Why are people acting like it's the end of GW2?

Nothing is suggesting that. Where I work we just let a load of people go, it's business. They were not needed but the business is still doing great. Now that ArenaNet have let people go, or are going to soon, their profits will go 'up' not down. Unless, of course, all the players jump ship in this latest doom and gloom scenario.

Seriously, what is wrong with you lot? It's either all good or all bad for you. There's a LOT of space in between you know...
I don't see too many people spelling the end of GW2 I think it is painful to see a company with only two games flounder to make a third.
Not on this post, yet, but across the other ones there's plenty doing it.
End of GW2? Not immediately, but they now own the NCSoft coveted spot for lowest performer. That never ever has worked well at NC for the bottom player. Probably not the end of the game at all, but could be the end of ANet as it's formed now if they don't get their act together. Reacting with ambivalence and 'business as usual' is probably the most self-destructive course the industry could take right now.

I'm not predicting demise. I am saying they should be worried like that and taking action accordingly.
    Battle Royale mode for GW2?

I joke but I'd actually play it lol. I'd like to see someone have a good crack at an RPG Battle Royale instead of just first or third person shooters.
You do know that Guild Wars 2 had quite possibly the first battle royale mode (Southsun Survival), right? And if we count the one-time beta events, Guild Wars 2 had battle royale experiences a couple years earlier than that, and on quite possibly the largest number of players of any battle royale.

I do remember that from the beta now that you mention it but it was a bit of a train wreak, at least for me. I had no idea what was going on lol. The server issues and performance didn't help either.

The enemies attacking Divinity's Reach too... that was crazy. Absolutely bombed my computer but it was fun as hell.

Man, they shouldn't have dropped that kind of stuff...
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Well, just my 2 cents, I'm willing to bet Anet probably have 4 projects, of course I don't have anything to back that up. I believe they have 1 BR , 2 mobile, and of course our favo GW3. Unlike WoW, Anet don't have the dollars to spend on all 4 to make it work, not in 2019 anyway, where the economy is going to hell. All this down turning is due to globe power at work, yes politic will effect us in lot of unseen ways. That and the fact game companies are all aboard the unsustainable unlimited growth of trendy games like fortnite successful wave had cause the greedy green eye to rise up and taking over the gaming industry as we know it. Remember, those useless marketing ppl only good at doing short term gain/fast turn over but burn or at least set things on fire when they exit.

Mean while my thoughts on GW2 is an ok experience, there are 2 things that held GW2 back for me, one low char poly count, given its current state is way out of data. On the other hand, if GW2 had Black Desert char model O_O, I'm willing to bet ppl WILL play this game just for that alone. As they say pretty girl get all the glory if you ask most men opinions? Reason why BDO is still around is for vanity of course, not like the story or game play is the heart of BDO. Ask for most of GW2's pay cosmetic is not impressive enough for ppl to spend more money due to the low poly count and char slot. Not like grinding for years to get enough gold exchange get enough vanity point to keep the players interested for too long, the exchange rate is too low and long for pay off for most ppl. Again game companies forget, player can only play one game at a time, if they are not in your game then they are in other more cost efficient games.

The fact is vanity is a thing in human desire and saying its ok for game companies to charge more money for it is, well of course an unpopular idea. When was looking sexy or badass was the least favorite things for ppl wanting to get into any game for? So charging a lot for vanity in game just for an unlock is counter desirable trait, did I mention lack of char slots? LMAO for the life of me, a game have butt load of lords and race then lock them behind a pay wall, well again dumb idea imo. As I always say, small char slot = smaller time investment = get bored faster than rolling bolder down hill. My whole point is time investment, even we gamers got to have a return on our time investment? So our reward is pay more for char slots? That guy came up with that idea is as dumb as a bolder, if anything you want to give MORE slots of every kind = more invested into your product, it marketing 101 man, not rocket science?

Point 2 is well of course its the loots, well more precisely, the bag system. Again RPG is mostly about vanity and loots is the core design, is what really sell for the most part of any given game. Again bag/inventory space for sales? Thus force ppl to spending MORE money just to get a real enjoyable playing experience on just a merely an unlock for a game is no doubt another dumb idea in a loot game. Looking good and bag full of loots is the heart and soul for most games, sure we got Story and such but its really the looks and loots get ppl playing. IF those 2 things are limited by money well, most will invents into something more worth while with better investment returns.

Most mmorpg don't live very long are due to greedy dumb ideas like character slots and bag space limit the life for games in general. Remember, we don't just have one char in most MMORPG, therefore, the real cost for any one game will greatly exceed the $60. What worst, the idea that game companies aim to have gamers paying $600 instead of $60 is well, asking for way too much for far too little return, would you game companies willing to trade 10 million for 10,000? Yeah, most would not.

While mass lay off in any sector is never a good sign for anyone, we will run into the conundrum of the ppl lack of money to buy goods thus, less ppl buying even less goods, which mean less profit for any companies = more lay off = more conundrum of everything going less = unlit nothing is left. So all this mass lay off of recent time it showing a collapse of the century is heading our way. SO with the super AI and or industrial 2nd revolution will either kills all or save us, hard times is here, let hope for better and I'm wrong, while the gaming industry in on lit on fire I guess.

NCSoft is pretty ruthless with IPs that under perform.

Who knows what could potentially happen, but I hope that ANet gets away from them before something like that happens.

NCsoft owns ArenaNet so to do that ArenaNet would have to buy themselves from NCsoft.

