After being a Pro at Quake 2 for years, A guy in my Clan started playing Everquest. I installed the game one day and thourght "What a load of shit". Back then I didn't even know what an MMO was.
I think Planetside was the 1st MMO I really got into, that game was amazing.
About 10 years ago, game called Tibia. Still no game could provide me such a great time, no game could replace that system, drama, 2d graphic, and world eot. :]
Tibia for me as well.
Played Counter-Strike for a couple years with my buddies as my first true online game. I was always a fan of rpg's so I thought, well maybe there is an rpg game online I could play. Did a search and saw a game called Tibia that was free to play. So I played it and grew addicted to this type of gaming. Played it for quite a few years. Think it was October of 01. Deuce and Green Gangsta were my names if you played on Amera.
1st MMORPG for me was UO bbut for years before that on the old BBS systems before the internet was available to the general public, we played tradewars and several other titles where people took turns logging in to send their time/turns trading goods, upgrading ships, taking over planets and such, of course it was all text. Land of Devestation actually had a client to download so yuo could get all of 16 color graphics but both games you could encounter the other players characters and interact with them.
I loved TradeWars on the single line BBS's, but when we had it real-time on a multi-line MajorBBS, that rocked. There were a couple of those big MajorBBS systems that also had local MUD-like games. (I ran a Telegard BBS with TradeWars and Usurper being the most popular door games among my users.) AAAAAH! NOSTALGIA ATTACK!
With that said, UO in 1997 was my first "real" MMO. And EQ was my first MMO addiction.
Tradewars FTW! Best game I ever played on my C64 and my 300 baud modem! Played on a BBS called Tolenkar's Lair ... those were the days!
FFXI was my first. I loved it because it was my first experience in a MMO. What really stood out to me after trying other MMOs was the sense of danger in the game. You never really knew how strong the enemy was, only an idea. They would also chase your ass through the zone. Skill Chains were also great, but pretty difficult to remember for a noob. I also found subjobs to be pretty damn cool (yet also very annoying because you had to level again).
Too bad it was too grindy for me. I made it to my 40s or 50s on my main job before I left. Hopefully 14 will be less grindy.
UO 98, loved it becaue I could create my own character, own and customize house and play an actual non-combat charater and be productive to name a few.
My first MMO was DaoC and I fell in love with the green land of Hibernia and played it from 2002-2006 fantastic memories and my current partner I met through the game too - so many good memories *sighs*

and DAoC was easier for me as I grew into my new gaming home!

Dreamcast version of Phantasy Star Online was my first.

Same here. Going from a regular geeky kid to a gamer only took EQ Online Adventures and DAoC for a couple months.
earth and beyond
i loved that if u wanted you could just be a merchant or explorer
fighting was mostly optional
and the ecconomy was very strong with player made goods preferable to vendor goods

Phantasy Star Online gave me the first taste of MMO.
Ragnarok Online gave me the whole package.
Spent all my free time grinding until level 99.
Ultima online which lead me to a whole host of new games, everquest 1 was the one I played for the longest time.
UO 98, loved it becaue I could create my own character, own and customize house and play an actual non-combat charater and be productive to name a few.
If MUDs count, it was Nightfall. Back in 1991 or 1992, not sure.
If it has to be a graphic MMO, it was Lineage 2. I didnt liked the game much, as it was so opposite of my idea of gaming, but a friend was playing it.
Then I had Vanguard ... best game ever, except bugs, lack of devs, lack of players. Oh well.

What's this doing back on the front page after 9 months?

My first MMO was DaoC and I fell in love with the green land of Hibernia and played it from 2002-2006 fantastic memories and my current partner I met through the game too - so many good memories *sighs*
Phantasy Star Online
Still the best MMO ever made.
I dont think PSO is an MMO. Its more or less a chat hub for people to do missions together.
Anarchy Online
SWG!!!
UO... getting ganked by tank mages ftw
