I honestly think UO is underrated in polls like this only due to the fact that probably 60% have never been exposed to it. Me personally I have tried DAoC but found it very uninteresting in the lowbie lvl so didnt progress to far. That being said I dont know witch I would have liked better.
I can say that not one MMO out there has come withing eons of UO in comparison to pvp. Why is that you ask?
The world objectives.(6 spawn hunts=one mass hunt) all in felucia (pvp lands) each hunt was pretty easy to the "leet" gamer I've even run despise i thiink it was. (Rat Spawn) Solo on my necro/mage. (wither FTW lol). That aside these spawns made the pvp environment active IMO. and feel this is what is lacking in current MMO's
Massive FFA Battles. Anyone who has played in fel knows of Lord Oaks and understood it was the most difficult hunt to do. So when it was atempted you knew s**t was gonna hit the fan. I remember one occasion of more the 500people fighting over this spawn. (A guild i was in and allies vs a guild that paid to transfer all their toon to our server to take us out) Didnt happen lol!
Imagine fighting a duel for 30-40+ mins depending on how good "you" are as a gamer. I was in a duel that lasted for aproximatly 20 mins and to finish it off we both died. (yes both died in a duel) As i cast my last lightning bolt for the kill he hit me with a poison cleaver. ( we both ahhhh'ed at the same time. lol ( i had over 20 witnesses who saw this and could never find them to prove if you asked)
That IMO is what makes the pvp is not a storyline but world objectives that promote me wanting to participate in it.
And now that work is over im going home flame my typos all you want unless your an editor I could care less. And even if you are an editor I still could care less.

Could have included AO instead of CoX. I'd go with DAoC or LII for the outdoor PvP, where WoW isn't close, but I do like WoW's options of Battlegrounds and Arenas. Never played UO, but I think I'd have liked its PvP back in the early days.
Agreed AO's PVP is er or was (?) 50 times what COX pvp is..
I would have to say Planetside, AO, and WOW (pre Honor system) were the best pvp games I played.
If WOW had some decent RvR type conflict going on then it would win hands down.

