All 4 betas so far. Level 20+ did not get to 27 this time although it was open to 27 .
My point on pointing out 57 posts that were your own as opposed to 200 was just an indication that the number of posts on this thread is not necessarily an indication that it is a hotly discussed opinion considering more than 25% of the post belong to the thread starter. Again I was not trying to criticize you just pointing out that even though you have said many people preferred to discuss you rather than your opinion you still responded quite prodigiously.
Expect to get attacked. They want to defend the game. The fact that you took time to post can be considered in itself a form of attack
Don't be ridiculous. In fact, this attitude, the one where everyone's opinion that dosent agree with yours in an 'attack', is exactly the problem with these boards. Percieving the need to 'defend' against every one that dosent like your favourite game is a siege mentality and just breeds conflict, something that you would hope most adults have grown past. I stated opinions and put them up for discussion, thats all. I wasnt rude and didnt troll. Responding in a hostile way can't be justified.
Disagree, sure, tell me why, sure, share your own opinion, sure, but aggressively attack me for having different ones? No.
Tbh, this one simple statement above made me stop reading and dismiss everything else you said out of hand, which is a shame because you may have made some decent points.
You are condoning personal attacks in a thread thats talking about a game, which to me is the opposite of what it was started for.
If people feel the need to defend the game by making personal attacks that says more about them then I, and I don't accept this attempt to shft responsibility for that on to the poster. It's just a juvenile way of thinking.
Anyhow, enough derailment of you talking about me (another juvenile way of posting), lets get back to the game and chatting about our opinions of it.
Its not juvenile its the way of this forum.
One dosent exclude the other. Stop rationalising it.. just because 'others do it' dosent mean you have to, or excuse you when you do.
If you post looking for a fight you will get one.
Stating an opinion on a game is looking for a fight? No.
Your telling me in 2000+ post here you really dont get it?
I get how to act on a forum yes, better then most it would seem.
I don't start every thread to have a fight or engage in conflict. I don't percieve that everyone who dosent like my game is 'attacking me'.
Look, you carry on, it's obvious that I am not going change your siege mentallity 'everyone who likes something else is an enemy' worldview in a thread on a gaming forum, and tbh I have no need to. You carry on fighting with everyone, seeing everyone as an enemy... thats fine and means little to me.
Please now, stop derailing this thread with your sermons to me on how 'forums work', and lets talk about what we are here for.
Games.
I am not going to go into why you simply propel this but basically if you respond to me I respond to you that is all you could have simply ignored dismissed my post and not addressed it but you keep responding trying to say something about me I havent done. I will quote you apply it to yourself and see how many people you have replied to in similar faction you hypocrite "Look, you carry on, it's obvious that I am not going change your siege mentallity 'everyone who likes something else is an enemy' worldview in a thread on a gaming forum, and tbh I have no need to. I feel the exact same way about you.

