer of this age, I understand its necessity but can't agree with having it forced upon me.

Annoying users with something like this is a shitty thing to do... it's up to me (or anyone els for that matter) to use adblock if they want. Why should our experience on a site be worse just because of that? Maybe if your ads weren't so intrusive people wouldn't use adblock...

I dont block everything here. I only block sexually-oriented advertisements. Im Christian (Roman Catholic), and if you cant keep your website's content decent for at least 8 year olds, thats your problem that I block certain advertisements that are sexually explicit. Everything else is fine.

Especially adverts of League of Angels. They border on porn.

Argh... I have your daft ads on display and my ABP on but you still feel the need to annoy me with that popup notice. *grmbl* There are less intrusive ways to plead your case to your members than pop-ups. Funnily enough it's usually the reason why most people block things, them being so intrusive.

Adblock, the thing that is to block ads, yet it fails to block notification that tell the user to not use it! The irony...I'm sure adblock eventually will take care of this as more desperate sites get more desperate to find any way to harass their visitors.

Because I still am part of MMORPG.com I care for it enough to comment and say that this was a poor decision. You want to ensure the traffic that comes here is as pleased and happy as possible. Doing anything else will only bury it further down the hole.

[mod edit: keep it civil] If you do care as you say, then you should be whitelisting this site. There is no greater way you can show your support. Put your money where your mouth is.

Just so you know, with ad blockers you can r-click on the "You're using an ad blocker!" notice and add it to the block list.

You guys really do not understand business at all do you? People will use a different site before they disable addblock for some Faux news site, I mean come on do you think you guys are gods of the gaming news on the net or something?

Plenty of sites that dont harass users for spare change and or forcefully change their page. Find another way to generate profit for your site (like more paid articles and game previews, you know actual work that you would get paid for) or watch your site whither and die.

Well, here's a thought, and to play devil's advocate, if a person uses adblock then aren't they "not" being counted and adding to the "clicks" for the advertisers?

So it's as if they have gone to another site.

That is why I don't go to forbes.com and a couple of other places as well.
