Just taking a shot in the dark, but the control system is one of the things that sets FF apart from the myriad of other games on the market. What it sounds like to me is that if the controls are not similar to WoW, you guys will not play it. I would venture to say that is much to the delight of current FF players.
While I agree with you for the most part I have to say it is probably in SE's intrest to give people options. No harm in that.
As much as I'd love to not see the mass majority of the WoW crowd in there and bugging us, its going to happen no matter what, thus I agree that having a nice hardware-mouse and WASD setup for them to be in SE best and ours interests. Thats one less and major complaint we'll have to read in chat.
Should those players decided to remain in Hydaelyn and not jump ship for Cataclysm in Nov, they will quickly learn that they must change and adapt to a reputation system or quickly be ignored by the community. This of course being entirely based on how FFXI works and since FFXIV is very similar I expect a return performance, especially since you play 1 character for the most part and starting over is not as easy as in other MMOs to erase ones stupid streak.
I would love to see a huge population with everyone playing together with each other in peacful company of one another and lose the Barrens style chat in favor of a ripe, helpful and friendly commuinty. Chuck Norris jokes in good flavor are ok though...they never tend to get old...hehe
I'm fully expecting complaints about how difficult it is to find quest NPCs because they don't have ! or ? over their heads. And woe to he or she who suggests reading the quest dialog more closely for that info.

Final Fantasy XI has some of the WORST mouse and keyboard controls I have ever seen in a game in my life, and yet it has become one of the most successful MMO's of all time, so the OP's argument is pretty much invalid. They are updating the game game with more accessible mouse/keyboard controls anyway, so all of you retards that just can't adapt to the way the game was meant to be played can join the people who are actually interested in this game. People who choose their games based on the input method, and not on the gameplay are idiots.
tho i would personally find it weird that FF wouldnt launch with it, as i recall the first FF online they launched had mouse/KB controls for it, or was that a diffrent FF??
FFXI launched with keyboard controls (mouse was there, but unnecessary).
FFXIV already has keyboard/mouse controls, just a lot of testers have been complaining that they are clunky. According to the Post-Beta 2 "Thank You" message to the testers there are going to be improved keyboard/mouse controls when Beta 3 goes live, so we'll just have to wait and see how improved.
plus as a pc gamer id be personally insulted if they launched it on pc and demanded you had to use their controller to play it.
FFXIV is no exception. You will definitely not be required to use a controller, it's just a lot of FFXI players eventually found it easier to use a controller in that game.
No one knows how FFXIV is going to be yet as they're still making major changes to the game at this point.
"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."
i think what the OP is saying, the game should be launched with mouse/keyboard controller sets, and work 100% with little to no lag between the key press and the sequence of actions that press carries out.
alot of console games that get ported to PC or visa versa do some times release with fubared controls in that you press a button and must wait a few seconds for the action to happen.
i THINK that is what he means by the game should not need a patch and should release with perfect mouse/KB control.
at the same time i think he miss read the statement, that the mouse/kb controls are being worked on to allow it to function correctly, which is where his "they shouldnt need a patch" statement enters the equation.
ofcourse as im not the OP this is all speculation lmao... maybe he wants a happy meal with toy i dont know. dont care.
Given how completely hysterical his responses have been, I'm not sure the OP even really knows what he's ranting about.... which is why I don't even know how to respond. I wouldn't know where to start.
And there is already mouse/keyboard functionality in the game. It's likely not going to work exactly as people are accustom to in WoW and other similar MMOs... But it is in there. The game is playable without a gamepad. It'll likely just take some getting used to.

Well, if it's that it's playable with mouse and keyboard that you're concerned with, then they've already addressed that.
The game, as of Beta 2, is playable with mouse and keyboard. It's not the setup most are familiar with and will take getting used to, but it's definitely playable. Hell, it's even playable with keyboard only. That's two PC-centric options.
And... in Beta 3 they'll have made enhancements to the mouse control.
So... really... SE's already met the requirement you've set forth.
That's good to hear, and I will wait to see if the control system is playable with mouse/keyboard unlike FFXI. If they've improved it to the point where I don't want to stab myself in the eyes out of frustration then I'll buy the game.

