I gave it a "C," grading it as an MMO. Even allowing for beta issues, it is standard, run-of-the-mill faire. No worse, no better than what is out there now.
As a Star Trek RPG MMO, I would give it a "D." Because I am kind
Just my opinion but I thought the combat and game mechanics were seriously boring, like not even salvagable, I cancelled my pre-order and not looking back.
I gave it an F because I have attempted to get into the enjoyment of the game on 3 separate sincere occasions but I get hit by boredom almost immediately and it only intensifies from there.
I give it a solid B. Without any preconceptions of what it "should be" or trek nerd wankery (half the shit they complain about with the IP tends to be overly examined or flat out false), the game itself is fun. It's clear there is much they still want to flesh out, but the ideas are solid, the current game is fun and should last quite a bit, and overall it's a decent game. How quickly they keep up with content, how they use their "cryptic store" and such are going to determine if it moves itself to a B+/A, or if it is going to merely stick to being a C+/-. The story content is what is keeping it fun/fresh for the most part, and if they just let that fall to the way side and make randomly generated crap from release on out, its going to get boring quickly. Bugs I'm not even concerned about, as I haven't had any that have even been an annoyance let alone a game breaker for me, and they seem to be working on them rather quickly at the moment. Once again, things depend on if they will continue their current pace or let things linger for months on end.
I was tempted to vote it A anyway just to counteract the expected trolls who are going to vote F regardless over some bitter agenda against Cryptic.
Currently I'm giving the game a D. I've run into countless bugs that has made the game very frustrating at times, Such as my Away Team not beaming down with me, missions not updating correctly, and horrendous pathing. I'm waiting to give my final judgement until I reach my second ship, and see how the game starts to change.
I voted it a "D". Not because I'm a trek fan boi or upset with Cryptic but because of the countless bugs I've run in to and how boring and linear the game-play is. This is Star Trek and all I've done is gone out and shot at things. There is nothing about diplomacy, there is no talking to any of the NPC races, instead you come in guns blazing and shooting the shit out of people.
Furthermore, there is NO exploration in this game. None. There was at no point where I felt like there was any exploration in the game at all; unless of course you were trying to find your mission way points through space, which was horribly directed and left you with your thumb up your a** wondering where the hell you were suppose to go. Example:
-"Take this sample of [insert something sci-fi here] that you got off of a ship you blew the hell out of the sky without even talking to the occupants, to Base 120391-293 somewhere in space"
-*You head into space and look at the galaxy map, where the base you are looking for isn't listed and you can't search for it because there is no search function even though this base is owned by the Federation you have no clue where it is and none of your resources can tell you so you scream out in Zone chat "Where is Base 120391-293" and if you're lucky, someone may answer.
-If no answer then this is the exploration you have to deal with, and its not pleasant.
As much as I like the general idea/concepts, they're poorly implemented. Ground combat, while fun, is horribly fragile. God help you if an enemy gets up in your chest because you're not going to last more then a few shots, and the AI that accompanies you is SO dumb that they get stuck on ledges, corners, bodies, pebbles, you name it. Whats worse, is you can't get through things without them.
Lastly, space combat is probably the most redeeming quality of this game. Unfortunately it also lacks any real luster. While working the shields and trying to turn the ship so that your stronger shields are facing the enemy is fun, its also... meh. Its the same thing constantly. You don't have "warp power offline", you don't get "plasma leaks" or things of that nature, its just very... anti-climatic. Furthermore, you'll be able to take down a fleet of ships and then you come across one large ship and you can't do shit. Whats worse is you leave the mission for help and its a gamble whether it will reset or not and if you can both get into the same instance to defeat the ship together.
In all reality, the game could be better and I realize its only in beta, but lets be honest here... its a month from launch, what can they really fix/make better in that time frame?
"And after blizzard takes over the world, they are gonna gather a bunch of lemmings, sit on their fat asses near a cliff, and watch the little fuzzy bastards suicide dive into the ground below. . . . . all just for their own entertainment."
I'd say D.... i try to like it but it's too repetitive and it's way too instanced for me...it feels like playing a single player game. When i started, i really enjoyed the ship combat, but after a while it gets boring. I was really disappointed and cancelled my pre-order.
I give this game a B, a few things that need a bit of work is ground combat system, tweaking out the lag/load screens and add some extra depth to bridge view.
I have seen a lot of negative hits at this game, maybe ppl are hating Cryptic, maybe they don't find space flying easy, maybe there just board to easy , maybe they quit during the tutorials which is just is silly. you don't enjoy Instance based MMO's, maybe they just give up too easy on all MMO's they play unless there EQ clones. I don't know what it is, it's just insane.
This is not a perfect game or a AAA title Star Trek game, but I would have to say it has been one of the best space games I have played in such awhile. Sins of Solar Empire and EVE have been great experiences, but I do see a great fresh experience when I play STO.
I due hope that most ppl that play this or most MMO's really try to play the game for at least a weeks time, because most of the reviews I see from this game are from ppl that only played it less then a hour.