Few problems with that though, judging by the financials ArenaNet doesnt have the money and Paragon tried to do that when CoH was cancelled and NCsoft turned them down.

So, ArenaNet is stuck with NCsoft until the end.

Let's just wait and see. The game develops not so bad currently and though I miss a third expansion (water dragon, underwater mounts, additional race or class is always a hook to bring old fans back) I strongly believe we will see that stuff in the future.

Nearly 400 people is too much for just one game. Perhaps the layoffs only affect the crew not finishing those other possible projects. When I lock on, GW2 is still crowded everywhere I go, even in the HoT ares. Can't be that bad with their prime game. So let's just wait and see.

I don't see any possible scenario for them to escape that. Primarily because the Eastern gaming market's terrible taste in games and excessive ingame spending habits will ensure that NCSoft's high-earners will be its eastern MMOs and mobile games.

But history also shows that Anet gets favorable treatment, possibly down to contractual terms at the time of their partnership with NCSoft. Realistically, there should be no reason why Guild Wars 1 has been kept running for this long past its prime, even on maintenance mode. Had this been any other developer under NCSoft's eye, Guild Wars 1 would be f2p or shuttered.
I remember discussions about them retaining a level of control and having escape clauses/options from their relationship with NC. I think it boils down to a time when NC would want to shut them or their games down and they have the option to buy themselves out, or something close to that. I know it's not as simple as shaking hands and going their separate ways, but unless things have changed they supposedly have options out.

Also, if GW1 ever closed I'd work on setting up a private server at home. Because even though I don't think that code is available now, it would be in that event. It always is especially in that scenario. I'll do the same with LotRO when it comes to that point too. I could easily be happy playing both single player or with a couple family members and friends.
Isn't Arenanet a wholly owned subsidiary of NCSoft?

I really appreciate that they don't run out new games all the time like some others do. But when income is falling after 7 years it's perhaps time to invest in a new game. Could create a different type of game and still focus on GW as the only mmorpg.

To be fair, behind the scenes ANet has tried and failed many times to make a different game. Why have none come out of it? That's probably more complicated. But there's a reason only one founder is left from the core.
If you're a game company and you try and fail that many times at MAKING a game...

Then you are within the realm of normal actually.

Making games is an art.  Not something we have reduced to a science yet.  So success really only means you learned something about how to make the type of game that you had success with.  It's not indicator that if you try something different it will work.  You might have people that can do it again, or you might have just gotten lucky.  You don't know because nobody can define what makes a successful game with any accuracy.

It is kind of silly, they really shouldn't be throwing all of their revenue eggs in the gw2 basket.  It might be their best bet at making money today, but obviously it isn't making enough, they need to bring in new content.

I don't think the Guild Wars IP would ever go the way of Wildstar. It's recognized and valuable in a way their other western closures (Wildstar, CoH, AutoAssault, Dungeon Runners, etc - long list) haven't been. It could be sold or reused, but I don't see snuffed out happening.

Selling it might actually be a good move. I'd love to see it in the hands of a studio passionate about the original game.

I dunno Torv , its value is slipping now they have less staff , if next year they slip below Aion , GW2 will find itself in real trouble with NCsoft , and they would have no problem shutting GW2 down if its not making there mark..

They need to do something big this year imo , but with nothing on the horizon BIG and less staff , i'm not sure what that could be at this point ..

Maybe F2P and expand the cash shop with more cosmetics

Even though Im currently not playing Guild Wars 2 (due to issues I take with the GW2 moderation team and the lack of response Ive received after lobbying to file a complaint for being treated unfairly for the last damn time...), I am not willing to throw in the towel for the game just yet. Has it been seven years? Its a good game, has a lot going for it, and one of the few MMOs that is still around. MMOs are a dying breed. The fact that GW2 has lasted this long is a testament. And I think that Arenanet still has some tricks of their sleeves.

Maybe ONE more expansion, or another season or two of LS (even though I don't like LS)...and we can call it complete. Honestly, even mighty WoW is falling apart at the seams. No one wants the pure MMO experience anymore. Oh sure, you can make the arguement for the marginal percentage, but MMOs are not selling and failing by the dozens each year.

The markets that I think are growing: Battle Royale (sadly), ARPGs and shooter looters. If arenanet were to try to put the guild wars IP into maybe a more ARPG format like Path of Exile...now Id love to see that.

tldr; MMOs are dying, if not already dead. Gw2 has done great by clinging to life for this long, but still has SOME life left. But soon, very very soon, it needs to face reality.

People seem to forget that NCSoft pulled out of the NA market as they said they could not compete, with their games. A wholly owned subsidiary is different than being pulled into the 'NCSoft fold'. People keep forgetting that A.Net has their own CEO, marketing, etc. If they didn't, then it would all be NCSoft's people but it is not.

It is not good but the game is 7 years old and they are still putting out updates to it. We shall shee how it goes.

It will probably take approximately 1 year to see if there are any substantial negative effects of this. The next 2 quarterly living story updates should be far enough in development that they would be unaffected in quality or release time even if the layoffs hit hard. It's update 4 or maybe update 3 where we will see Anet tested.

I say this in large part because we know that they have 3 living story teams working on episodes in tandem at all times.

Well, game has potential at begining, I remember spiting on Wow and my sub, ultimately selling my 1st Wow account, steping into GW2, preordered game 1st minute of sale... Getting ultimately dissapointed after few months/year, returning to Wow, never look back at fail game. It's great that they had support these years, even they didn't deserve. Too bad for good people in Anet and for fans of GW2.
