I have to comment on one thing before I give my opinion on the game as a whole (or what Ive seen of it so far):
Auto Follow makes pvp unskilled?
SERIOUSLY?
Auto-follow is an absolute MUST if you want an MMORPG designed around skill in combat. Without Auto-follow, the game simply degenerates into who can exploit latency issues the best and who can run around like a chicken with their head cut off to avoid getting hit. Are you 12? How can you think that would make for a good game-play experience?
This aint counterstrike, where you can circle-strafe and bunnyhop to victory.
Now I will point out this: most MMORPG combat systems are craptastic. They arent based on skill, but on level and gear and class. Most fights are decided before anything is even done. Warrior > Rogue > Wizard > Warrior or some such Rock/Paper/Scissor balance system. If you are a higher level by more than 3 levels? Odds are you are going to win. Got epic level gear and you pick a fight with a guy in blues? You win.
Skill has NOTHING to do with it. But to suggest, even for a second, that AUTO FOLLOW is what kills skill in a game?!?! You are a moron. A complete, total, and utter INCOMPETENT fool who has no idea how a game should be balanced or even played.
You say you play EvE? EvE has a decent combat system BECAUSE of the movement mechanics. One of those mechanics? KEEP AT RANGE and ORBIT X Yards. Thats Autofollow.
EvE suffers from many of the other flaws of standard MMORPG combat systems, but its still fun because of the depth of effective options one has in fitting.
Anyway, enough.
So far in OB, I havent really experienced any lag. Its been fun enough...not the OMG AWESOME AION!!!! but better than War, AoC, and all those other crappy games. Im waiting to judge pvp in this game until I actually participate in it. The PvE is much like WoW, which isnt a bad thing. Dying is much more...annoying so far than WoW was, but that isnt a bad thing either. The flight system is interesting but I havent played around too much with it yet. I am sad I cannot fly and engage pve opponents on the ground (it bugs the mob out as if you had run out of its range) but I can kinda understand how...unbalancing that would make it for ranged classes to be able to do.
So Im still in Wait and See mode for this.
OP, you are just a retard. Go play Counterstrike more.
These three things doth a wise man fear: A storm at sea, a moonless night, and the anger of a gentle man
Again, what do you mean we don't have pvp with risk? Did you even look at the Abyss ranking system and how it works? I mean sure in EVE you lose alot, but does that mean you are somehow better for a game's design? I mean if you made EVE then I don't mind saying you are better.
Eh, I think he's right, Aion pvp has zero risk when compared to EVE, and is ultimately a rather pointless zerg. EVE pvp affects everything from the solo player losing his hard-earned ship, to a corp losing control of a mining sector, which can then affect manufacturing, supply and demand, and a host of other things that have a ripple effect through the economy and therefore the entire game experience.
Aion has......a ranking system? Wow, risky.
Lol.
I understand people like Aion, that's ok, but don't pretend it has meaningful pvp with risk. It doesn't.
I can see how this feature is sort of a game killer. I have been following this game since the beginning and have really been looking forward to it. I don't know if this feature will keep me from playing it now but we'll see.
However, that's not my point for writing. I've seen way too many people call this a gear vs skill issue now and how it'll make it all about gear. Really? What game doesn't do that? The auto follow feature aside... every game in one way or another is gear based. Better gear better dps / mitigation = more of a chance to live through a fight. Sure in some a player with lower gear can win if they have a bit of skill but most of the time the better gear will win.
This game never claimed to be anything different, it just a nice new polished mmorpg.
Anyway you guys can go back you your quest to finding you "perfect" mmorpg whilst I play and enjoy Aion
Also to fully enjoy the game for what it is you need to get past level 25, but the problem is most mmorpg player judge a game from the first few minuets...that’s why the mmorpg industry is going to fail
You guys have been saying this game is the best game ever for a few months now. Im shocked that such a awesome game Isn't keeping you off the forums right now.
Anyway I'm not play my game right now im watching day two of the Eve Alliance tournament on CCPs youtube channel.
Good to see some pvp with risk aye? Oh that's right you don't have any of that lol.
Its an open beta, im waiting till the 20th to go all out....not point going full out now if everything is going to get wiped.
Same old stuff, no real depth of character or anything like that. Very WoW like but seem to pull it off worse with clumsier controls. Graphics are really nice. Good graphics. The one thing I could see being a major problem is the attacking "feature". On my warrior if you click attack it will autofollow/attack at the same time. How could this be good for PVP or inject any skill into it what so ever? Ugh. Does it feel like they've been in release for a whole year? No. Same old boring quests. Would I pay 50$ for release and a monthly when I can just stay subbed to another game? NO. NO WAY IN HELL. I mean good attempt, just...no. This style of play just turns into every other style of korean gameplay. 1. Have better gear and have spells queued up in the right order. Roast someone. Rinse and repeat. Just the fact that the game doesn't have a free movement system for pvp really douches it up. I dunno, I won't be wasting my money on this. You can call me a troll or whatever you'd like but I saw the PVP videos and everything...no. Some people will like it, probably the PVE gang.
You got all that from 5 minutes gameplay and a few PVP vids? Impressive.
WHY would you turn auto follow off? It's CLEARLY an advantage to have it in AION if you're melee. Look at the PVP tournament videos. ALL MELEE USES IT.
It's being called lineage 2 / wow mix.
I don't, I love the feature. it's great for my spiritmaster and cleric. Don't know why some people complaint about it. They are so stupid.
It's a lame mechanic, how is someone supposed to get away in world pvp?
You could just auto follow them, might as well put everyone in a flat box with everyone out in the open it totally takes away the ability to use terrain as an advantage in escape.
You must not be much of a pvper.
This made me laugh ....guess you never played DAOC. But being the PVPer you are you would have had to of right? or is all your PVP from WOW?