The fact that you know how these forums are and yet you post the way you do tells me all i need to know. Is it ridculous how arguementative these forums are? IMHO yes sort of (opinion not fact), but Is it a fact that these forums are that way? YES. He should have very well known to post and leave the thread alone but each and every response is just another reason to attack him. He asked for it just like so many others and plays the victim card like it wasn't his fault.
No, the forums are not used the way they should and the OP is using it as intended. He is looking to voice his opinion and these forums are to facilitate on that. He enters a meta-discussion BECAUSE the other posters are simply wrong on this level. They have the wrong intentions, and he points that out. Just because most people have the wrong idea of what a discussion is and what the rules of discussing are is not the OP's fault in any way. You say leave it for what it is, I say fight it or ignore it and hope to find someone sane....
What i meant by the OP "wasn't wrong" is just factual. He presented some of his opinions (not facts) and they were valid. That doesnt mean he didnt ask for it. From the minute you mention I will wait for "x" game while you guys play this one your asking for it. From the minute it sounds like you dont like themepark games knowing full thats the game genre your asking for it. From the time you hit "POST MESSAGE" and you know something you have said might upset somebody your asking for it. It is the very nature of these forums. If you do not like it just leave. No matter how you feel about it the fact remains he posted thus he asked for it. It doesnt matter if its positive or negative voicing your opinions here means you best be ready to defend them and anything else you said nothing more nothing less. He simply could have refused to respond but he did (just like you and me) adding more fuel to the fire. You are actively playing this forum game and calling it childish to quote you "No, the OP does not by definition have to follow the childish and ridiculous behaviour that makes up the current standard of these forums."
Yet that is exactly what he is doing with each reply (same as you and me). If you know what the response will be don't be pissed just accept it.
No that is not true at all, he is entering a meta-discussion because the invalid points and intentions of other poster force him to. It is ridiculous that when i try to have a civil discussion that i should keep in mind that other people are incapable of doing so. And even more ridiculous that because of this I should leave and not the people who do not know what a discussion is, even though we are on a discussionboard.
Like I have said before while I feel the game is not innovative it seems to me the game is polised and executes elements we have seen before in such a way that they are enjoyable. This is my basic arguement his could have been this simple also.
Yes that simple, but also in a negative way. he might not find it enjoyable. When he would have said so, he would have gotten the same shit he is getting now because he is negative about something other people like and those people can not handle this. You already stated that the OP had VALID points. So thats not the problem. It seems the problem here is the fact that the OP is being negative. People for some reason can not handle negativity. i can be both positive and negative about 1 object or subject, I can still like junkfood but acknowledge it is junk. But on these forums people have to deal in absolutes constantly. Like when I like the color Red, i must absolutely hate green. which is ridiculous....
Read the above and apply the same to yourself.
BTW (to both of you) dont want me to post in your thread again dont respond. Show how adult you are ahd how to dont want to enter this meta discussion. If you do your both just being hypocrites.

And you still find the 'exhilarating'? I honestly got so bored of them... by B2 I was avoiding them and only really begrudgingly fighting them when they were a barrier to progression. What did you find so great about them? To bear such exhilaration after doing them 20 or so times? What else do you disagree with from my OP?
Well i would disagree with the assertion that the rifts are not fun. In fact if I was getting bored of running the quests I could get a group and rift for awhile. Having different things to do is always good. BTW I like your siggy.

I have to run off and cook soon so this will be brief as I live in Rome and it will be dinner time and my husband will chop off me head if dinner is not on the table.
I approached the game differently from you .I initially was very bored with it but after I told myself to stop trying to equate my experiences from what has gone before and in spite of that I found many many similarities but I persevered. I then took part in the rifts and I tried rolling a few different builds and this is why I hardly advanced and the two starter areas were truly killing me.
I found the diversity of souls very challenging and I enjoyed going really far out and combining them to test them out. The rifts I played as a healer mainly on a mage and cleric and I found myself cornered and stuck and afraid to move and I got killed quite a bit on the mage. I found that challenging and fun.

What did you find fun exactly afer doing them 20+ times?
I found them fun at first because they looked cool and were a novelty.
What was it that appeals to you so much about their actual pew pew zerg play mechanic once the novelty was gone?

lol ok, fair enough
I approached the game differently from you .I initially was very bored with it but after I told myself to stop trying to equate my experiences from what has gone before
But I didnt do this, your just assuming I did (again). I have repeatedly said I judged Rift entirely on it's own merits on whether it was a good game for myself or not. Please try to listen to this, because you keep saying the same thing, and I keep ansering in the same way, and then you ignore what I have said and just repeat your assumption
I found the diversity of souls very challenging and I enjoyed going really far out and combining them to test them out.
I have said already thay the soul system is the best thing in the game (albeit with some reservations about what it will maybe turn into at end game...)
I have also said already that a game has to be more then a good soul system and some maps to hook me. this game really came down to just that.
The rifts I played as a healer mainly on a mage and cleric and I found myself cornered and stuck and afraid to move and I got killed quite a bit on the mage. I found that challenging and fun.
Rift isnt a bad game per say, it is just IMO a average mundane game that has no ambition or 'vsion'. No reach. Like I say, it is very... competent, but for me it is also very boring.
The quests I found boring, the PUG WFs were boring, the rifts quickly got boring, the itemistaion was boring... in my eyes it's all just so pedestrian and... boring.
I just don't think games should aim for so little and be sold on the main point of 'it's polished and it works'

