Sony's Compensation Details - Is it enough?

StowawayStowaway Member Posts: 165

"As a goodwill gesture, Sony says it wil offer all customers a selection of downloadable content and 30 free days of its premium PlayStation Plus service." (I believe this is for PSN users)

"As compensation for the Sony Online Entertainment leak, Sony said that it will give all of its customers 30 days of additional subscription time, plus an extra day for each day the servers remain down". (For the PC players etc)

Source: Wired magazine.

Is it enough?

PSN has been down for 13 days? Who knows how long SOE will be down.....

As a DCU player which is a grind for marks to get gear game, shouldn't they consider giving some amount of marks for the time you've lost out? Free time doesnt make up for no marks in that time period.

I didn't expect any marks because I know what SOE are like. but something a little more creative than "have some free time" would have been appreciated to calm the fact this thing is down and they don't know when it will go back up.

I don't understand how people can even think about playing again? when their whole identity has been stolen and out in the open!

The last thing I am thinking about right now is touching any SOE game... at all. All I am thinking about how severe the breach has been and how much of my personal, account and financial information has been stolen and is now out in the open for grabs!

    Obviously is not enough.

Thay have compromised the bank details of +72.000.000 users worldwide and all they give is 30day free????

C´mon even Rift gave 30days free for some just having delays on costummer service questions...

Im not a PS player myself...but i would be really pissed of if that happened to me.

And what about those players that already have subscription to PS plus?? they get nothing?

Bad move Sony....Irresponsable & greedy as hell. ¬¬

That will work for me, been using game cards for years, maybe now people will understand that this sort of thing will happen again and take more precautions in the future.    Personal info?  all that stuffs been sold already by data miners.    Thiers a reason why most IT professionals dont leave data trails, you ever meet a IT pro with a Facebook account?

That's how I've been feeling since the 15th November 2005.

It was just a question of time, to see the manifestation of their incompetence, cost-cutting and general lack of giving a s**t about their cash-cow customer base. Just surprised to see they lasted this long without being exposed for what they are.

It's enough for me. If my details do get seriously abused as a result of this then I can always pursue further compensation. But it is always a risk no matter who you leave your details with, they are not guarunteed to be 100% secure.

It's like this some people know how to forgve and accept a good gesture for what it is meant.  It isn't the gift that counts it is the thought and at this point it is pretty obvious that who needs to be persecuted here is whoever did this not Sony.  Whoever weakened the system int e first place...   Whoever it was that actually did the hacking that got the information after the system was weakened and if their was espionage then someone is going to go down for this the hard way.  This is the unacceptable part is that this atrocity happened or was even thought of in the first place.

Why is everyone blaming Sony when they are not the ones who broke the law?????  Wow I did not realize just how uncaring and disrespectful this nation has gotten for everyone to sit and throw stones at the person who is not at fault and saying they are guilty until proven innocent instead of the right way around.  How shameful.  I guess no one has any morals or values anaymore to see the person who is actually at fault instead of the person who got attacked and is going to be the one that takes the loss in the end to everyone concerned......

I just can't wrap my head around all this hate and to me overreaction. Its more than enough for me, if I got 30days free for everytime this happened I would almost says I wish this happened on a regular basis. Obviously not but I have yet to see a good reason for this - I won't ever ever touch a sony game again.

Im wondering what they're going to do (if anything) for EQ2X customers that use the cash shop on a regualr basis.

The hackers broke the law yes!  But so did Sony / SOE for handling sensitive and personal information of millions of people so carelessly!

You have no idea what the concequences are going to be with this amount of personal data being stolen!  Hence, why in the US alone both NSA and FBI are involved in the investigation.

Sony PSN and SOE combined personal and financial information of over 100 million people have been stolen!! That is since the latest update! And they are still not done with the investigation and who knows what more is going to surface?!

The 30+ days of free time is all your going to get at this time. You have lost the ability to play for a period of time, they are replacing that time, that is it.

