Since we are at least a year away from release, the game you are seeing now will probably change some before it is released. Basically they are letting small groups see what they have done and finding out what is good and what is bad. Hopefully they will eliminated or alter the bad. It is nice to hear about what they have done so far.
From someone who isn't a SW fan/geek, the whole thing about the game 'judging' a gamers moral compass and how this would be a put off from playing, is a very long way from important, at all.
It's just a game, everyone knows we are getting the good/neutral/bad decisions it will have no reflection on who you are at all beyond the abilities and story you will see in game. It's just another way of speccing your character whilst tying that into your story, nothing more.
That's missing the point a bit though. These morality meters aren't limited to Star Wars games; they are a growing trend throughout the medium of video games (largely thanks to Bioware and other key developers). They cleverly sidestep imposing a strict morality through the games by labeling the values something other than "good" and "evil" (like Paragon and Renegade in Mass Effect, or Light and Dark Side in their Star Wars games). However, you could argue that constantly presenting moral and ethical questions as two-dimensional to a wide audience could be detrimental to the moral fabric of those people because it doesn't necessarily challenge them to think of moral questions in a serious light. If games are ever going to be considered an artform rather than mindless entertainment, then that's a discussion that needs to happen at some point, whether everyone thinks that way or not.
Ya know, as much as I am a Star Wars fan... the Jedi vs Sith moralities always stand like a huge obstacle in the way. How denying love can be counted "good" and betraying them is beyond me. The Jedi code is just absurd, leaving emotions and personal feelings aside sounds like being a robot. And the Sith ideal isn't better; letting your live be dominated by hate and anger... no thanks. If I were a force user I'd make my own way and be grey. Both ideologies are quite wrong IMO.
As long as games are just "kill 20 of X" it doesn't matter, but when story decisions are so closely led around these ideas... I am not sure how long I could go along with such stories, when my moral compass is so different from that set in the game stories.
No such thing as a 'wrong' ideology. Only less 'ideal' or not 'ideal' for others. But yeah, I hate both. I dislike how the dark side is bred by a bunch of pussies who basically had a temper tantrom. And how the light side is bred by dropping most regular human values.
Can't I just be 'bad' without having to being all emo about it
Really hope they add some form of open world pvp, by choice for the endgame fun later on.
Only thing they've said so far about open world pvp

Thier used to be a time that priest had a strick no relation code. nowadays they are alouwed to marrie. some are gay and a bunch gone real bad (see the news....)
thier plenty of real life exsamples for both the Jedi and sith idioly , your going to play a starwars game, so if your going to play a jedi your beasicly saying "ok now im a priest of light and I shall have no relation to anyone for it will cloud the force"
If your realy big on freedom of choise "i dont want any form of religion in my llife/gaming "you will play the smugler or any other Non-jedi-, Sith.
Then you probaly even get the chance to mock the "force" at times

Seriously, I think you may have missed the point. If the subject is not at a point in their life where they can see the game as a game and allow it in any possible way to effect their moral fibre then there will be far more detrimental influences in their day to day life than a game about Jedi. If people are looking towards a video game as a moral lighthouse then they are in trouble before they get anywhere near the game.
I intend to play sith, I intend to be the nastiest b'stard sith that ever graced a battlefield I will slice off babies heads and incinerate peacfull villages. I do not intend to continue these activities in the real world, the game has choices which sculpt the char not the gamer.

The game itself sounds promising. The combat seems fluid, the world big and the "individual instancing" thing seems to be used conservativly. But the only part that puts a huge thorn in this game is how single player it is and how "the story" is really over the top in the "heroic" kinda way.
The single player aproach really bugs me. Every class is a pet class with companions in the game and as much as i heard one doesn't need to group once till lvl 10 atleast. Even for bossess. And the story... Well i don't want to spoil it for anyone but if this kind of storytelling is going to be put though the game we will be killing the sith emperor before lvl 20 and becoming gods at endgame... I might be reading to much into this. Its all just glorified quests anyway.
I've been uplinked and downloaded, I've been inputted and outsourced. I know the upside of downsizing, I know the downside of upgrading.

So while I am not sure if I will play this game.. I love starwars and all but there just looks to be better titles up and coming. I might at least try it.. Does anyone know what the expected release date is? Thanks

Meh. One doesn't need to group to almost level cap in most MMORPG's like WoW, LotrO, AoC, Aion, you name it, and a lot of MMO gamers also really don't (besides in WoW doing dungeon runs over and over again), so what's new?
Besides, earlier demo reports already showed gamers teaming up right from the start, so for those who want to, they can.
The story, well, I guess we'll have to see how that'll go, but I very much doubt that BW will not be able to manage the pace throughout the levels. If they wanted to make it more interesting and adventurous right from the start, then I say 'good for them', it's a change from merely killing ten rats or bugs or goblins or whatever with little to no context to it.

The only thing that is confirmed is that it'll be in the time period of Apr 2011 to March 2012, beyond that it's just speculation.
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums: Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
Coming from Aion.. The whole you dont need to group in Aion while true means you will not do half the content.... Grouping in Aion is almost essential and its one of the things that I actually like about the game. The quests in Aion are so boring. It also takes twice as long to level in Aion by simply questing or solo grinding than it does if you can find a good group.
Alongside the fact they just fixed the Rifts so people are PVPing in quest areas again. YAY! Grouping makes life alot easier.
Like i stated above I might try this out.. Havent made a final decision. I almost see this coming out the same time as Rift and most likely will end up there.

