I hate that it's not an open world...I was expecting an Elder Scrolls or Two Worlds style open world to explore...shit...at least a Fable 2 sized world....but no...i got this linear garbage...
Guess whos fault that is? ding ding ding thats rights yours.
People who expect things to be what they want are fail, it is what it is and you could have easily found that out beforehand, thank god its not an open worlkd game, as they usually lack a lot of substance, and while there supposed to be "open" theres really no point in exploring, unless you like coming across the same cave 500 times.
Apparently stating the truth in my sig is "trolling" Sig typo fixed thanks to an observant stragen001.
The worse thing about the cutscenes, even beyond the inane dialogue and ultimately pointless choices, is how they reposition your party in a little circle after it is done. And where did all those people come from? We just came from that hallway not 5 seconds ago. Give orders to your team mates? Sure, then they always find a reason to interrupt their spell casting and reposition themselves. "No, I don't want you to stop casting so you can run back to the group and get stunned by one of the six shattering shots that are coming this way."

I've got a friend who played Fallout 3 and "finished" the game in about 3 weeks. Not too long ago we were talking about how it could've been better and he tells me that they should've raise the level cap to at least 50 and how much better the game would've been with all of those perks.
This thread made me laugh pretty hard at the overall ignorance some people have when it comes to RPGs.
I bought Dragon Age with very little knowledge of what to expect with the overall game play, and just for fun I decided to splurge on the Collectors Edition. I can honestly say I would have been very upset with myself had I not bought the CE because this has ranked as one of my favourite games of all time now.
At first, the cut scenes were a bit overwhelming, but they put together a great story. After all, is not story telling a large part of what an RPG is?
I was a little disappointed in that you use a map for travel instead of running across the world as you do in a game like Oblivion, but after thinking it over and how many times I had to return to places, I'm very thankful that they didn't go that route. All the time you sit watching cut scenes would be nothing compared to the amount of time spent running back and forth from city to city. All in all, Oblivion had a very small world map compared to what DAO would have had to have.
I'm now on my second run through of the game and making different decisions, and while they may not change much with the main quest, there are many other things changing throughout the game which make it feel like a completely new experience.
Ultima Online Mystic of The Fallen Lords (Pacific 98-01) Mystic of Catskills (03 - 08)
That is probably the most intelligent thing I've read on this site in a long time, Children should stick with hello kiddie online and maybe when they learn to read they can learn to play games where is all about the storytelling.
Dragon Age is not about roleplaying really. The game resembles tactical chaotic game with overlong fights interrupted by heavily scripted cutscenes with a choice to pick a dialogue line now and then. Heavy story-driven games are Planescape Torment, Vampire: Bloodlines, Fallout 1&2 (not F3for heaven's sake), Baldur's gate 1. These games that do not force you to go throught the same stupid combat-camera fiddle mechanics and then let you wait 5 minutes for cut scenes to finish.
These games are about the actual gameplay, puzzles, various choices to progress throught. They let you enjoy the story without the constant need to fight something on every step.
Relax, this isn't an MMO, there is no "need" to rush. Breath a little and enjoy the engrossing cutscenes and intricate dialog. Watch the cutscenes as a movie and play the game like an RTS. Each fight needs to be approached with strategy and finess, especially when on harder difficulties. I recommend turning the difficulty up, grabbing a beer, and enjoying the game, rather than nerd splooging over xp.
I agree here but nightmare is easy and im affraid most thought this game would be like oblivion but its a totally different rpg.

Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009..... In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.

Its amazing how many people dont get that most people, you know, want some story with tehre rpg, unlike a game like oblvion where the dialouge is cringe worthy.
DA>>>any other rpg released in years.
Its not the games fault you have the attention span of a nat and a 5 minute cutscene is somehow to long for it.

Dunno why bioware make games... they should go to hollywood, all their games are a bunch of bla bla bla... they sell well anyways, but bla bla bla anyways too.... i guess tons of people like bla bla bla... or those high sales and so on are pure stories...
I'm enjoying it with dalarian elf at least up to the end of the first big battle. Something about the starting area out in the woods with the scary cave got me. All the invisible walls are gay though. Why is it so hard to have natural borders like bodies of water and cliffs, etc? You feel too boxed in and it's not necessary even with the guided story. Also I can't seem to go back and do quests I've missed. They just dissapear from the journal. It gives you the impression they weren't important.
My main beef with the other big dev's like bioware / EA is that they can't seem to deliver the whole enchalada like Blizzard does. This game would be great with co-op at least. It has a party system, unlike Risen, which I was also dissapointed in it not having multiplay. Didn't microsoft's Dungeon Siege have coop like a decade ago? Why today can no one step up to the plate and give us a great RPG with all the cookies?--other than blizzard who takes 20 years doing it.
Oh and you can thank me for not starting a new thread...
This game is very boring!! Damn the cut scenes are just crazy annoying. Damn and we cant even skip them. The game is just too damn slow. Tired of having to keep saving, just so I dont have to go through and repeat scenes if ya get killed.
Its just not your cup of tea hehe.
You prolly like Oblivion/ Devinity2 /Risen then?
If so yes DAO is totally different game no exploring small maps limited freedom lord of rings rip off and more about cutscenes then actual play, better leave it alone then:P