copy and pasted from another thread, but since the same discussions happen over and over again...here it is.
Rifts themselves get more complicated as you level. Fire rifts spawn statues around the parameter that shoot out flame lasers that will do significant damage to players. Another rift has walls and book shelves and furniture that comes up from the ground. There's an interesting mechanic of the boss using spell books from the book shelves, that players have to click on the book he's using to debuff him. Another one with a boss surrounded by a red box thing that doesn't unlock until the rest of the mobs are killed. I mean this could be as complicated as it gets, since we haven't seen the higher levels. I have a feeling this is not the case.
I don't see how anyone who has played a variety of mmo's could play in the Rift beta and feel like the game has any lasting appeal. I have been playing "crappy" Vanguard a game that started in 07 and it has more advanced and fun features than "modern" Rifts.
Vanguard has spells like invisibility, levitation, bards have "super speed" song. Necros can take parts from their kills and modify there pets. Rogues can create poisons, not some stupid buff that adds poison damage like in Rifts. Druids make berries that one can use to heal themselves or add mana. Psionicists can feed mana to mana casters. Healers can pass out rez stones to all players. Feign death, even WoW has that. Dual targeting, Flying mounts, housing, meaningful crafting(building boats, parts for housing, ets.). Not to mention a large open world to explore. I can't imagine a Vanguard player leaving Vg for Rifts.
I could see a few WoW folks who are burned out maybe playing for a bit, but even they would end up going back to WoW. As it does what Rifts does only better. The dynamic world thing is overrated. It intrigued me for about 3 hours.
These are the things that make a game feel like a world and not a game, Rifts is just another game, and plays very much like a prettier yet clunkier WoW(played for 2ish years).
It's a decent enough game for my tastes and will tide me over nicely till SWTOR comes out. I need my MMO fix and either nothing else out there interests me or I'm burned out on them.
I agree with the above poster to a certain extent, VG and other games have many more options in content, skills, complexity and so forth, but VG for one is a boring, overly hard, group centric game that proves that games need a lot more than complexity to make them fun.

Well it's another diversion built into the game. Also, the rifts get more fun as they spawn wherever players are, and they get more powerful as the players get more powerful. There was a bit of variety in them as I played through. It is also nice because instead of having to get a group and then go to an instance (which you can do as well) you can just run to the rifts and free-for-all for a bit. I also like the fact that they are indeed rifts and they start spawning invasions if people ignore them.
So in essence it is more about giving the game another thing you can do so you can just get on and play. Every time I logged in there was something to do or something to goof around with and MMOs tend to be very treadmill like. This broke things up and made the game feel less like a treadmill. I also got a sense of living in a world constantly being attacked by the planes from them, and that was pretty cool too.

What use is a diversion if it's fundamentally... boring to a lot of people though? Dosent it then just become a nuisance?

Despite it's rocky state and technical state at launch VG was a ambitious game that wasnt afraid to reach out to try and create a world rather then a few maps
I could see a few WoW folks who are burned out maybe playing for a bit, but even they would end up going back to WoW. As it does what Rifts does only better. The dynamic world thing is overrated. It intrigued me for about 3 hours.
Rift will do very well off this market, and off disenfranchised players from games like Aion.
These are the things that make a game feel like a world and not a game, Rifts is just another game.
yep, and as such imo has no longevity.
VG would have died a long long time ago imo if it only offered what Rift is offering. The fact that is offers so much is why it still has players, despute it's drama filled birth. I think Trion need to consider that.

