... and who says everything needs to be new. Just the amount of details and polish will carry far.
LoL is not the first MOBA and yet it created a new genre. Wow is not the first MMO but it changes the genre. There are plenty of example that you don't have to do it first .. just have to do it well.
A generic IP?
Online matchmaking with 3 or 6 players and 0 communication with players you see around the world?
Sorry, the game is definitely a regular FPS, I'd rather play Borderlands.
Sounds like a good direction of MMO to me. It is not like people love to talk in MMOs.
Oh, don't get me wrong ... i would rather play Borderlands too (although it is not fair since I have yet to try Destiny), but is devs going to notice a game that makes $325M in 5 days ... or Borderlands ... a less financially successful (though still successful) game.
People don't love to talk in MMOs but its pretty awful without being able to say anything. This game has meh 77 review from critics and is even lower ranked from users. It's looking like something of a bust not a boom - truth. I Had high hopes for it too but its a letdown.
It's been a rough streak for gamers lately with ESO, Wildstar and now Destiny being a let down. Sure its not a 'pure' MMO - but close enough. Likewise if Fallout IV stinks people are going to be very unhappy.
The main problem with Destiny is its not moving the genre of gaming forward. MMOs have been stagnating since EQ - adding some albeit nifty combat mechanics doesn't seem to be enough. Gaming companies need to think about making a game that changes depending on the needs and actions of the players.. even in an MMO as next gen features.
We are not there yet. Right now Destiny is looking like an inferior more expensive version of borderlands..

Or may be MMO should just learn from Borderlands.
I think some games could learn from BL2. For one, it has sold over 8.5M copies making it 2K games most successful offering. It also has a very cool grouping/multi-player mode, at least I think so. I love how I can play through my story and invite my son into my game for help or just to blow stuff up and I don't have to deal with a large group of people I don't want to. In many ways grouping in BL2 is way more satisfying than most MMOs.
I'm not sure comparing it to Bungies' offering is fair since Destiny is really riding on the coattails of Halo and has a massive advert budget. It would be a little more fair to compare Destiny to GTA V which also has a huge budget and hype train behind it. Now Destiny doesn't seem so successful does it. For reference GTA V has sold over 32.5M copies and grossed over $2Bn. So success and what devs should do is a matter of perspective. BL2 is still insanely successful for any game and something noteworthy. GTA V has spawned a lot of games in a similar vein, so I expect some devs to continue chasing what Bungie has done.
I don't think that means Destiny is the way of the future. The industry and its customers are too diverse to make such simplistic broad claims.
It is not as much as Destiny is the future (it is just one game) but MMOs can learn from other successful online games (like BL2, D3, MOBAs ....).