(DISCLAIMER - The use of the word YOU in the above post is not directed at any one person in particular, but towards those who fall into the category itself - there is no personal attack here, neither intentional nor implied.)
Not going melee but double clicking on a mob will invoke follow plus attack. In your defense, this is the same system Lineage 2 had in 2004. If it looks like a duck and quacks. It's probably a duck. All WoW comparisons aside, which imho there is no comparison between the two, Aion seems to follow convention with wings.
Personally, I'ld rather have convention with thought required than FOTM and victory handed out to the best geared like WoW has it. And your right, there is no comparison.
Oh and to whomever it was that stated you can tell if a system is good in the first 10 minutes..........all I can say is I hope your first boss is smarter and more patient than you are, otherwise your doomed.

Try to catch kiting people with autofollow before putting it down. To be a PvPer you seem to be a really terrible theorycrafter if you "guessed" autofollow has any impact on this game's pvp.

And the Bosses in Aion seem to be quite like the bosses in Lineage 2, which require a balanced group of dps, tank, and healer to overcome at appropriate levels. You could even draw a comparison here with wow, I am trying to avoid that comparison though.
As far as the ten minute mark goes, not my quote, if you have done enough research on a game, and if you have played enough games, then I agree with the above, you can spot most systems right away. I mean the tree is right there in front of you to examine whether or not you make a specific level, Aion is not hiding your progression.
As to whether Aion has done something other than character creation customization to separate itself from Lineage 2 remains to be seen, yet everything I have seen thus far begs the outcome of being a Lineage 3. Being an old player of L2, I can say I am smart enough to know what to call to take on a boss in this sort of game. As you said, it is convention..
Played (more than a month): SWG, Second Life, Tabula Rasa, Lineage 2, Everquest 2, EvE, MxO, Ryzom.
Everybody is bitching about how auto-follow is gamebreaking and makes the PvP terrible, but I have some ideas as to why people think that.
1.) In World of Warcraft, you can jump around, run circles around people to avoid being hit. They call that skill, but in truth, if you just stood there and attacked the way you normally would, but without the dancing, you'd get destroyed because you, in fact, have no skill and rely on line of sight to do everything for you.
Auto-Follow(not to be mistaken with auto-own) means that you would have to do the unthinkable........be good! *gasps*
2.)Auto-Follow being called a game breaker is absurd. Apparently the people complaining about the auto-follow they experienced, or the auto-follow they've watched on youtube, completely ignores roots, stuns, and snares that will be in the game. If there isn't then they wouldn't make a PvP based game in the first place. How else would the caster stay alive against say a rogue if not for Fear, Sleep, ect.,. Saying auto-follow is gamebreaking because it forces you to be good at your class is like saying rogues are terrible when attacking from behind.
"Oh lords no Warriors in World of Warcraft are overpowered because charge allows me to "auto-follow" at blinding speeds to my target."
or
"Oh lawrds rogues shadowstep in WoW is absurd because they don't need to waste time holding the W key to get to me, NERF!"
or for those of you whom baught your accounts and only character is a death knight...
"Oh my lord no! I think death knights are bullshit because they can death grip me and close the gap between himself and I, someone must be blammed for this injustice!"
3.) For people complaining mainly about how "all the best warrior pvpers in aion use it!" go cry me a river, build me a bridge, and get over it. His job is to close the distance between him and his target by any means nessisary, and it is YOUR job, to make sure he doesn't get to you. If you play the game long enough and you don't know how to kite somebody that is "auto-following" you, then you probably should uninstall because useless filth like you is what ruined WoW.
Even your wow ideas are WAY off from the truth and what was said.
IF you have an auto follow it STRICTLY CREATES the rock vs. paper vs. scissors atmosphere. SERIOUSLY. It creates the standing still vs. standing still, which requires NO SKILL because at that point it's GEAR AND CODE DEPENDENT. It REMOVES THE PLAYER FROM THE EQUATION. The more you remove the player the worse a game becomes on gear and code.
Dude, not even fucking CLOSE. Even your wow ideas are WAY off from the truth and what was said. IF you have an auto follow it STRICTLY CREATES the rock vs. paper vs. scissors atmosphere. SERIOUSLY. You have no clue, seriously.
During a chase, you could either follow footsteps or take shortcuts/try to figure out oponents next steps.
Who is going to be more efficient? A guy who, at the same speedrate, follows the footsteps of his enemy? or a guy who guesses where his enemy is going to move to, taking shortcuts to that zone?
Your experience in pvp seems quite limited if you can't see how autofollow is not something skilled players will use.
I'll even refer to my guild's Aion video, Im Flv, in the intro of my character, do you think that I could have managed to do the ice chain if I was autofollowing?
Oh I'm sorry, watching the korean pvp tournaments and their autofollowing might have just convinced me that especially in 1v1 autofollow happens ALL MATCH.
Anyway, anyone who likes AION enjoy. Nothing wrong with liking it.

