Let's not jump down this guy's throat just because he may be unfamiliar with the game. For me, part of the reason I'm excited about Guild Wars 2 (and I'm sure this applies to many of you), is that it challenges us to think differently about MMOs. If you're a fan of the game, you've got to understand that a lot of traditional MMO gamers are going to react this way when they hear some of these things.
I realize you guys get hit with a lot of craziness here in our GW2 forums and so you may be a bit frustrated or suspicious someone is trolling, but frankly it takes less effort to give someone the benefit of the doubt and just answer their question (or point them to a handy thread or article that does). The guy made a perfectly reasonable post. Most of us are trained to think of MMOs and even RPGs this way, but it doesn't mean he wouldn't be able to see things differently if explained to or otherwise informed.
TL;DR: Expect a lot of people to not "get it" about GW2, and some of them may not ever get it, or won't get it until they try the game themselves. If you truly care about growing the GW2 community, your best is to be inclusive when these sorts of questions pop up.
Apologies if it sounds like I'm scolding you guys, but I've been seeing a lot of this lately and I wanted to chime in.
Or even people can just disagree with a view based on the the available evidence, rather than be misinforminated and need education to achieve the required groupthink.
Absolutely. Why would anyone believe that people that who disagree with something the game does just "doesn't get it", and needs to be indoctrinated to see the light of truth and start mindlessly droning "Everything GW2 does is awesome."
There are quite a few people that "get it" about what GW2 is doing. They get it, they just don't like it, and that's a legitimate opinion to hold.
The OP is pretty much factually correct in his statements. Opinions will vary on whether those facts about the game are a good thing, or a bad thing, according to each person's preference. Neither will be wrong, and it doesn't mean that someone with the audacity to say *GASP* something bad about GW2 "doesn't get it".
As far as I'm concerned, I was initially excited about GW2, but the more I hear, the more I believe it's an amalgamation of everything that has been going wrong with MMORPGs over the last 10 years. Creating an EZ-mode insta-max level toy PvP character for instance-based e-sport PvP would be just one such thing.
No one deserves to be flamed. If someone acts like an idiot, they've done all the work for you, you don't need to attack them for it. Aside from being an explicit violation of our Rules of Conduct, attacking them actually weakens your position and if they were wrong about something may even embarass them enough they aren't willing to come back, apologize, and continue the discussion. Negativity breeds negativity. I know this doesn't always happen, but if we all leap on someone every time something like this occurs we'll never have the chance to see it. You can't help the behavior of someone else, but you can help your own (this isn't directed at you, by the way). If we all lead by example we'll all benefit because the tenor of the overall community will be raised. People just looking to troll won't get the attention they want (you attacking them) and they will get bored and leave. The more abrasive types may dial things down when they receive a bunch of reasonable responses.
Again, I know many of you are frustrated posting in here day in and day out, but this is ultimately what it will take to improve things. If you don't feel you can respond to someone in a constructive manner, take a step back, breathe, and then respond when you can (or not at all!). If you truly feel someone is trolling, well, don't feed the trolls (and report the thread/post!).
Agreed. Simply explain why they are wrong in a civil tone, or report them if they are trolling.
Flaming people only leads to a bad forum and there are enough of those on the net already.
I have to admit that once in a while someone grind my gears but it is always best to ignore stuff like that instead of making things worse.
You guys are right of course. I mean, there's really no argument against being civil.
That said...this may sound bad, but the "intense" arguments are a large reason of why I come to this site. Even if I don't participate in them, I just find them entertaining...everyone getting worked up, using big fonts, different color schemes, spending hours to find some obscure quote to prove their point, etc...
If everyone acted civil all the time, this site would be a very friendly place...but it would also be pretty boring . I don't want this to turn into Forumfall either, but I also wouldn't want it to turn into the forum I went to when I was studying for the GMAT.
I thought mmorpgs were about progression, if I automatically wanted to get into the fray of things and have a game about 100% skill, wouldnt I play a twitched based FPS, mmorpgs should be 50% skill, 50% progression
It's...not...an...mmorpg.
They might call it that. It might be listed here. But it's not an mmorpg. It's an E-sport like SW:ToR. The lore is a joke, merely cosmetic so you have something to read about when you pick one of the 5 races that get to kill each other in a battleground or W v W v W. It's immediate gratification pvp with some pve tossed in for good measure.
It's not an mmorpg.
However, now that we've got that out of the way. You can still have fun with it. My ten yaer son like MW3 and Black Ops thoug he thinks GW2 looks too childish I still think it looks kind of fun
You are incorrect. It is a MMORPG. Get off your highhorse.
I find the psychology of folks who get so defensive over the obvious to be amusing. I never said the game wasn't fun, and I am sorry if somehow you felt belittled by my post to where you had to assume I was on a high-horse. It's not an mmorpg and you should know better as a consumer. That's all I am saying. Folks can say:
1. I'm ranting
2. I'm on a high-horse (as in the above)
3. I'm pretending to be smarter than someone (as one poster replied)
Again, I never said the game wouldn't be fun (my son doesn't think so but that's 1 opinion and he's 10). So instead of getting defensive, let's go for some constructive defense. Start with why you might believe this is an mmorpg? I stand by the E-Sport statement. Folks who never reached end game or played the first true mmorpgs such as ULTIMA, DAoC, EQ1, ASHERON'S CALL, etc., will have a very different opinion on just what an mmorpg is. Naturally, and no fault of their own, they will not be speaking from as much experience as the older gamers.
Again, that's just my opinion. An mmo R P G is about the RPG, not just the same mirrored classes and races fighting it out in a BG. That is just so hard for some folks to get these days. I do not blame them, however, I blame the industry that has dummed down what should be an amazing escape from real world activities. But there's no true lore in these games, it's cosmetic because they HAVE to have a few classes and races. They put a quick story in for Sylvari and Norns but never explain why these races kill each other or why they'd fight their own kind in the first place.
Imagine if Lord of the Rings was about hobbits elves and humans killing hobbits elves and humans. It wouldn't seem as epic now would it?
So folks, say what you want, but in ten years no one will say, "Oh man remember those glory days in GW2? Gosh golly we had some good moments."
Peruse threads on pvp and RPG - you'll see endless comments about Dark Age of Camelot, EQ, Ultima and so forth. That's because those are mmorpgs, GW2, however titled, is just a video game. And a fun looking one at that

