Absolutely. I'm going to assume it wasn't #1, let alone listed, because it was sunset a few days before this article.. And no EQ2 on the list at all. Tsk Tsk.
I can usually somewhat agree with the lists here. Not today.
FFXIV has the best crafting hands down because of one main thing it seems most are neglecting. crafting is not only about crafting an item but how it is tied to other systems in game and the world as a whole. Only in FFXIV where crafting is linked to many aspect in the game that require you indulge in many different areas to become competitive and gives you chance to control economy.

This is why I like FFXIV the most (of current games), because you are very useful in many ways other than just crafting gear. ESO is high up on my list because you are also very useful to players, but less than FFXIV because it's almost all gear/potions/etc.
Hands down SWG with its ever changing resource stats had a system that was so far and above anything before or since. It is really to bad that the devs at SWTOR did not take more from SWG when developing that game, maybe it would have been worth a subscription fee.
I would give my $15 a month to play an updated and redeveloped SWG NGE right now.
Give me back SWG at sunset and keep adding to it and I would pay twice what it was costing.
Definitely the best list so far. I see a lot of games mentioned that are average crafting at best or people thinking over complicated crafting in games is actually a good thing. Being chained to a crafting table for hours to prevent damage or to make it a tiny bit better during crafting is complete garbage. Primary test should be how useful the crafting system is to the game.
nothing comes close to swg imo. i spent 3 months without even putting a weapon in my hand , and it was the most fun ive had in an mmo up to that point.
have to say i dont understand at all why so many people like eve online crating - i think it is quite terrible, if they didnt changed it a lot in last 2 years.
eve online is amazing in trading area, but in crafting it is imo quite bad - just collect a lot of mats then craft predetermined item by clicking craft and waiting for timer.

wurm is amazing in what it does allow to do, but process itself is not that amazing. results of the crafting were also quite dull until they added chance of crafting rare and better versions.

I think your statement would be much better if you let us know which crafting engine you prefer.
Which game is better at crafting in your judgement?

I think the article rolls around far too often. When was the last "best MMO crafing systems" article published? Feels like it was earlier this year & SWG was top?
Anyway I can't believe GW2 crafting has made into this top 5 and EVE's didn't.
I can tell after reading peoples' reasons why FFXIV's crafting should not be on the list are obviously people that have not played FFXIV since the first so and so months of the game. I read reasons such as the crafting is not rewarding or viable, the economy is not player driven, or it's 1 click crafting. Those that say 1 click crafting have not crafted in FFXIV, so I'm not even taking their comment seriously. As for everyone else; those that talk about it not being rewarding or viable, or the economy not player driven I can already tell have not played the game since those things were true. Not so much now. The crafting in FFXIV is extremely rewarding and viable, the economy is player driven, and it is extremely balanced as the market is never 1 sided. I have been playing MMOs since EQ1 and have played pretty much every major MMO. FFXIV has by far one of the best crafting systems and markets I have seen. If you were to rewind to the first so and so months of the game I would not call it the best, but with additions from various patches that have been released it is far and away superior to what it was closer to launch. So unless you have crafted in the past few months at endgame crafting levels, your comments cannot even be considered as valid reasons anymore, and the system is even better since 2.3 released early July with desynthesis and other additions. Even before endgame crafting there is plenty of ways to make good gil from crafting.
You know when a crafting system is good when after 14 years of the game being out i can log in right now and make money by dyeing peoples armor, making arrows for people or tinkering their armor/weapons for better stats.
Asherons Call 1
highly over looked because its a older game but very good system.
and the best part? you dont sit there and make 200 wood long bows or 500 iron short swords to level up your crafting skill.
you go out and kill shit and quest and raise those skills as you want with xp you earn. no need to sit there and craft worthless shit just to level up the skill.
I would have had LotRO on there because it's very detailed and offers a variety of ways to obtain a similar goal with the singles recipes that can be found in guilds.
SWG and FF14 would have been switched for me. SWG as well as LotRO offer NPC rewards versions in vendor style situations but they don't show favoritism. It's very much a choice. FF14 on the other hand showed blatant favoritism toward the reward gear issued by NPC vendors and left the crafted stuff far behind in quality.
I wouldn't say FFXIV: ARR is the best in crafting. I agree with what others have said where the system requires a lot of steps and wasted time that just aren't needed for a crafting system. At this stage in the game any crafted items are quickly replaced so crafting's two uses are vanity and food buffs, maybe some potions. Not to mention the grind involved in order to craft the so called 2-star plus items.
I'm not saying I wish the crafting system in FFXIV: ARR was a one click system but at the same time I just don't feel it is a system worth the title of the best crafting.
The amount of people who have not crafted in FFXIV and GW2 since ascended items and backpieces were added is staggering...
That's cool though.

So, food buffs, potions, furniture and decor, pets, gc turn ins, retainer outfitting, desynth, spiritbond, melding, levemetes, glamours, dyes, musical instruments, crafting stations, chocobo stables, bis gear for non combat profs, and two star crafts on par with entry raid gear is not important to you?
Comments
Like many have said; EVE, UO and Vanguard should be in there.
EVE because it actually has a market for crafting.
UO since you could craft almost anything, not just PvE/PvP items, but furniture, decorations etc.
... and Vanguard, because it had what FF XIV has, only better. In my opinion of course.

Edit: plus FFXIV has crafting gear sets
So stupid article. He says in the end he left out Eve and ArcheAge for a multitude of reasons...,
What those reasons are? Nobody knows. Brilliant job lol.
Also Ultima Online and EverQuest maybe? The hell is this top 5?
