The tl;dr version is who is stupid enough to buy something if they dont thin it will give them an advantage? And secondly who in their right mind would buy another something that doesnt give you an advantage to help develop a game that has already raised 168 million plus for development?

Not everyone is like you, @rodarin

Some support a project NOT to gain an advantage, but because it is a good idea.

Holy Neptune those are some heavy semantics.

It's just another way to fund and support the most ambitious game of all time.
It's not the most ambitious game of all time, even if that were a good thing.  Dwarf Fortress?  Spore? No Man's Sky ("Every Atom Procedural")?

At the end of the day it's not ambition that matters, but how those ambitions are executed and delivered.  Star Citizen has yet to deliver (unless you admit you are currently playing the consumer product) so "most ambitious game of all time" isn't necessarily a good thing, even if it were true.

You remind me of those cultists back in 2013 who strenuously claimed one isn't "buying" ships but receiving "gift for gift".
Are you seriously comparing those games to Star Citizen in terms of ambition? That's amusing.

Well, ambition matters quite a bit - as does its execution. I mean, without the ambition, there would be nothing to execute.

But you're very right, execution is very important - which is why I'm very supportive of CIG and their approach of laying all the groundwork before building the game.

That's something most developers would never do, because no publisher would risk it - and no business-oriented enterprise would want to demonstrate the reality of revolution as it would not maximise profit.

I consider it a minor miracle that there are enough visionary backers out there with the will to invest in something this bold and visionary.

I would never have expected that.

Thankfully, it seems the ignorant detractors staring themselves blind at the size and profit involved are in the minority.

It all feels like a giant win to me - and I'm glad.

That's not to say I don't enjoy pointing out the countless examples of misinformation perpetuated by the ignorant. It's amusing to me that you have nothing but conspiracy theories to fall back on - time and time again.
Yes, the case can be made that Dwarf Fortress is a more ambitious game than Star Citizen (try the link).  Same can be said for No Man's Sky, especially during its development cycle.  Maybe do a little research before laughing off a viewpoint that doesn't conform to your worldview.

I'll assume you aren't calling all detractors "ignorant", otherwise... well, the thing speaks for itself.

wow the shills are in full force this morning, maxesque in their responses to every single post.

Critics must have really hit  a nerve.

It can be spun just like I said in that 'diatribe'.

You really can't grasp the concept of supporting the game for no other reason than to support it, can you? :)

I wonder if you're aware that some people have more money than they know what to do with.

The "advantage" you're talking about is like the little plastic toys you sometimes get when you buy a Happy Meal.

They get a cool ship as a symbol and a pat on the back.

Really sad how you can't understand what it means to support something simply because you believe it's worth supporting.

There's a reason they're calling them pledges, by the way. It actually means something.

A case can be made for everything - it makes the suggestion no less ignorant and ridiculous to me.

That's not to say I don't think Dwarf Fortress was a cool ASCII rogue-like with a neat spin, though.

No Man's Sky was hollow and utterly void of interesting content. For a small team, it was cool - but the ambition was certainly not executed upon very well. I knew that going in, because I understand what it means to have limited manpower and going 100% procedural. Seems people who bought into the hype didn't quite grasp that.

    To each his own, though.

I've yet to see an argument against Star Citizen from a detractor that didn't smack of ignorance. Well, not true - most arguments are actually based on conspiracy theories - which is probably not the same concept.

    But ignorance seems kinder.

Also, the very notion of suggesting that No Man's Sky is more ambitious than Star Citizen tells me you're not only ignorant of Star Citizen (probably also of NMS) - but SUPREMELY ignorant.

As in, you're not really doing a great job at being convincing in terms of your position.

SC used to be cutting edge in terms of graphical presentation, that argument has been losing its sharpness.

DF lacks graphics, yes, but it simulates thousands of years of history down to procedurally generated cultures and musical styles.  Its creator considers it about 40% completed.

LMAO 'support' Ok here it goes... anyone that want to use that bullshit line give me every single ship you have gotten from youre 'support' of the project. I will set up a legit website and charity where I will take every ship (people think arent pay to win) and I will auction them off (to people who do think theyre pay to win) and that money will be donated to people who actually need it somewhere.

So those ships you guys pledged money and got as a reward will then be paid forward two fold. You supported your hero and now those ships that were a nice gesture will be used to actually make a difference for someone. So CiG and SC development wins with youe r apparently unconditional support, and the people/charity that receives the money made off the auction wil also benefit.

I somehow think if I made that offer and took the time to make it legal I wouldnt get a single ship donated.

because its all just talk from that side of the fence. But if either of you two guys want to get the ball rolling feel free to donate your ships now.

I will gladly donate a starter package if someone that i trust is organizing a drawing here.

@ThelynEnnor ;  would you be interested to organize a drawing (and do some advertising for your org ?)

@MaxBacon ; would you like to organize something ... i will pay for the prize (= SC starter package)

No questions, just an x in a post and a drawing from all participants. We can run it over the weekend perhaps.

    @Erillion

I've made a few threads on the official forums requesting the ability to start without a ship, actually.

I enjoy the rags to riches experience very much - and would gladly donate both my ships away.

Most of my support has been in the form of my subscription.

I've never cared about my subscriber "perks" in the least. I'm sure rodarin would struggle to grasp that concept.

    I'm probably just a liar :)

Have you ever considered that maybe that's not what they're doing? Unless, by grubbing, you mean doing their best to fund this gargantuan effort.

I don't see why people are upset CR was promising the moon and is now literally selling it to you one piece at a time. Consider this a promise kept.
just to add a fool and his money will soon be parted, there are better ways to spend your hard earned money wisely such as paying your mortgage/loans/credit bills etc.., but paying couple of hundreds to thousands to help fund a game really??? unless you are shitting money bags go for it.

imo, there's more incentive for CR to not release the game, but to delay it and milk more $$$ i mean why stop when people its so easy to sell shiny ships/land/skins without releasing a game, and its not a scam, he is giving what players want i.e. shiny gleamy ships!!! and now lands woot!!!

So, you're saying you believe the incentive to be a greedy sleazebag is higher for you than actually staying true to your word and releasing a great game once it's done?

With so many people just donating for the sake of donating and not any advantage Roberts should just offer various pictures of himself as a reward...

Something tells me that they wouldn't have raised $160M+ if the only reward was a picture of Chris with his thumb up saying "Thanks"!

Sure there are SOME people that are just "donating" for love of the game, but many (and IMHO the vast majority) do not.

Maybe Elerion can suggest to Chris on the subscriber forums that there is no need to sell ships and land and that they should just do a test and just try and raise money with a digital thank you!

Well, you actually need a ship pledge to gain access to the game - so obviously the VAST majority of backers bought one for the game itself.

However, the "whales" donating thousands of dollars are almost certainly not doing it for the pixels.

I mean, ok, I'm sure there is a TINY percentage of people out there who seriously think that a bunch of pixels are actually worth 10000$ dollars - but I have to say I don't think it's a large segment of the population.

No, they do it because they can afford it like you can afford a candy bar - and because they want to support the game, and they probably think the token rewards are kinda cool and neat.

For you and I - it would be like paying 5$ for a costume in our favorite MMO. Do we REALLY think it's worth the money? Probably not, but who cares about 5$?