Well if you don't care about the answers, then why ask the question then? The universe won't really notice if you don't ask the questions either. No matter how many times they're asked in however many iterations.
My response to you wasn't to convince you to play the game. It was an answer to your question. I realize you thought the question was a rhetorical one. My apologizes if I disappointed you
Rift is not doing anything terribly new but it's the only game that looks decent enough to pay for this year. SWTOR looks horrible and it's selling points are gimimcky to me. Rift is gimmicky too but at least from beta I KNOW that it's solid. Really what else is there? Am I supposed to go play EQ?
Currently playing - FF14ARR Previous games - SWG, World of Warcraft, ShadowBane, Warhammer, Age of Conan, Darkfall, Planetside Asheron's Call, Everquest, Everquest 2, Too many.

really? you want me to counter the fact that you were completely dismissive to the fact that the question you asked has been asked dozens of times in this forums?
no, I want you to counter the fact that the rifts, even later on, are pew pew click zerg. I honestly thought that was clear.
let the 'dismissive' thing go... it really isnt whats happeneing here, despite whats become fixated.

I apologise for not reading every thread to be posted about Rift before asking a question on page.. whatever it is of this one.
Like i say though, if you don't like repetition, don't answer it. You arnt forced to.
People make broad statements that the rifts are the same and boring.
Maybe thats what they really actually think. Maybe all those people have a valid opinion.
Anyhow, it wasnt even me that turned this into a rifts thread... I presented a number of clear opinions on diffferent aspects. It's mostly been the Rift fans that have fixated on it.

The counter of the fact that rift are pew, pew, click, pew later on (later on being level 20+) is the statues where you have to pay attention to where you are and where you're going. Get caught in those lasers and you'll be fried. But that won't be enough for you too I'm sure. We'll just have to wait and see how much more complicated they'll get. Well if you don't care about the answers, then why ask the question then?
/sigh.. try countering what i actually said? Thats called a discussion.
My response to you wasn't to convince you to play the game. It was an answer to your question. I realize you thought the question was a rhetorical one. My apologizes if I disappointed you
No you didnt, don't worry, I was hoping for an answer. I like talking about games.
really? you want me to counter the fact that you were completely dismissive to the fact that the question you asked has been asked dozens of times in this forums?
no, I want you to counter the fact that the rifts, even later on, are pew pew click zerg. I honestly thought that was clear.
let the 'dismissive' thing go... it really isnt whats happeneing here, despite whats become fixated.
I don't read other threads on this forum really tbh, aside some random posts in a couple of others... Why would I? I am basing my opinions on just my own experience.
The fact stands that rifts are more complicated than what you stated. Whether you find that fact important or not is up to you. I found it really fun.
I've not read through the ten pages of responses so forgive me if this point has already been raised, but it is BETA. A fraction of the content has been seen and you are making judgements about how long the game can hold your attention?!
If you pay attention to the podcasts you'll know they designed the game with a solid working endgame, until people have seen *that* no-one can make a truely informed decision, unless you went into it thinking the game was going to be a sandbox when clearly it isn't.

You carry on fighting with everyone, seeing everyone as an enemy... thats fine and means little to me."
I feel the exact same way about you.

I will say more later. Sorry got to go.
What did you find fun exactly afer doing them 20+ times?
I found them fun at first because they looked cool and were a novelty.
What was it that appeals to you so much about their actual pew pew zerg play mechanic once the novelty was gone?
and thx
mmo's where things are only done a few times...
copy and pasted from another thread, but since the same discussions happen over and over again...here it is.
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
And you still find the 'exhilarating'? I honestly got so bored of them... by B2 I was avoiding them and only really begrudgingly fighting them when they were a barrier to progression.

Well if you don't care about the answers, then why ask the question then? The universe won't really notice if you don't ask the questions either. No matter how many times they're asked in however many iterations.

Rift is not doing anything terribly new but it's the only game that looks decent enough to pay for this year. SWTOR looks horrible and it's selling points are gimimcky to me. Rift is gimmicky too but at least from beta I KNOW that it's solid. Really what else is there? Am I supposed to go play EQ?

it just wasnt the revelation for me, or others by your own admission, as it was obviously for you... even that vid makes it look just boring tbh.
But hey, good for you, have fun playing your game.
It's not my game. It's a game I enjoy to play. There's a difference.
Please elaborate? Did my opinion somehow strike a discussion deemed so inhumane you can't speak of it?

hey, how ever you want to say it, I don't mind. I'm just here to talk about the game
