Also bear in mind controversy always encourages discussion. In a lot of ways I see Poorna does this he posts some very controversial stuff and people have strong feelings about them and it makes people discuss it. That is also a mark of a good article.
When you simply put out an article that is well written but not really contentious you're not going to get a lot of responses.
Also @Slapshot1188 I don't disagree about what you're saying I am just a tad more understanding and I worry I truly do that this site might just shut down and that too before I make legendary (a real tragedy) no seriously it would break my heart to see that.
Causing discussion is not the mark of good writing. This articles and others like this. make me feel like I have chucked away my precious time. This makes me think twice about reading more of his opinion pieces. Make a statement backing it up with facts is all I ask.

I agree that the subscriptions are a major value add, but Microsoft's is also platform agnostic, as has been brought up earlier.
Meaning, the purchase of an Xbox is dependent on one:
* Preferring games from Microsoft's smaller exclusive lineup or simply not caring.
* Being able to afford a console but not a PC to play the game pass games on.
* Preferring some feature of the system sufficiently to purchase it as a luxury console for multi-platform games.
* Simple brand loyalty.
* As a media box with no regard to games.
All of this applied to the Xbox One as well, and we saw how that performed in comparative sales.
You are still missing the bigger overall strategy and the relevant information needed to. That is ok you will see the picture more clear in a year or so. Besides, the year is not over for announcements from MS on what the ecosystem is continuing to add. Many will be very surprised
I'm assuming you're talking about their announcement of being able to play your games even on tablets and phones just by having the subscription. Basically what should have stadia been.
There's a TON of value from their subscription, you'd be a fool to not notice it.
That is just one of the many things. There will be more that will have light shed on it within the year. There are some game announcements that still will surprise.
Argh a cliffhanger! A surprise! Tell me tell me tell me plz!

No the facts were stuff like they cant stop talking about specs, here is a picture of them speaking about specs. Facts that matter, show how speaking about spec has failed these consoles. Here is how they failed and why they failed. I like looking at specs. Its a big reason I buy products but I also look at how the OS is optimized with the hardwear. Give us facts about how Windows 10 is not optimized or how Sony PS has a better optimized OS and here is why it performs better. Thats backing things up with facts.

Didn't the fact that they couldn't show a game that showed off their spec mean they didn't have one.
The article was about how their showcase failed. While he does talk about PS 5 it isn't Shank's job to promote PS 5 although he does come off as a fan of the PS 5. Not to mention that that might not be a good optic.
For any writer of an article you have to try to look impartial and what you're asking is perhaps a follow up article.
I have three big problems with the Xbox conference
1)We saw no gameplay for any next gen games but Halo. I don't get how anyone can hate on games that we saw nothing of. Undead Labs was bought by Microsoft in 2018 and said that Microsoft didn't give them a lot of money to make 1 & 2. So they were not AAA games but State of Decay will be. So who knows what that game will look like. On twitter in the same breath they said the game just started active devolpment. Fable is rumored for 2023. Avowed late 2022 or 2023. Confirmed first and third person mode though. Which leads me to my next point...
2)Xbox isn't ready for a next gen console. If all these games they showed are years away. Then they should have waited. It's no wonder why Xbox series X won't have exclusives for the first 2 years because we aren't seeing a series X game till then.
3) The eco-system. At first I was ok with it but if they are pushing PC, phones, and tablets just as hard as the Series X then why should I buy one. Granted I don't have good internet and I prefer consoles. So I will but most people on here will have no reason to pick up a Series X. Most games will run better on PC if not all of them.
I will be getting a PS5 at launch. I will get a Xbox Series X in 2022 when games start coming out and we see more.
Wait. Is a third person optional mode confirmed for Avowed? I would genuinely buy the system or at least the game just for that. I shit you not.
My dad still replays Skyrim and it would make a great gift. But neither of us have any interest in a first person RPG.
@Aeander all but confirmed. Someone dredged up old hiring documents and the like and they were asking for people with knowledge of First person and Third Person for a AAA open world RPG. A few very realible Xbox leakers then dumped a lot of information about Avowed and claimed that there will be a third person mode though the game is being built for first like Skyrim
That is fantastic news. I am so pleased as I cannot play first person games without feeling ill.

I just don't like the perspective. I think it kills situational awareness and dumbs down the combat for the sake of "immersion." First person RPGs all look and feel "cheap" to me (to use Wizardry's favorite word), and the Outer Worlds was no exception.
So the console hype machine is still using the fiction that game "X" requires the awesome technical prowess that only their machine possesses while anyone who knows about the guts of the consoles and how they compare to current gen PCs laughs at the message designed to seduce the rubes?
You buy consoles because they're cheap and maybe because your chosen one has that killer game exclusive that you just have to play.
The "only on ________ (insert console brand here)" only means "my HW is better than yours" to the most ignorant consumers. It's a tired old marketing message that has been used for several console generation launches.
What "only on my console" means is that they coughed up enough money to that studio to make it exclusive. Hasn't anyone been watching the Epic game store stories to know how that works by now?

Frankly, I don't care.
Most of my favorite games are first or second party console exclusives.
Most of them only exist or are as good as they are because of exclusivity.
In exchange for said exclusivity, these games are robust, high quality titles with no lootboxes or bullshit.
It's not Nintendo or Sony's fault that Epic's approach to exclusivity has been dreadful, and that Epic's platform is naff.