However, if you have had your identity stolen and you can deminstrate a crime then find someone to sue.

May I suggest that people with concerns about the thieft of creditcard numbers really should look into iether using game cards or something similar. Personally I like gift cards, i.e. goto Wal-Mart and get a gift card in the amount of whatever you need $14.95 or whatever) and use it to pay for the game you play.

The problem is that people outside US have no option to use Gametime cards, as SOE only sells them in the US.

Handling it carelessly? How can you say that? Do you honestly think that a corporation like Sony doesn't have some of the most expensive security and specialists that can be bought/found? Dude.. c'mon.. I know it's popular to jump on the SOE hate wagon, and yes, this leak is absolutely huge, but let's not pretend they're just throwing your account information around like confetti at a wedding!

The company's future and profits are based on keeping your information secure. They didn't do it on purpose, they're not negligent. Well, as far as I know they aren't, but that's what investigations are for. But these hacking attacks are targetting lots of major companies right now. Look at all the other big boys that have suffered data theft in the last couple years. What kind of compensation did Apple offer?

Granted, this is a massive issue, but let's not throw around bullshit just because it's cool to hate SOE. At their offices I bet you'll find a bunch of people doing the best they can to earn a living, just like you and I. And I bet there's a lot of people right now, working at their offices, that are suffering sleepness nights as it is.

Well I wasn't going to say this but if you found out it had been Osama Bin Ladan or someone like him that did this you would not be attacking Sony nearly as bad would you?

True we all have concerns in this I myself have to go change my bank account and everything but this is a time for action not reaction.

I my eyes what happened here is no less thant he Twin Towers only no one died.  It just put millions of people at financial risk.  So it is no different in my eyes whoever it was that did this is the one who needs caught not to attack everyone concerned but to find out who did it and find them.

p.s. flying griffon should be in the compensation bundle as well.

How unbelievable it may sound to you. Yes they did!  They stored personal information UNENCRYPTED in their databases.

With the PSN network breach, there Sony even stored credit card information UNENCRYPTED in their databases!

They were using outdated vulnarible software on their systems, which also didn't get properly updated with the latest security updates.

This is the basis of the Class Action Lawsuit against Sony that's being prepared right now in the US. And you can count on it that the EU will take similar steps against Sony about this!

Being hacked and have data stolen by hackers is one thing! And it is a criminal act by these hackers!

But in this case, Sony and SOE basically handed all our personal information (and financial information) to them on a silver plate!!

In case of SOE, they were also careless by issuing a statement over a week ago saying that no data had been stolen and now a week later (more than 2 weeks after the hacking) they suddenly take everything down and issue a press release that data of all their customers has indeed been stolen!   This is also highly unprofessional and totally careless on their behalf as well!

LOL, more like did you ever meet an IT pro with friends.

I kid, I kid, I'm an IT pro myself, and no I don't use facebook but not because I'm scared of identity theft.  I just find it annoying actually but my wife loves it.

Note that I plop my credit card down all the time, for instance my xbox live service, Amazon, some MMOs, Paypal, etc.  Luckily I don't have PSN service but unfortunately stuff happens.  Can't run around shopping only in big box stores because you are afraid of the big bad wolf.

Somebody steals your credit card info guess what?  Your credit card company figures it out within 20 minutes usually and locks it down, and then credits you the charges and sends you a new card.  It happened to me before and was no big deal.

I'd be more worried with putting your SSN out there even thoug that is easy to find if somebody is looking for it.  But credit cards are really safe for consumers, they really are.  Don't use debit cards though...

GW2 "built from the ground up with microtransactions in mind"
    1) Cash->Gems->Gold->Influence->WvWvWBoosts = PAY2WIN
    2) Mystic Chests = Crass in-game cash shop advertisements

Look if there was any wrong doing on Sony's part they will end up paying in the end but that is no reason to attack them in this manner.  Innocent until proven guilty.......  Do you have proof if you do then where is it????  You work there or something to know all of this???  When the lawmakers and judicials come down with a decision after proving the burden of proof then I will believe it until then well I will sit back and watch no accuse and not attack someone who so far in this looks like the victim not the outlaw.

