Took me 1 night of patchning to get all the patches and had no issues log-in the game.
However the massive lag and a bug with missing skill books were really frustrating.
I solved the skill book issue downloading a fix from the officialf orums and then I did have some fun experimenting with armour crafting. However the lag was still there.
+2 for innovative style of gameplay. Not TRUELY innovative because of previous already done styles by UO and other games but either those games are ancient, comparatively to the average lifespan of MMOs, or they are actually dead. And nobody else had dared to try it again. The first person view combat is unique for MMOs though.
+1 for the world. The world is beautifully done. But who would have knew? Its the Unreal Engine, we know what its capable of.
+1 for AI. While it is mildly buggy at times, it is interesting to see *wildlife* actually run away or attack depending on it's behavior. Nothing like darting weasels and pigs while razorbacks will stand and fight ya to the death.
+1 for skill based. While I am still fond of class based games, skill based just allows for more diversity. But when you add a point limit, then you truely find people can actually "develop" their own classes based on the allotted points for skills. Never liked the EvE system of skill points as older players become truely masters of EVERYTHING instead of masters of their given skill set they choose.
+1 for lore. This might seem like a given as most MMOs as they can come up with unique story, but I seem to gravitate to the idea behind Mortal Online much easier than others. Maybe that is because I have been around sense the forums has opened.
+1 for character creation. Another *almost* given for most MMOs. Some are far less that others which I will not give points to those games but this one has the elements for sliders and choices (love the lineage system).
+1 for crafting system. Provides a multitude of weapons, armor, tools, ect to be built. But it is remain to be seen how many viable options are actually left out of the what...2 million combinations?
+1 for player crafted cities. What else needs to be said?
-2 for moving foward much too fast. I am sorry, there is probably nothing you can do about it but this is going to hurt your player base and potential player base so bad that it might not make it by the end of the year. If you can, please give yourself another 3 or 6 months. If you can not, then hopefully the current players looking the other way will look back later in the year. EDIT: Decided to roll incompleteness into this subject as they both generally are the same effect coming from the same cause.
-1 for animations. The animations, while not overall bad, specific areas like movement and camera play for mining needs to be reworked. Sure, the camera tilt is nice after the first couple of hits, afterwards you start to notice the jerky start/begin motion. Almost like a robot instead of a living being. I believe they are a bit below the standard you see in most MMOs today.
+0 for UI. The UI is simplistic, which I like, but is also seemly missing something. Some of the functionally of the UI is missing at the moment also.
Overall, I think Mortal Online is every bit deserving of a 6, maybe even a 7 but currently, I think a 6 will do them justice. My major beefs are listed in the negatives. They are just pushing the game out too fast (who isnt anymore but not this fast), odd animations for certain actions, and incomplete core gameplay areas. But I am optimistic they can pull out if they can just survive to continue production on the game.
MMOs Played: I can no longer list them all in the 500 character limit.
Just want to weigh in again. Some of you guys are saying a 6 or 7 based on "potential" I want to know what your experience is so far in the beta (whats actually in the game right now) not what you hope will be in the game in the future.
Please vote on the open beta experience, not what you hope will be in MO in the future.
Originally posted by parrotpholk But would potential not count for their OB so far. I mean if thats what they are getting from it is a potential peek into the future would that not be valid? From a realistic point of view I cant see anyone rating the OB itself more than a 5 but I am a glass half empty type also.
Potential in this sense is what the game will be in the future after release. Some of these people are giving it a 7/10 based on what they hope will be in the game, not what they have actually tested. I want a realistic view of what they think, not what they hope will be implemented later.
Common! They havent even been able to come up with working patcher/updater for all those years, do you seriously think they can make good game?
They did not write their own patcher, a community member made it for them in his spare time. Not sure why Starvault was unable to make a universal patcher that works with all systems with no bugs (like normal MMOs)
I voted 3. It is plain horrible, compared to other games betas, even to other indie companies betas. I honestly dont give a crap about how much fans will defend it with it's only a beta.. Its long past that stage, it's open beta, and if you would look at other games, 99% of open betas are what people get at release. I fear to even login if MO will be like this at the release.
Bugged, raw, user unfriendly and plain boring. Yes, I said boring. So much for a "sandbox" when all you can do is grind the mats for crafting, tame, build a house or gank. That is not sandbox for me, to little options.
I personally think SV could have done several things different, but well.. Thats just a personal opinion. But when there is a resting skill, and you gotta read a book to learn to BREATH in water, you know it is bullshit. Common sense ftw..
They got quite high potential, but that potential currently goes down the drain. There is no PvE in the game, except for resource gathering (Even thou they promised some epic mobs), exploring is pointless and gives no rewards, they promised cartography, but its not in atm, and navigating is a pain in ass (No, not "hardcore", PAIN IN ASS).
If I would judge from how complete this game is, it would still be in alpha. Hell, even in other games alpha you could do more.. That, and I have SV ways of milking money, by allowing only preorders (With their overpriced product, I mean wtf, digital download for price of normal games collectors edition?) into beta.
I will personally give this game half a year before I even consider buying this .. game.
Btw, this topic got linked in MO forums, so I would expect a raid of fanbois incoming, defending their alpha and giving high ratings.
Doubtful. Most are somewhat grounded in reality. Just because we defend it or enjoy it does not mean we cannot see flaws. No one in their right mind can say the game is in good shape. If they launch in its current condition then me and many others will be on the titanic. However if they take what they learn from this open beta and apply it and make realistic promises and strides then it will be a great game for years to come. The next UO...no but MO yes.
Actually 19 people have voted for this open beta as an 8, 9 or 10 (so far). So if your 3rd sentence is true.. what does that say about the folks coming over here to vote like that?