It's all a matter of opinion basically.
I think there are two "camps" of games when in comes to MMORPGs. There are those that try to make the best and most fun "game" as possible with not much regard to creating a real virtual world (theme park). Then there are those that try to make a really deep and involved virtual world, without too much regard to if their systems are actual fun and balanced from a "game" standpoint (sandbox).
Personally, I enjoy games from both camps. But I can see where you would not like GW2 if you are firmly entrenched in the sandbox camp.
Why people get labled as a troll is not because of the content of their post but the tone in which they state their question or statement.
Tone is a two way street, and we shouldn't be judging people based on the tone of a post. If it's something a person doesn't like it's going to carry a negative tone, if it's something they do a postive one. It doesn't mean a person is trolling to express a negative tone.

I know someone's answered the prompt on this already...but from my experience with guild wars, the function to jump straight to pvp is because the end-game mechanics are so fine tuned and the differences so subtle from one character to the next that it really won't matter that they have the pvp gear and lvls immediately...the complexity of the skills and strategies of pvp in this game make it so that even if you start off all the same, its more about skill than it is about who has better gear (though this won't stop some influence of gear) think of it like CS...you all start in the same situation...no one person is more statistically stronger based of character level or stats...so in order to let pvpers participate immediately, and fairly against one another...this function actually removes alot of the animosity

It is true but you can tell fairly easily in a lot of cases if the person is just being confrontational. And there is certainly a better way raising a concern for a topic then the title of this thread for example.
However, its not the same as being a level 80 and zoning into the mists. Once you zone out you are back to what ever level you were, and obviously once you are 80 in good gear you will be better off than someone who is level 1 stepping in with nothing and being buffed to make it a competition.

Not at all, if we're talking about an actual RPG, especially one that's supposedly set in a persistent world with a virtual society that matters.
In an FPS or e-sport game, everyone being equal makes sense. That's never been the main focus of an RPG, however. In fact, it runs counter to the point of an RPG.
Meh, I'm not even going to bother. Thread has been answered, there is nothing more to discuss.
I'm going to play the Devil's Advocate here for a sec.
--{RPG fan sees what A-net is doing, thinks to themself, wait aren't they essentially removing the RPG part with mechanics like this? As that's what I play MMORPG's for, why would they trivialize these aspects, they're the best part?!?!}---
Legitimate opinion to have if you're an RPG fan IMO, and I can see that scratching someones back the wrong way; if they feel strongly about the direction of a genre they like. If it's okay to praise these choices A-net made, it's okay to express the opposite IMO. So I can't agree the thread has been answered in the way you're suggesting.
--{In my opinion}--- Post 8 answered this thread just fine. Short of the op coming back and posing a new question, what more could be added than what was already stated by Rizelstar?
Edit: I do wonder though what you said in post 13 to get a mod edit?
Added the bit in yellow for you. I would advise you not to discuss moderation discussions in public it's against ToS.

As for what Rizel said, a lot could be said really, is the E-sport really the direction this genre should be going? But I'll leave that for a different discussion.

Never entered Ilum, did they bump everyone up to max level there in SWTOR?
So let's say the instanced PvP (Conquest mode) is 1/3 of the game.
The PvE would then also be 1/3.
And W v W would also be 1/3.
Again, hypothetical just for the sake of argument.
So removing the "RPG" from the first third somehow makes the other 2/3rds "less RPG?"
I'm trying to understand how that makes sense...
If you are trying to say that "only 2/3rds of the game is progression based RPG and as such the game is less RPG than other MMORPGS" than I would agree with you.

I'm torn on the subject, I guess in the end it comes down to which takes off and gets the most love from the devlopment team. WHich I have a feeling will be the more BG oriented form of PVP sadly.

as long as there is no ignorance/misinformation presented,
I only get upset by the hyperbole when:
-people try to tell other people what they should think
-people try to tell other people they are wrong
-people think they are better for having their opinion
etc.
Spin is the enemy of all.
There is a BIG difference between saying-
"I don't think Guild Wars 2 is going to appeal to me."
and
"GW2 is a steaming pile of poo and ya'll are simpleton morons for liking it."
Unfortunately, I see a lot more of the later rather than the former on these boards.

It is true but you can tell fairly easily in a lot of cases if the person is just being confrontational. And there is certainly a better way raising a concern for a topic then the title of this thread for example.

"Gypsies, tramps, and thieves, we were called by the Admin of the site . . . "
GW is not exactly a mmorpg... its a different thing... a subgenre inside teh genre... one that is about having fun and kick some arse... Not about leveling up a bunch of levels and crap...
Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.

[mod edit - deleted content is deleted for a reason]

But I also don't see that as a bad thing.
I don't think so...
But you could get banned for going to Illum at low level and looting chests .
Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?
How odd.
So then it really isn't like SWTOR.
I'm torn on the subject, I guess in the end it comes down to which takes off and gets the most love from the devlopment team. WHich I have a feeling will be the more BG oriented form of PVP sadly.
