UltimaOnline, I miss the old days of raising a skill instead of static levels. It was pretty fun and the real risk and reward of being able to kill anyone or be killed by anyone and loot everything they had on them......
I messed around with BBS games and MUDs, stuff like that but...
I guess my first was UO. The idea was awesome to me. I didn't play too long however. The game itself was just not that fun in my opinion. Hitting training dummies, killing rabbits, and mining over and over and over was just brutally boring. A few of my friends continued to play it for quite some time. I had more fun listening to their stories than actually playing it myself.
Vagabond's Quest http://www.netdragons.com/games/vq1/ Its been hacked to hell and back. dunno if you can even play it anymore, but when I was 12...man...loved it.
The Realm, and apparently it is still running which is suprising. It was a 2D game where it actually did the old school King's Quest style of scrolling the next screen into view when you walked off screen. Turn based instanced combat too.
From there I followed along with what came out:
UO - once they implemented the Red Blue Grey crap I tried out EQ
EQ - no where near as fun as original UO so I didn't stay long. The RvR server they created was fun for a bit but it shrunk down in player size too fast. The first week of it was amazing though.
AC - still tied for my favorite of all time next to original UO, which means it is the only favorite that still exists.
DAoC - Very fun, but at the time my computer tended to hang in the battleground which sucked since that was where the most fun was at. FFA PvP server was nuts.
Planetside - Had fun in that for a few months despite the MAJOR balance issues between sides. I purposely picked the least balanced side everytime they rebalanced gear. It was fun to get your shotgun mech inside a building and just tear people up. They really need to make PS 2.
I've tried many others over the years AO, Neocron, WoW, EQ II, Horizons, Vanguard, DDO, LotRO, WAR, AoC, etc etc. Despite everything I've played, AC and Original UO are still the best ever made. At this point though I would love a new planetside style game, great action and fun that you didn't have to worry about setting up a 3 hour block of play time. You could log in and be in the action very quickly and then leave when you were ready. Maybe the Modern Warfare rumored MMO will be like that though.
Lineage 2. meant to just try it out for a week just to see what online games were about and stayed for over 4 years.
Same here. A friend was bugging me to play WoW, and I agreed to... but only for the first month *sigh*.
I'd rather game as LAN parties with my own mods (half the fun is building things). I think I'm a closet DM wanna-be.
Ken Fisher - Semi retired old fart Network Administrator, now working in Network Security. I don't Forum PVP. If you feel I've attacked you, it was probably by accident. When I don't understand, I ask. Such is not intended as criticism.
Enjoyed exploring stuff for the first few weeks, still enjoyed being part of the world for the next couple of months.
But my enjoyment quickly dropped because of the grind and it crashed when I hit the solid walls that were build around crafting and to some extend, community by the veterans.
Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!
The first one I ever tried was Ultima Online back in 1997. A friend had an account and I gave it a try for about an hour before I got killed and turned into a ghost.
My first real MMO experience, however, came with the launch of EverQuest. I played EQ from launch until the Ykesha expansion.
Ultima Online, but only briefly. Was not a fan of the rampant PK'ing.

We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." I don't think Diablo 1 could be classified. Honestly, WoW was my first....the irony is I have been a PC gamer since i was 5 (only 30 still, which is still a little young...i think? lol). I just never upgraded my PC because I did not have the money. I finally got a 'dream' PC is 2008 so then I started to branch out to other MMOs. So because WoW was able to run on my then, low end, PC it was my first. Unlike a lot of people I don't hate on WoW. I never hate on anything and wish for it to lose money, it just seems wrong...I am happy that WoW introduced me into the MMO genre and will always respect it.
EQ1 way back before it even had expansion packs. My friends and I had no idea what we were doing, so we ended up just wandering around for a few years while making eight billion alts. When Vellious came out we tried to explore it with lvl 7s Brings back memories; good times
Meridian59, followed by Ultima Online, but it was Star Wars Galaxies that gave me love towards MMORPG's in how I hoped this genre would evolve into. Unfortunaly for my wants and needs this genre took a totally different direction.
EQ, after Kunark was already out in 2000. Before that I tinkered a little with MUDs, as I was using the internet since '95.
Prior to that I also ran my own BBS for a good while in the early 90's called Reaper's Scythe. One of the DOOR games I had running was L.O.R.D.(Legend of the Red Dragon). I actually lived near (and met) the guy that created that game before he sold it - at least I heard it was sold at one point.. Anyway, i'm sure anyone that ran or at least used BBS's back then is familiar with LORD.
But back to the topic, EQ was my first true MMO. I've tried to go back, but it is so far removed from the game it used to be that it's not really like going back anymore. My server back in the day was Solusek Ro. I ran a guild called Temple of the Wolf in the early days.
These days I'm playing DAoC again, which was my second great MMORPG. I have just as many geat memories in DAoC as I do in EQ to be honest.
Anarchy Online was my first if you don't count some free trial of EverQuest some years earlier which only was like 30 minutes.
Weird thing that with the 30 minute trial but that was when EQ was new I guess and I had gotten it from a computer magazine.
I made an avatar which took about 20 minutes and fiddled with the controls for the next 10 minutes before it all ended, worst trial experience ever.
I played Anarchy Online from december 2004 when it was free to play to about march 2005 when the boring missions made me quit.
I have tried on several occassions to get back into AO but the dated graphics, clunky controls and boring missions where it took longer to get to the small dungeon where the mission took place then the duration of the actual mission made me quit.
I did that wind dungeon place too but it was just stupid with running the gauntlet inside narrow corridors with numerus mobs standing in rows.
And I even tried AoC, funcoms second MMO and it wasn't good enough for me but better than AO so maybe TSW will be funcoms first decent MMO?
All those memories will be lost in time, like tears in the rain.

The first MMO I played was UO, and have played quite a few other MMOs since then.
Haven't really gone back to other types of games since.
Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.

Gemstone II
Gemstone II 1987 Newb.....
1991 - Neverwinter Nights on AOL, then Ultima Online, and then Everquest.
Those 3 were the start of the revolution and were just amazing games.
Hopefully we continue to get more games that evolve the medium and less that are junk copies.

Strangely enough, I think my first mmorpg was Planetside

I do not miss 10 second lag
1991 - Neverwinter Nights, I feel old now
Before that we had MUDs, first one I played was back in 1989 called Federation 2, my first online game.
I feel old now, anyone seen my Bengay?
Gemstone III, then Dragonrealms