The point is that it has zero to do with Xbox or PS HW being better than the competitor and everything to do with them getting you into their ecosystem. Which is exactly why Epic also chose to go that route in an environment (PC) where the HW considerations are not relevant.

Yes, but because these games are intended to get you into their ecosystem, these games have all of the resources possible dumped into them to showcase said hardware as much as possible.
And I'm sorry, but if Halo Infinite and its laughable character models is the best showcase of the Series X we have so far... someone fucked up, yo. If I were Microsoft, heads would roll at 343.

From what I read, most of what we have seen so far has all been played on a PC. Im not sure if the Xbox X Series is in production yet. I dont take note of anything till I see or know what they showcase is played on the real deal. I am guessing closer to Christmas we will get to see what the new Xbox can do.
I think microsoft has just found itself in a bit of a weird position, unsure which segment to target and therefore losing itself by trying to appeal to all segments.
When MS entered the console market, the console market was ALL ABOUT GAMES AIMED AT GAMERS. There was a clear target market and a clear purpose behind what they were doing. I feel like microsoft did a great job, the original xbox had some great games and MS established themselves with the superior controller. Xbox 360 was a reasonable followup console, still focused on gamers and games.
The Wii changed the market.
Now games weren't just for gamers, but for everyone. MS wanted a piece of that market. Thats why we started seeing the Kinect device, and the Xbox One launch reveal had almost nothing about games and everything about how great it was in a family setting.
the problem is, the games market is still, by and large, for gamers. Sony seems to understand this, which is why all their PR is still focused on games. Its been a winning strategy for the last few generations, but im not convinced that it is a lasting strategy.
MS's longer term strat - focusing on the whole ecosystem and a wider market, not just gamers - seems to have much more potential if they can pull it off. If game streaming ever manages to work, MS's strategy makes them much better prepared than Sony. If we ever get truely platform agnostic, again, MS's strategy is better.
Still, with all that said, I am myself a "core gamer", and so even if I can see the point in microsofts strategy, as a gamer it is still disappointing. I don't really care about graphics (unlike Shank, clearly) but about gameplay, and neither Sony nor MS have been making any improvements in that area. They aren't serving people like me.
In addition, neither Sony or MS are pushing split screen games any more. being able to sit on the couch with a mate and play games used to be one of the only benefits of getting a console over a PC. Only Nintendo seems to remember this fact, which is why I was still happy to buy a Wii U - they still have loads of splitscreen games.

Our work will clearly show what the hardware can do thank you very much. All this is much ado about nothing. The sky is not falling.
I'm assuming you're referring to something unannounced and not Halo Infinite.
Yeah i got lost there a bit on translation of what was actually being said lol.
I have watched both presentations, seen the games and imo BOTH are over rated and the games are similarly over rated.
One argument i heard in there almost made me laugh, yes i agree the Microsoft presentation was a bit more misleading but Sony didn't sell me anything either. The mention of Tsushima and TLOU2 was what made me laugh.Tlou2 did not receive praise from the media ,i had no issues with the game but the vast majority apparently did but i already said my piece on that.Tsushima is to me lol big time over marketed, you couldn't pay me to play that pile of nothingness.
I could sum this up easily before i saw anything, both are a nice gimmick to kickstart new sales. The games would be RUSHED as you can see most are not even ready but will be rushed to get there for the early mad rush on new sales.
I said this way back during the PS2>PS3 days, most of the games can run on PS2's and to this day it is still true even with PS4 games. If all we are doing is trying to push yet ANOTHER market which is the whole 4k ordeal and a tiny bit better visuals then we have FAILED the games, you know the thing that really matters?
Like seriously wtf do i care about TECHNICAL standards,IDC about Intel or AMD or PS5 PS9 or Xbox 999 ,all i care about is seeing better games and i have not seen that since the early 2000's.Sure eventually games become dated looking but i still wouldn't trade a dated looking game for example to play some crap like BDO.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

So you don't worry about the fact that Microsoft is providing very little in terms of incentives to buy the next gen console when it releases? That seems like a massive mistake and possibly an acceptance that they won't compete with the PS5.
Now if I had my choice, it would be for MS to win the console war since they allow their games to go to PC. But I just don't see a solid strategy by MS here. If their sales end up being underwhelming, how many developers will start moving away from them?
"And that’s just it – we want to see gameplay. For all my criticisms of Halo Infinite’s visuals, I at least fundamentally understand now what the gameplay will entail. This is a good thing. But I have zero idea what Fable will play like, nor do I understand what Forza, or Avowed, or virtually every other game will feel like to play. I have no idea what to expect from them."
This paragraph at the end of the article cracked me up. You have zero idea what it will feel like to play Forza? Come on, we've been playing games for decades and the primary input method isn't changing. It's not like we're suddenly playing on the holodeck of the Enterprise. Forza will play like the last Forza played, and Horizon: Forbidden West will play like Horizon: Zero Dawn played, Spider-Man Miles Morales will play like Spider-Man PS4 played, and Ratchet & Clank will play like the last Ratchet & Clank played.
I can't for the life of me understand how so many grown adults have convinced themselves that Microsoft's 60 minutes of trailers and curated alpha demos was somehow vastly inferior to Sony's 60 minutes of trailers and curated alpha demos. With Sony releasing their games on PC and Microsoft leading the charge on Cross-Platform and Play Anywhere, exclusives will hopefully be a thing of the past by 2030. And good riddance...the fewer plastic boxes I need to buy to play the games I want, the lower my electric bill will be.