Fair enough, if you're right. Not gonna call you a liar or anything. But yeh, it does seem highly unlikely that this would happen. Not to sound naive, either, but a company of that size leaving unencrypted financial/customer data open to attack just seems highly improbable.

So I'll wait for some proof on that one. Of course, if it turns out to be the case, then they will earn everything they get..

Only the creditcard table on the PSN network was encrypted (so they said and make us believe, as credit companies are blocking credit cards nonetheless everywhere at the moment).

The tables with all your personal information was stored in Plain Text !

According to sources (which is going to be used in the Class Action Lawsuit) they were using outdated vulnarible versions of Appache and were slacking with updating their systems with latests (security) updates as well.

Now with SOE, why the hell did they keep and old (unencrypted) database running on the live network with people's personal information, credit/debit information and account information?? Outdated or not! That is only the credit/debit card part! People's personal information and account information remains the same and is not!

That part alone, next to personal information being stored in Plain Text, is sertainly going to raise some red flags and serious questions towards Sony and SOE in how they are running their IT department!

You don't know that for a fact.  Negligence is not a matter of intent, it's a matter of competence.  You're presuming that they're security measures were adequate, but you don't know they were.  Given the scope of the breach, I'm inclined to think that they had some pretty substantial holes.  But until there's an actual investigation by an outside agency, no one will really know but Sony.

If people start seeing their identities being hijacked though, expect a sizable class action suit accompanied by a thorough investigation.  Then we'll know what actually happened.

I don't even really believe them and their promises anymore. The amount of times they've treated their players with absolute disrespect is outrageous. I'm sure that when PSN and SOE come back up they'll have some kind of trick up their sleeve which basically screws everyone affected by this fiasco.

When they took the pc games down yesterday I called my bank and blocked my visa as well as had new ones ordered. In the two countries I have visa cards in. Both banks knew about the issue and checked my account for anything out of the ordinary. I was in the clear, but better to be safe than sorry. I didnt wait untill the press release today because, well it seemed pretty obvious to me what was comming.

I dont like that my email and password/login and credit card details were stolen, however the latter is easy to fix by ordering new cards and blocking the old details. The first is a bit more dodgy. I have played mmo's since 1999 and tbh I wasnt as savy creating logins and passwords the first 5-6 years as I am now. I have to rack my brain to remember if my login and password might be the same as some other games I have played and would like to keep my accounts clean on. I dont think I did but Im not 100% sure.

The annoying part is, I havent played a SoE game since 2007, and then in the little addendum on the cnn news feed, they tell me that 12000 accounts retired in 2007 from certain countries had cc information still stored and stolen as well. Its like an std that keeps on giving, having had an account with SoE that is. /lesigh

Since I dont have an active account with SoE I dont get 30 days of free anything.. well 30 days and some free of worrying about this I do get I guess. And tbh I dont know about this identity theft thing. They dont have my social security number, and they dont have cc details they can use since I blocked and changed the cards. So they have my email, and my adress. I dont really have a problem with that. Atleast I can't see it being a problem at this point. Changing an email, doesnt seem like a big issue to me /shrug.

So I guess I dont see this as a huge issue to myself. If people are informed and take action to not be hurt by this, all they miss is some play time untill everything is back up again. So instead of giving yourselves ulcers worrying look to worry about other things and take meassures to protect yourself from any abuse that could come from the information that was stolen. It seems to me the only thing SoE could have done better at this point would have been to send information directly to their customers emails, about how to sign up for their identity theft programme.

Vote with your feet and get an xbox360 if you really want to punish Sony.  To be honest if MSFT shut down their live service for that long I most certainly would kick them to the curb.  I don't think Sony is evil or anything, but voting with your consumer dollar is a really strong notion...