I'm missing another option "can't rate because i couldn't get an impression of the game due to nonstop slideshow or crashing". Maybe there is in fact a beta behing all this trouble..if so, i wasn't able to get into it. Too bad, the genre needs new stuff...but MO will go nowhere.

for every fanboi they can gather there are 5 people with a bare minimum of standards and interest in honesty, thats why so far 60% people scored it 1-3.
anyway as parrot said people are rather grounded in reality. MO doesnt even have enough blind fanbois left to rig this poll.
I bet they have 10x more cancels daily than new preorders thanks to the beta

Not from what I have seen.. You cant even post constructive criticism without a topic being overrun from idiotic replies which also overrun the few well thought out replies.
MO fanboys are just as bad as the DF fanboys.. Both of which are in serious denial.
Well, you can just read their QQ about mmorpg.com in the thread. Says alot about community which start bashing the site only because the game is getting low ratings
When it comes to MMORPGs the last thing you want people to say about your game is that it has " potential ".. Thats pretty much the beginning of the end right there.
EVE got away with it because its a sci fi game in a very thin market.. The fantasy / sword , shield market is packed full of titles and it takes alot more than potential to get people to play.
Yep, saw that earlier. If someone does not have a good experience in MO, they call you a carebear and flame you. Saw my name in that thread a few times.

Many are saying it has potential and saying "content will be added after release" or they say "soon" Most of the reviews that have given it over a 5 have included the word "potential" That is a very bad place to be in an open beta, especially that it is launching in a few weeks.
I spent a couple of hours ingame now, after having to deal with frequent crashes after the most recent patch (fix was to edit a config file - but took a while to find the info).
On the plus side:
I like the look of the world - I think they accomplished something there.
Good AI, as far as I can tell (mob behavior)
You notice the freedom of game play - not like in most other recent releases.
Feels like a virtual world.
On the minus side:
Very rough in many parts - stuff not working, little to no explanation given for many of the mechanics
Desperatly needs a short tutorial to ease new players in
Character models are quite horrific
General remarks
They will have to really polish up the game before releasing it. This type of game is quite challenging to get into and if basic things are bugged (like crafting a bow, come on^^) or only possible to grasp after extensive research on the web, there is room for improvement imho. That being said, it is a very different approach to gaming than say STO, WOW or all the other themeparks out there. There is noone telling you what to do - so you better do what you think is fun. Accomplishment in this game is to figure things out, maybe finally get that sword crafted after hours of learning the trade, finding resources etc, not some loot drop from a mob or a 'level up'.
Not for everyone, and not ready for release either imho.Defenitely Alpha state.
1) Eve is enjoyable (to me at least) because despite not being a themepark it has the themepark typical features that I enjoy the most. difficulty comes from your brain, not your hands. That's why it "got away with it"...not because its sci-fi and not fantasy.
I disagree.. EVE had time to become a decent game because there was no competition in the genre. Had there been any at all then the game probably would have never had more than 50,000 players if that. Games in the fantasy genre do not have 1 year or more to hammer out problems since people will leave to another game.
EVE got lucky.. But I have heard being lucky is better than being good but it played a large part of the game being a success.
So at least 12.4% of people who voted are bat shat crazy. This is what i got from this thread
I voted a 1 because this is the only OPEN beta I have ever played that was unplayable. I have played unplayable closed beta but not open beta. Great job MO you have been the worst game i have ever played in open beta!!!
Currently Playing: Fallen Earth Played and liked: TCOS, Vanguard, Guild Wars, DDO Played and didn't like: CO, MO, STO, DF, AoC, WAR, WoW, EQ2, EVE, most f2p Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, Secret World

I gave it a 3.
As much as I love to see a game like this to succed, there is very little fun at the moment.
Too many broken features, plenty of bugs and awfully unstable client.

Rating is purely subjecting of course so please take following lines as such.
The game has everything I generaly do not like in MMORPG - 1st person view, open world, FFA PVP.
I could somehow bear on those concepts because what I dislike about it the most is mostly 'dumb' implementation.
This will sound harsh but when I saw the amount and nature of bugs, I had to ask myself: How does it hold together?
I don't mind amateur made games but the price they are asking is not reflecting their knowhow.
I'm missing another option "can't rate because i couldn't get an impression of the game due to nonstop slideshow or crashing".