What's funny about that is that I started out as a gamepad player, having sworn there was no way I could ever play XI with the keyboard. Some time later, by chance, I had to use the keyboard for a bit.
Within a couple hours I'd gone from almost completely unfamiliar with keyboard controls, to swearing off gamepad completely and sticking with keyboard from then on out . I never even touched the mouse.
I think the difference is that when I first tried using the keyboard, I was brand-new to the game and so, not only was I completely unfamiliar with the control scheme, I was completely unfamiliar with the game. So it was newbie overload. By the time I came around to having to use the keyboard again, I knew the game system, I knew the controls and I had a reference of what key performed what function. So I'm sure that had a lot to do with it.
That said, once familiar with the keyboard setup, I could control my character just as well as any gamepad player and had the benefit of just having to press Ctrl-# or Alt-# to use macros, rather than having to hold down a shoulder button, move the cursor back and forth to the right macro, then use it. I also didn't have to put down the controller to type, then pick the controller back up again. Using a keyboard actually made playing the game faster and easier than the gamepad.

Good controls will be extremely important when the game comes out, a good chunk of players will be completely turned off if the controls are far to difficult to work with.
That said, unless it's worse than the control in XI, I don't think to many people will have problems with it.
Good controls will be extremely important when the game comes out, a good chunk of players will be completely turned off if the controls are far to difficult to work with.
The thing is, "far too difficult" is subjective. There are people who will try it once, say "oh screw this" and give up. There are others who will say "hmm this is different" and take the time to learn it.There are some who thought the controls in FFXI were the spawn of Satan. There were others who swore by them. For myself, I could play FFXI with gamepad or keyboard only, but in the end preferred keyboard by far. And there are various shades in-between.
So, it's really not as simple as saying "the controls can't be too difficult". It also comes back to the individuals trying it and how willing they are to try/learn something new.
It's a fair argument to say that XI's keyboard/mouse controls are awkward to get used to. But you also have to acknowledge that some people are simply 100% closed-minded against learning anything new or different than what they're used to.
That said, unless it's worse than the control in XI, I don't think to many people will have problems with it.
Case in point... I would be perfectly happy with keyboard/mouse being just like XI's. Hell I don't even need the mouse.

Hay, Toyota has a new line of cars coming out for 2011, What I've seen so far is that most can't test drive them, only a select few. They come with milk creates for seats that would work just fine. If you can find a nice message board, I'm sure you will be able to find some good aftermarket web sites for seats. Because the cars are real nice !
OK, I get your point that they are working on the keyboard+mouse issue. I get your point that it's still in bata !
But don't you think its getting a little late for this to EVEN BE AN ISSUE !............Here on mmorpg.com I see a list of about 200 mmo's. I've played most like many of you. Of the ones I've played you have two standard styles of play WASD, and point and click. Both styles work fine, however WASD is by far the perferd method. Now before 3 or 4 of you try and chew my head off (and yes, it's only 3 or 4 of you posting so far) I know what your gonna say, why does Square Enix need to be standard..Right ?.. Well they don't have to !.... BUT, and I say BUT Final Fantasy 11 really sucked as far as control, for millions of players. Thank God that game sold for only $10 for the past five years, because it ended up in the garbage can after only a few days of play for most.
This is different. FF XIV will be displayed to the public across the world at 50 or 60 dollars. With an est.rel of 09/22/10 they better get it right and quick, even to the point of the bata testers will have to forget everything they feel comfortable of what they learned and toss it out the window, as for how to control movement. Do you really think the devs are really gonna make such a radical change in bata, with launch a little more than a month away....I hope so, WHY :
Because I'm not closed minded and just thinking of me and 1500 others. I'm trying to look out for the entire million, that will be in the return lines..... So to make a long story short....Please don't just think about your self !