Shadowbane had potential and still does, great ideas, failed execution - worth playing again now that its free but it still runs like shit and the company that runs the servers is shit.
None of them are true pvp games.... closest is planetside The only true pvp mmo game ive seen is 10six
Marl is correct 10-6 now www.projectvisitor.com was without a doubt the most insane and awsome pvp ever !
me and a few friends actually won the first event they ever had by beating the time to take a plot out we were the waverunners, if i remember correctly
Some lead and some follow I prefer to stand beside!
I only tinkered with DAOC a little bit since my first MMO was SWG back in 2003 (and tried many others thereafter), and I was pretty stuck on that. But from what I saw, DAOC easily had the best PvP. It's kinda evident too with how many people are looking forward to WAR.
No competition really. FFA, body loot, projectile spells (you can actually dodge spells and arrows...gasp!). Not to sound elitist, but it's almost humorous to see people vouching for these other games *cough* daoc *cough*. Besides UO, there really is no comparison. Anyone who has played all these pvp mmo's will tell you the same exact thing. Level based games just cant have good pvp. In AC, a skilled lvl 50 player can own a decent lvl 126+.
and OP, how can you not have AC DT listed?!?!!! Everyone in the mmo community knows Darktide is infamous for its FFA politics.
"In AC, a skilled lvl 50 player can own a decent lvl 126+."
Well, it used to be like that :P Theyve screwed it up so bad in the last few years. I spent so long in my 60's on darktide just because I COULD and i could survive PvP and actually kill people, I rarely hunted and when i did it ended up becoming a war for hunting grounds, My god the good ol days of Darktide, No game has compared to it yet. It was only until they put the Levers in (later taking them out to my understanding) that i got up into the 100's.
Strangely enough, the most fun I have had in pvp is in LOTRO. I have played pvp on WoW, GW and DAoC (though admitedly I can't remember much about DAoC since it was so long ago) but there is something about monsterplay in LOTRO which I like. I can't put my finger on it though... perhaps that it is a bit slower paced, so you have time to think about what you are doing.
There is another game I am enjoying pvping in at the moment, but I am not allowed to tell you about that because of my NDA...
Most fun ever in a video game: raid bosses in lineage 2
The absolute most awesome game i ever played, quit because i got frustrated with the long time to level, but in its highpoints such as open (non instanced) dungeons and Raid bosses and all or nothing PvP it has been the best mmo i havnt found a suitable replacement as yet. Lets see what AoC has to offer.
UO wins for me. People who voted for Planetside, that was mindless nothingness PVP. You didn't lose anything and had no real penalty. If you voted for WoW, you probably only played WoW, which is no big deal but old school UO was awesome... believe us
Ultima Online without a single doubt. Pre-T2A OSI was just perfect.
Ultima Online 98~04 Dark Age of Camelot 03~07 Final Fantasy XI 04~06 Guild Wars 05~08 World of Warcraft 04~05 Unsuccessful Tries: DFO/EQ2/DRaja/Rag/Req/RYL/9D/Cabal/KO/PSU/RF/GE/TO/TR/DDO/EVE/LoTRO/L2/RZ/SWG/VG
I have heard that UO and DAoC were two of the best but I personally prefer EVE. There are a lot of elements of EVE that support a nearly perfect PvP environment.
I can't believe some people voted for WoW!? lol oh well, prolly just lacking experience in MMOs. I voted UO. I've heard DAoC has great PvP, but I've never played so I would have to say UO. Of course UO today is nothing compared to old school UO PvP.
I actually voted for wow, i really enjoyed playing a twinked out warlock in the level 19 battlegrounds. As for a lack of Experience, I have been in MMORPG's since 1997. I remember the Pre Trammel days.
None of them are true pvp games.... closest is planetside
The only true pvp mmo game ive seen is 10six
You are ill informed then. No offense, but Shadowbane, while having a craptastic engine and lots and lots of bugs, is all about pvp. There's nothing to do BUT pvp really.
DAOC isn't all pvp, but RVR is pvp. There's no such thing as this game is real pvp and this one isn't. If you can kill other players its pvp.
Something like UO is pvp, not THE pvp though, its just FFA pvp. DAOC is not THE pvp, but realm vs. realm pvp. Eve is not only about pvp, but it has its pvp areas, and though I've never played it, I've heard a lot of people say good things about it.
Hell, even FPS's aren't REAL pvp, because they are pve games, where you can log onto pvp instances to kill other players. If you're playing the single player game they all start as though, its pve. If you look at it in that light...fps's are just pvp instances... like WoW.
Just thought I'd point that out.
Well glad ya pointed that out...cause that wasnt my point at all...
What i meant by "true pvp" is a game thats about pvp not a game with pvp. Planetside and 10six both have 0 mobs 0 quests your goal is to kill and survive.(they both do have levels but they do not effect damage or anything) All the other games have pve aspects you have to do in order to pvp.(eve might fit in also im not sure if you have to do pve or not)
I have played every game on that list and theres only one game that stands out pvp wise
Ultima Online. No contest. If you dont choose pre trammel UO then you obviously never played it. It was the most insane/tense/heart pumping pvp in any mmorpg. If you got caught unready for battle you could end up losing a whole days work. As a pk on great lakes, i saw many many battles and every single one was completely different and insanely interesting. UO was so interactive, you could fight house to house, guild to guild, murderer to newbie, anything was fair game. And best of all skill mattered. Theres no button smashing and theres no cooldowns. Its all about smart play and out thinking the opponent. You had to hotkey usually over 100 keys in order to be a viable pvper. If you hit the wrong button in a fight, you were dead.
Its so sad that people will never get to try this pvp unless they go on a crappy private shard.

1st one would be Asheron's Call
2nd id have to say Daoc
its hard to believe that people are voting for wow come on!!!!!

Easy UO far and away best PVP ever.
Lineage 2, but the best pvp isn't very often and I'd rather a more balanced PvP game where more classes can compete.
I only tinkered with DAOC a little bit since my first MMO was SWG back in 2003 (and tried many others thereafter), and I was pretty stuck on that. But from what I saw, DAOC easily had the best PvP. It's kinda evident too with how many people are looking forward to WAR.

Star Wars Galaxies till NGE, Then World of Warcraft. Waiting for WAR,Tabula Rasa, and Universe Online since WoW is a little generic.
