Asheron's call.
Huge world that was all about exploring and the game was a loot junkies dream of which i am one.
Everquest.
It was the first game outside of muds where I was able to play with people from all over the world in a fantasy type setting. Lot of great memories with that game although I think more than anything else the reason I'm so fond of it is because it was technically the first mmorpg I really got my teeth into and made more than a few friends through. I look back now and wonder how I could stand playing that game but at the time it was my favorite thing to do when I had free time to spare.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
About 10 years ago, game called Tibia. Still no game could provide me such a great time, no game could replace that system, drama, 2d graphic, and world eot. :]
Sorry for my eanglish.
i tried eq1 but i only really started to after going in a netcafe.back then warcraft 3 was the rage ,later l2,wow .l2 at a point had insane amount of player i recall seeing wave and wave of player in there even in wow i never saw that!but then instancing wasnt the norm.
Ultima Online. Great game.
Everquest.
Loved it because it was like playing PnP Dungeons and Dragons with hundreds of different people.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
Never really tried Everquest 1/2 Would you recommend it?
Cheers,
Dan

My first was Everquest 1, long ago in its early days. What's funny is, when I bought it, I didn't know it was an mmo. I logged on and it took me a few minutes before realizing, oh wow, there are other people in here with me lol. Now that's being a noob.
EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

Gemstone III. Was text-based MMO and I never really learned it, but it has persistent characters in an online multiplayer world and it had penalties for making stupid mistakes.
First visual MMO I played was EQ, followed by AC, DAOC, Shadowbane, and a host of others.
Frankly, I have not seen a "true" MMO since 2004. Seems the linear, story-based "Adventure-type" games have adopted online play and monthly fees, and new players do not realize what they have missed.
Tibia!
"EVE is likely the best MMORPG that you've never really understood or played" - Kyleran
RuneScape. I half-count myself as an old sandbox vet, since RS is more a sandbox than, say, WoW. Moved on to DAoC after about a year and a half.
greatest game ever still playing it sometimes on Server 101
The first MMO i played that got me addicted was >>> EARTH & BEYOND! .... wow i miss that game.
Vanilla WoW was my first MMO, I did not know there much such thing as MMO's before a friend showed it to me. First time I played an MMO/WoW was on my Orc in Durator where I logged off under water and logged in again drowned. I miss good MMO's.
Funny maby, but my first mmo was the old runescape (so not the one there is now, and also not the version without the graphical upgrades but the version before that, it doesn't exist annymore I think) (means I'm a sandboxvet? isn't? )
After that I played rubies of eventide, but they pulled the plug out of it..
And then the old vanilla wow came out and I bought myself a copy :-)
And after wow there came... I dunno, LOADS of mmo's
-------------------------------------------------------------------
waiting for ... nothing..
First mmo I ever played was a strategy text online game called "Forgotten world" the name has been changed to and is now still running as "shadowmere". (1998)
First mmorpg was FFXI. (2004)
Lineage 2..was and still is on of the most popular MMos in greece
Hurah...... Meridian / NWN and UO remembering which came first is hard... unless I make an effort and check.
All great fun. And all had to be played, thats right you had to play the game no paint by numbers oh no!!!!