beta hasnt even gone on that long and there making pretty good progress so far.
you really need to get your facts striaght phase 3 of beta is for changes based on feedback. hence the big patch coming
They have already mentioned that the controls will be much different for FFXIV, more to the style we in the "west" are accustomed to.. They mentioned that macros will not be used like in the previous FF.
we can only wait and see.. I played FF11 on PS2 and i had to buy a keyboard for it because how else could you type? but the controls were not bad at all other than making macros

1.) It's beta. B-E-T-A. Anything can be an issue if it needs to be. That's the beauty of beta.
2.) WASD is the preferred method according to who? Americans? Europeans? Japanese? These are the groups that will be in FFXIV. And, let me tell you, many Japanese dislike the keyboard with a passion so hot it makes the tenticle monsters in hentai burst into flames.
3.) I don't see how your opinion on gameplay (the "garbage can" part) really has anything to do with the discussion at hand.
4.) This is not different. FFXI was designed, in your words, "for the public across the world at 50 or 60 dollars," as well. FFXI and FFXIV are being designed for the same crowd... for the same amount of money...
5.) And yes, they are making such radical changes. While they are adding in more classes next patch, speeding up battles a bit, and redoing controlls, I do believe the next patch is quite large. This. Is. What. Beta. Is. For.
6.) 1500 others? I really hope you construct your school papers in a more logical fashion while pulling random numbers from the air.

It is both possible and relativly easy for them to get keyboard and mouse available and up to par before launch. In this post you said they should get rid of the other control schemes that they already have.... So now you're saying they should remove options that others might enjoy and replace it with what you want. "forget everything they feel comfortable of what they learned and toss it out the window"
2.) WASD is the preferred method according to who? Americans? Europeans? Japanese? These are the groups that will be in FFXIV. And, let me tell you, many Japanese dislike the keyboard with a passion so hot it makes the tenticle monsters in hentai burst into flames.
Uh, pc gamers. That's who. Considering the controller is fine, the keyboard + mouse standard pc controls should be next, which it sounds like they are. Regardless if there are 1500 or 1.5million people in love with the idea of using a controller for ffxiv, there are tens of millions of pc gamers that almost never use one. His point is illustrated decently even if the number is wrong. That said, it looks like the crowd of "go play wow" or "omgz adapt to a controller newb" is going to be fine with their controller and can kindly be quiet as it sounds like SE is making the changes and fixes a lot of people are asking for with the controls. The company obviously should want to cater to everyone.
controlls are eithre very difficult or the person who made this FFXIV combat video is just an idiot, looks like a challenge to move, get a good camera angle and even swing a sword...
Since this game will actually work well with a controller, I'll be breaking out my gamepad. I much prefer to recline with a gamepad than hover over my keyboard/mouse. I've got a few friends that are coming with me, so I'll be able to voice chat more than type...
Yes, I am that lazy that I want the ease of a gamepad over the difficulty of a keyboard/mouse...

It's too bad that most of the people who responded to your post didn't actually read it very closely, because you make a very good point, specifically
"By playable I mean the game should be designed with these controls in mind if it's a platform it's being released on."
This distinction is lost on people who for whatever reason take pride in the poorly designed UI of FFXI.
Watch, soon as they make the controls standard we're gonna see some "WoW clone" threads .
But of course...there isn't much left for them to whine about, one of the few remaining topics is "WoW clone" now. Well there is of course a huge, "what, there aren't ! & ? to guide my every action" discussion yet to surface.
I've seen a few on other forums mention they refuse to play if there isn't ! & ? because its too difficult for them to figure it out on their own.