It was gaspowersgames and was 2002 plus its was not same as risen or oblivon you look from above to map.
But it had perfect multiplayer yes dungeon siege was great game ive enjoyed that alot at same time that year i enjoyed another game even more one of my favorites Morrowind Elder scrolls 3.

My point is why now doesn't anyone take up the challenge? Everyone and their mother wants co-op or other network play in rpg's. You saying they had a bigger budget than devs today?
Press the ESC key to skip all cutscenes. Escape key! damn lol. Is this your first game? And if you don't like party members why did you buy an RPG game? That's like someone who hates chocolate just grabbing any old candy bar in the store. Almost half of the RPGs have party members!
And you're tired of having to keep saving?! Um don't play video games? rofl. Most games require you to save... *cough* God of War 3?
You obviously don't like games with a strong storyline, fleshed out characters, deep backstory. You like free-roam open world like Oblivion. Although a lot of people hated Oblivion because the story was weak. But the rest of your reasons for not liking Dragon age are pure bs. Anyone who has played more than 2 RPGs knows about escape button, party members, and saving a game.
I guess this guy would come here crying if he ever played FFX. I remember starting the game, waiting for a hour till I started moving. Some peoples enjoy rpg more for the story than the gameplay (I'm one of them). Especially when the player can change the story like in bioware's games. I really don't know if Mass Effect 2 would be so awesome without those cutscenes and decisions you made.
Why is it that everything is black and white around here? There is more than deep RPGs and action RPGs. Every game is different. I agree with the OP on DA. I like deep RPGs like the next person, but after the origin story, DA is just an endless mass of overly long dialogues where your choices don't really change anything, then who you may get to sleep with (oooo, get a real gf/bf). The combat is ridiculous. It is not tactical at all when 20 guys rush your 4 and no matter what you try to set up is demolished by 10 people surrounding your character, while bowmen fire right through their own men to hit you. And it still has one of my faves. People leave items laying around in chests so anyone can take them, and don't even try to stop you when you do it right in their own homes. This was supposed to be some amazing new RPG experience and all it is is an interactive movie with some cheesy MMO type quests and obnoxious combats thrown in.
I agree.
Dam iam so pissed about DA and Demon Soul.
This is what people of this generation are calling Top Console Single player RPG?
Dam cant believe it. I am so pissed, I dont even want to play Call of Duty anymore, or better yet, any PS3 game anymore.
Kind of off topic, kinda not, but I'm wondering how someone who loves rpg's ends up with a PS3?

I know where you going with that and you can stop right there.
I started playing RPGs on the SNES with Final Fantasy II. (aka Final Fantasy IV)
Some of my favorite RPGs are Console RPGs (most made by Squaresoft)
So don't you even suggest there are no good console rpgs, cause that would be foolish.
I'm a RPG lover and have a PS3 and a 360... and?
Anyway why someone dreged up a thread from Janurany is beyond me.
Actually. thats not where I was going. ASSume much? I love consoles. and I love console RPGs. In fact, I tend to buy the console that has the most and best RPGs. That is one of the reasons I don't own a PS3 and also the motivation behind my question

Countless films, games and books have done the same thing. QQ. The twist with dragon age is the ability to decide what is going to happen next. Example, In DA:O you go to a dalish camp for their aid against the darkspawn threat, instead, I sided with the werewolves and lead a charge against the dalish, slaughtering every last one. Awakening really mixes things up, up to you to try, but I'm sure you'll find a comparison. Love your signature though, how often do you look at it?

Really there haven't been many RPG put on the PS3 yet.
FFXIII was good but lacking. I really enjoyed Valkyria Chronicles, which was part aiming like a FPS, married with a turn base RPG.
I plan on picking up Resonance of Fate cause it look pretty good.
I got the PS3 1st for Killzone 2 but I also knew FFXIII was coming as well as Kingdom Hearts 3.

I do agree the cutscenes are a bit much at times even for a bioware game.
But overall I very much enjoyed DA:O. I knew what to expect before i bought it. I knew it wasnt an Elder Scrolls type game.
IMO people need to read up on and research the games before they spend money. It will probably save you time, money and disappointment.