Missions go from short and sweet, to zone changing battles. When you get higher ranks you get amazing ships to captain, the music is great and has a nice tone to it. You get the sounds and visual vista of Star Trek throughout your adventure and it feels like your really in that universe. Combating a ship has it's moments of awe and then your like oh s@#t I'm being attacked by 5 ships, it's crazy sometimes. I can't wait to see what more is waiting for me in this title and I can't wait to try out the Klingon side of the playing field.
Wildstar (2013) & Elder Scroll Online (2013)
Playing: Diablo 3, WOW, Far Cry 3 & X-Com.
Enjoyed: WOW 5 1/2 yrs, LOTRO 3yrs, GW 1/2yr, DFO 1yr, EVE Online 3yrs, and Huxley (Beta).
Failed to impress: GW2 3months, Tera Online 6 months (best combat system in any MMO I've played) STO 1/4yr, Aion 1/2yr, AoC 1yr, CO, Fallen Earth, DDO, EQ2 1/2yr, WAR 1/2yr, Lineage 2 and FF XI 1/2yr, FF XIV.
I give it a D. Definitly not due to bugs and insane lag through the tutorial/intro... I get it... it's in Beta.
Let me take another tack and explain what kept it from "F". I enjoyed character customization and the storyline that puts you in the Captain's chair despite being an Ensign. Probably doesn't hold up to Trekkie standard... but it was enough for me to get into it. I liked the space combat... not groundbreaking or anything... but a good update to Starfleet Battles. That's where it ended.
Art style of massive rooms and doors killed a lot of the atmosphere.
Glowy "action" items and doors drove me crazy (Just stick an exclamation over it or something... label it... anything but making it upstage the whole environment).
"Sector Space"? Come the f*** on! What a horrible solution to dealing with warp travel.
Ground combat? Boring.
Exploration? Where?
Not a big crafter myself... and frankly I don't know how it would jive in the ST universe... but there must be something. It is a nice departure from time to time.
And finally... I want to do everything from my Captain's chair and viewscreen! That took me woefully out of the Trek mood and into... say... Star Control from the 90's. Yeesh.
I gave it a D... I find it hard to believe that anyone who isnt a Star trek fan will find much to enjoy in this game. I didnt like Champions but atleast it was fun for awhile and had some good ideas. So far I dont have much positve to say about STO sadly. After reading this forum I had low expectations because of all the negativity but it was even worse that I thought.
The ground combat and missons are terrible, space combat was fun for awhile but got old really fast.
Everything about the game feels cheap and rushed. I would rather play Champions than this. Bugs and server issues is not the biggest problems in STO.
If WoW = The Beatles and WAR = Led Zeppelin Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
You should grade what you see, not what you believe might be there... It;s always great to see potential, but it may never realized...so grade the facts.
D. Not an F because I guess you can qualify it as a (somewhat) playable game.
With a release date hitting in 15 days (assuming they are working through the weekend) There is no chance this game is going to be a success at launch. Open Betas like these, this close to launch are for stress tests and marketing. If they wanted a successful game they would postpone the release date.
Was so hyped for the game, then heard about the mall shop and sub, instant rejection. Got my key from here, tried the beta, I have pre-ordered.
It has a lot of things about it that I hate, lack of mmo for one major one but I have enjoyed it none the less. I don't condone subbing a sp/co-op game so I doubt I''l be going past the free month.
Rated: B
The minute the shop is implemented though, I'll probably junk it, it's a shame.
----- The person who is certain, and who claims divine warrant for his certainty, belongs now to the infancy of our species.
I'm giving it a B- but that's assuming a polished, bug-free, lag-free version ( hopefully by release ) with more content. Anybody expecting a sandbox, immersive universe will be disapointed. If you don't have too high expectations and take the game for what it is, it can be fun for a while. I wouldn't play it for more than a few months, but until it lasts, I'd have fun. The game mechanics are pretty classic ( including the grinding ) and the instancing / loading screens are disapointing. The space combat is easily the best part, although a bit repetitive, but it doesn't bore me to death like Eve did. It has a good balance of twitch ( controling your ship directly ) and tactics.
Been playing all weekend and having a ball in the beta. I have seen much worse in beta potbs for one with the issue of avatar combat there. While I do agree that there is a lack of balande between the feds and kilingon, I do not thing that the unbalance will remain for launch. Good startrek them but any startrek beyond the original is crap.
Ultimately, I wont grade the game in this bait and troll thread but, i will be preordering
Why? Other than bugs and lag... how much do you really expect it to improve? I think everyone is addressing legitimate "content" concerns.
Edit: Corrected punctuation... yeah... I'm crazy like that.
Because not everything that will be available in game is available now. So I'm going to wait until I have actually played the full game, not part of it.That's like giving me a sample of food and then asking me to grade the entire menu.

in its current state in beta, i would give it a c. after some bug fixes and changes i might up it to a b.

Cryptic is trying a Customer Development approach to MMO creation.