Who exactly is "them"? People who don't gush over SE or just anyone who disagrees with you these days?
parrotpholk-Because we all know the miracle patch fairy shows up the night before release and sprinkles magic dust on the server to make it allllll better.
How it was ever a fleeting thought to make a pc compatible mmo game without mouse and keyboard support is insane.
If it isn't a solidly supporting mouse and keyboard they'll alienate a massive playerbase.
Yes SonikFlash,
I'm also thinking about the money waisted from people on a budget.
If they don't fix the controls, I would like to think of a way to sneak into my local GameStop and put "floresent orange stickers" on every copy telling everyone to research and buy controllers, so massive amounts of people don't get screwed !
All the threats er the same Controls bad here mouse bad there etc.. etc.. but what is the real issue here??
Is it really that the mouse/Keyboard controls aren't good or is it the fact that they r not as good as they Gamepad controls?
Ok so the Keyboard/Mouse controls aren't perfect maybe they r even bad but hey u can use it if u want no one is forcing u to use a Gamepad
Dont get me wrong now i do think that SE should maker the Controls good enough to be enjoyable but if in the end playing with Gamepad would be smoother well than thats how it is. You all r so pissed course of the bad controls and u just demand that it will be fixed but why do u really want it?? isnt it only course u play most of your mmos with mouse and keyboard so u assume for some reason that every game just has to go the same way.
I always felt that the FF 11 controls with a Gamepad gave the whole game feeling something different infact from all the mmos i played i enjoyed the controls from 11 the most.
Now we all have other preferences and thats cool but why r u Keyboard fans all so hateful?? i never would have thought of being pissed that MMO XY didn't allow me to use a Gamepad hell they forced me to play with Keyboard and Mouse there was no way around that but did i get pissed??? or for that matter did u ever hear ppls complain about no Gamepad option in MMOs??
Well i certainly did not yet there r so many here who complain about a bad keyboard/mouse controll option without stopping jusr for a second to rethink there arguments and see that its just Hilarious.
Most of us always want an MMO to bring us something new well guys here it is (at least for most of u) now u play an MMo with a Gamepad sweet something new finally...but naah that's not what u wanted so we just bitch bitch bitch.
So again (just to clarify it) i agree Keyboard mouse controls should be present and allow u to play the game but they dont need to work as good or even better than the Gamepad controls.
So why cant we all just be happy the ones who wanna play with Keyboard and Mouse can do it and the ones who wanna play with Gamepad can do it too and that's more options than most MMos offer u and more options should be considered a good thing after all in the end we all r different and like different things so if i have more choices its a bigger chance i might like what they offer....but guess for most more choices only offer more options to bitch about which is sad....
ps. FF isnt the first game on pc which plays better with a Gamepad just think about all the sport games (fifa/nfl/nba) u could use both but Gamepad just worked better no complains from anyone there tho....
yes its ok when you get use to it, but wven then its not really prime for doing anything, its got alot of wasted time fumbleing when it could be more streamlined.
and just because its alright now doesnt mean that it couldnt be fixed so people dont need to take their time just to get use to controls
I find it tedious as hell to play on a gamepad and frankly it's just not my style. Plus you shouldn't be marketing it as a PC game if the accepted medium for input is a keyboard and mouse.
Now I'm not jumping on SE because i don't know if they did or didn't include keyboard and mouse support, the first few lines are written under the assumed proposal that they are not.

Because I'm not closed minded and just thinking of me and 1500 others. I'm trying to look out for the entire million, that will be in the return lines..... So to make a long story short....Please don't just think about your self !
,
beta hasnt even gone on that long and there making pretty good progress so far.
you really need to get your facts striaght phase 3 of beta is for changes based on feedback. hence the big patch coming
/chews
My theme song.

People like to just go home and play !
So why cant we all just be happy the ones who wanna play with Keyboard and Mouse can do it and the ones who wanna play with Gamepad can do it too and that's more options than most MMos offer u and more options should be considered a good thing after all in the end we all r different and like different things so if i have more choices its a bigger chance i might like what they offer....but guess for most more choices only offer more options to bitch about which is sad....
ps. FF isnt the first game on pc which plays better with a Gamepad just think about all the sport games (fifa/nfl/nba) u could use both but Gamepad just worked better no complains from anyone there tho....
i have to agree with everyone.
yes its ok when you get use to it, but wven then its not really prime for doing anything, its got alot of wasted time fumbleing when it could be more streamlined.
and just because its alright now doesnt mean that it couldnt be fixed so people dont need to take their time just to get use to controls
In short, don't reinvent the wheel.