AION is a eastern product , that means people love GRIND endless and tiresome GRIND
SWTOR is made for western AUDIENCE first , that means they want to give a purpose to Single Player audience who try to play MMO and trying to recreate that DnD table experience .
The grind will be there since all games have grind , just its hidden in a more complet package .
Rift is what i expect to be a western answer to people who want sandbox gamestyle gameplay again .
(no its not hardcore sandbox , or fit in everything you want it to be , but majority thinks of a sandbox game)
In a modern day package , i really hope rift will succeed .
SWTOR offers something for people who are finally burned up with the fantasy Genre , sorry so much you can do there.
Till people gets overburned , and its already happening !.
well, its easy to be positive if you gloss over the bad points, which i'll start with the PVP bit.. its 8 v 8.. and.. you have targets to achieve, its not about killing the enemy.. er.. what ? im assuming that in between doing a few meaningless chores in a battlefield environment that they actually do get to fight.. but.. its only 8 v 8.. why in all thats holy are the numbers so low? Even consoles manage better numbers than this, why even bother with PVP if its going to be such a half assed afair, this reminds me so much of the space 'tunnel shooter' that they are putting into the game, that i really do wonder if they even understand the concepts of what it is their trying to achieve... i wonder just how in touch with modern gameplay the OP really is.
few words for you: one type of PvP, really easy to be negative when you gloss over the postives.
They've already stated they are looking into other forms of pvp, one including if i'm not mistaken is suppose to take place in a ruined space craft.
Second they've already confirmed, which i've linked several times that there is going to be planets with open pvp.
Again: This is only one form of PvP.
Edit: not sure why i repeated myself when i should have just told you to go back to page 6 and look at my post there. i can understand skeptism but when you fail to read the thread in it's entirety when the answer is right there is beyond me. If you want proof of what i'm saying, go back to page 6 of this thread.

Interesting, how some people seem to gloss over the information available, and how they are so willing to accept one thing that's being said while at the same time repeatedly ignoring the other things that're being said.
Comments like this one from BW guy Stephen Reid for example:
First, regarding PvP, so far we've been focusing on the instanced Warzones in our initial reveals, but that is not the only form of player vs player gameplay in The Old Republic. We'll have more to announce in time.
And other statements like that, where open world pvp in select areas has already been announced.

so far the only actual numbers stated are 8v8 so until they give more information on the numbers for open world pvp, and how its handled, whether phased or instanced, and numbers involved.. the open world pvp bit is pure speculation, for the moment. 8v8 is all the numbers that are given. it might not be all that important to those who have no interest in pvp, and as this is clearly a pve centric game, i see no data other than 'it will have' which, is ephemeral at best, misleading at worst.
going by the quotes that the people working on the game themselves said, look at my quote on page 6. They distinctly said they will have open world pvp
Naturally they could be lying, but then so could any company. You have to, until you get proof to the contrary assume that what they are saying is in game.
Like Cypher posted they are concentrating on showing the warzones at this time. That doesn't mean that open pvp doesn't exist.
So far everything they have said woudl be in game has (as per released info) been in game.

Not only that, but they - or some people - are willing to believe one statement made if that fits their negative arguments, and ignoring the other statements made by the same people that contradicts those negative arguments they made. Now that's just crazy and illogical.

I don't typically read these things as I find that they are often eschewed with personal bias, but what a well written and professionally done article. I don't impress very much anymore, but that definitely impressed me. I loved everything that I read. I'm really looking forward to this game. I hope the combat is at least fun. Alot of MMO's I just find the combat a grinding clickfest. Hopefully this is alot more fun than most.

Well seems a good review , anyway no doubt in my mind this game can break open the MMORPG competition .
But then again nothing really new , i haven´t heard before , my money is already set on this product .
And about moral and diversity code dont like it , then dont play it .
Honestly the way Bioware setup the story and dark and light side choices .
Is up to you to decide how your sith and jedi going to come out .
By making YOUR own choices , not just press + and - for min maxing (even if thats going to be a issu later on)
Now i heard the crap about word twisting like heroic and all that other issues .
But if people dont like star wars and i believe enough people dont like that universe .
Nothing I or any other fan can do , to convince them otherwise .
Same way some dont like sci fi , and prefer there fantasy dragons .
This product might not be right for them , cause it is set in that universe and in that setting .
Anyway its up to people to use there own imagination , what they want to play .
Game is Polished , FUN is another concept cause thats up to the individual .
But saying the game is not polished in the areas you have to test , LMAO that means you either in the alpha XD
Bioware dont need beta testers for that .

No NO once a fiscal report is out the release date is set !!
Its set in spring 2011 , so it doesn´t mean march they can confirm that .
But from april -june 2011 , it will be released nothing Bioware as part of EA can do anymore to delay it futher .
This time its serious , so if they release it rushed or not all endgame in place , it has to be released in that period .
Or else some heads will roll !!
So its coming out on time , i dont expect all endgame pieces or planets to be in place .
But then again first MMO i think people cannot rush trough it , since chapter 5 also been finished .
Cause of cinematic and choices and forced story quest lines you have to follow !
Its already a enjoyable timesink watching most of those , they will slow down leveling pace a lot .