HAHAHAHA, oh yeah your going to piss off some of them RAWK hardcore PVPers of WoW there. Your absolutely right of course, but your still going to piss them all off. Two Thumbs Up!

It happening doesn't make it any more effective. Again, refer to the video I posted to see how not autofollowing, taking shortcuts instead helped me in that situation.

Well said man! Well said!
I played WoW for years!
I played EVE Online for years!
WoW has no skill. It's all about gear gear gear! Whoever has the best gear wins! PERIOD!
Before TBC came out, there was at least some skill involved as hardly anyone had PVP gear nor that much peeps ran around in Full Epixx. So the BG's and World PVP was still somewhat fun.
But since TBC, the introduction of Arena's and all the PVP Epixx gear available now. It completely destroyed PVP in WoW.
So please.... spare me the sentiments of WoW being a skilled PVP game. LMAO!
And that EVE player making such a fuzz about Auto Follow being completely gamebreaking?????
Excuse me?? You don't even deserve to have an EVE avatar!! Have you even played EVE Online at all??
EVE Online has all the Auto Follow and Auto distance features you can get!!!! So please! You really FAIL at trolling!
If this is post number 105 then AION is the best game ever.

I don't understand what the big deal about auto follow is? I played in CB and learned to adapt around it and not to use it as in just use your attack key then go up to the mob or player. You learn how to deal with the auto follow quick when rolling a scout as you need to stealth to get behind mobs.
Judging the overall game based on the beginning areas isn't giving it a fair chance as the starting zones are basically just mindless quest / kill / collect turn ins like every other MMO games at least until you get to some of the open grouping areas / abyss also you haven't even had a chance to pick your true class..
If this is post number 105 then AION is the best game ever.
Well I guess that settles it.

Comments
For the simple fact that Aion is slighly better than almost every other MMO out there in every way. That to me... makes it great. Nuff said.

I don't see why auto-follow is such a big issue. Turn it off if you hate it, turn it on if you like it.
The game gave you a choice, now go away.
Don't want it on but are worried about other people's advantage? How about polish player skill to make up for it, or learn how to use it?
I mean if the option you prefer have the advantage, I am sure you wouldn't complain saying that the people who auto-follow is at a disadvantage.
Complaining when the game already gave you an option is the most ludicrous thing I have ever heard.

Yet another moron that thinks the first 10 levels are the entire game.
(The PvPvE aspect in the game 20+ is quite good actually)
Move along everyone, nothing to see here.
I'm sorry to tell you this but a player can figure out if a combat system is shit within the first 10 minutes of playing.
Going melee makes my character auto follow? jesus dude most people blasted WAR for having auto facing.
Not going melee but double clicking on a mob will invoke follow plus attack.

Tried: WoW, Shadowbane, Anarchy Online, Everquest, WWII Online, Planetside
Beta: Lotro, Tabula Rasa, WAR.
Dude, not even fucking CLOSE.
Even your wow ideas are WAY off from the truth and what was said.
IF you have an auto follow it STRICTLY CREATES the rock vs. paper vs. scissors atmosphere. SERIOUSLY. It creates the standing still vs. standing still, which requires NO SKILL because at that point it's GEAR AND CODE DEPENDENT. It REMOVES THE PLAYER FROM THE EQUATION. The more you remove the player the worse a game becomes on gear and code.
I dont know what you people smoke.
I'll even refer to my guild's Aion video, Im Flv, in the intro of my character, do you think that I could have managed to do the ice chain if I was autofollowing?
www.youtube.com/watch

Cheers

Well I guess that settles it.
