I did this type of skill based repetitive gameplay back in my youth. I played the original Gran Turismo and got the A license, which if no one thinks is an achievement: I beg to differ. I spent days and months repeating races until I got them perfect and I was quite proud of the achievement. Do I want to do it again today? No way!!
I don't think it is an achievement. I think it is a waste of time learning totally artificial patterns that have little impact on your life.
Well I would call it an achievement in persistence Nari! Essentially one mistake in a race or time trial and you were forced to restart. Each race had to be done perfectly.
Anyway it was a good feeling to get it, but would I do it again? Not likely, once was enough. Too much time, too much effort and too much frustration for what is supposed to be enjoyable.
Kind of like the old school MMO.
You can .... we simply disagree of what an achievement is.
Oh, i have no doubt that it felt good getting it, and it took effort. But it is a completely artificial set up that devs created for no other purpose than entertainment.
Don't get me wrong .. i have done that kind of things too. In my case, it was hard mode raid in WoW (back in WOTLK). Oh it felt good. Now I wish I did not waste so much time on it. It was just a game.
Originally posted by Nemesis7884 i understand where the op is coming from but its always kinda easy to say "you simply dont get this"... the truth of the matter is - stuff moves on... and you should too
I have moved on but it doesnt mean i wont fight for a things we want or need in games, if people didnt then devs will release nothing but crap.
If you want to fight for anything .. here is the wrong place to do so. You don't think you are changing minds, do you?
The only way to "fight for" anything ... in the case of gaming ... is to vote with your dollars. Anything else is just chit-chat.
First of all if people cant handle critical thinking then they need to grow thicker skin period, it was not a direct insult at all, its not my fault that these newer generations do not like to listen to anyone but themselves, people in our gens actually did listen to an extent and where not special snowflakes and act like babies everytime someone does not agree with there views.
Also this has nothing to do with grinding, when your in a amazing community while getting awesome rewards as you level that isnt grinding people, raiding for gear is far more grindy then older mmorpgs, and on top of all that you don't notice the grind as your constantly having fun anyways that is why they where longer is because there where more rewards as you leveled always had some sense of rpg progression other then gear and story if there was any story to begin with.
Also if the game is good enough the servers would not be dead, and you can easily incooperate a system to lower your level for other players.
"Back in my day we had to kill 6,000 goblins to get 1% xp. You new gamers want everything handed to you!!!"
This is an MMO, a game, not a second job. I dont want to feel like I'm doing chores, I want to enjoy myself.
Spot on. Despite most conversations on the topic being "Back in my day..." followed by "OMG, that sounds absolutely terrible," they'll still contend the issue isn't that a lot of old 'gameplay' sucked ass, but that the new generation of gamers are lesser beings for one reason or another.
Yea nice stereotyping there, we all think like that and thats exactly what I typed out in my topic, and by the way I never played an mmorpg with huge grinds, longer yes but grinding no, maybe your thinking of korean mmorpgs.

Exactly. Plus the combat, outside of PvP, was very stale.
Old school gamers claim the games back then were deep. They can't be talking about the combat. I could step away from my PC during combat in SWG and people read books in EQ whilst fighting.
Every now and then, a new guy just wants to climb up onto the soap box and read his sermon.
It's a hackneyed old sermon, but it feels new to him (we assume).
Life outside the seminary iz hard.
And that is the issue with younger gamers, no respect and no idea what they are talking about, I do not want to hear myself but nice try kiddo.
Hear that, Antiquated? It's youngin's like you that are the problem! *shakes cane at Antiquated*
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein "Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre

Lol random people thats typical new age mmo attitude which in first place have totally ruined grouping with random people.
Random groups worked perfect in Asherons call2 back in 2002-3 with fellow(party) of 9 players. And mny dungeon runs with several fellows(parties) with random people also always worked in this game 99% of time.
It even still worked when AC2 was relaunched in 2012 and today 2015.
So the random attitude is fault of stupid mmoprgs like WoW(experienced this also in GW2 in 2014 terible anti social behavior) who totally destroyed this kind of group of anti social behavior most have these days.
Hope to build full AMD system RYZEN/VEGA/AM4!!!

Right I never had issues finding groups in other games, maybe people who acted like they do in this thread because they get put on ignore in that kind of community.
Old school gamers claim the games back then were deep.
Well I dion't. I was in on SWG at the start and I don't remember too many 'deep' quest setup's. Lot of quick one liner's if anything. There was 1 space mission where the guy wanted you to kill a merchant ship cuz the guy had sold him some hair tonic that didn't work. Atleast some of the follow on games the writing got better.
I enjoy the AoC quests and the DMing on some of the DDO quests are fun, but having to camp an area for that certain NPC to show up way back when sucked. I remember getting up at 5am once just to get to the NPC (that only spawned once a day) first to complete a quest line.
As to group vs solo. I generally like solo play and hated basically being forced to group for some of the low level LotRO quests but on the other hand grouping for the weekly SWG space PVP was a blast!
FF11, 0 solo content after 20 and my fav all time MMO experience. Sure it could be a serious pain finding a good pug, but that game was so hard at higher levels that if you made a single mistake everyone noticed and would just kick you. So either you get good at your job or you dont get xp. More games need checks and balances like this imo.
OP is trying to say unless you actually experienced something, you cannot have a discussion about it. Welp, there goes the point of history and books in general.

what ... people will actually response?
Usually i just ignore them ... why even waste time telling them why? It is not like i need them to invite me again in the future.

Swing and a miss. What were you saying about stereotyping just a few posts up?
Ok buddy whatever helps you ignore everyone but yourself keep up the good work im sure it will serve you well in the real world.

Strike two.
They do. Had to teach my teenager how it worked though ....
SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter
